Novel Multifunctional Mesoporous Microsphere with High Surface Area for Removal of Zinc Ion from Aqueous Solution: Preparation and Characterization

Targeting the Antibody Fab Region Using Light-Induced Indole-3-Butyric Acid Functionalized Magnetic Microspheres

A novel light-controlled adsorption system for direct targeting of antibody Fab fragments was developed by utilizing indole-3-butyric acid functionalized magnetic microspheres. Indole-3-butyric acid, serving as a specific small molecule ligand, was successfully conjugated to amine-functionalized magnetic microspheres via a 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide activation strategy. Under illumination at a particular wavelength, the indole-3-butyric acid ligand generated reactive radicals that interacted with the nucleotide-binding sites of antibody Fab fragments, enabling effective affinity adsorption. Static adsorption experiments demonstrated that the system's adsorption behavior obeys the Langmuir model (KF = 0.122, R2 = 0.996), indicating a homogeneous adsorption process. Kinetic studies further revealed that the adsorption process follows a second-order kinetic model (k2 = 0.0257, R2 = 0.989). When compared with conventional antibody adsorption systems, this new system exhibited specific targeting of Fab fragments, enhanced selectivity, and adjustable properties. In particular, at pH 7.0, effective elution was achieved by increasing the salt concentration, with the eluted product retaining antigen-binding activity. The purification recovery rate exceeded 98%, and the system maintained effective adsorption and elution of Fab fragments across various pH conditions. Besides, even after 10 reuse cycles, the system retained more than 96% of its efficiency, thus presenting excellent regenerability and reusability. In summary, the developed light-controlled antibody Fab region adsorption system offers a highly efficient, stable, and cost-effective approach. It is also expected to become one of the most effective methods for antibody Fab purification in the future.

Advances in Amine-Surface Functionalization of Inorganic Adsorbents for Water Treatment and Antimicrobial Activities: A Review

In the last decade, adsorption has exhibited promising and effective outcomes as a treatment technique for wastewater contaminated with many types of pollutants such as heavy metals, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and bacteria. To achieve such effectiveness, a number of potential adsorbents have been synthesized and applied for water remediation and antimicrobial activities. Among these inorganic adsorbents (INAD), activated carbon, silica, metal oxide, metal nanoparticles, metal-organic fibers, and graphene oxide have been evaluated. In recent years, significant efforts have been made in the development of highly efficient adsorbent materials for gas and liquid phases. For gas capture and water decontamination, the most popular and known functionalization strategy is the chemical grafting of amine, due to its low cost, ecofriendliness, and effectiveness. In this context, various amines such as 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), diethanolamine (DEA), dendrimer-based polyamidoamine (PAMAM), branched polyethyleneimine (PEI), and others are employed for the surface modification of INADs to constitute a large panel of resource and low-cost materials usable as an alternative to conventional treatments aimed at removing organic and inorganic pollutants and pathogenic bacteria. Amine-grafted INAD has long been considered as a promising approach for the adsorption of both inorganic and organic pollutants. The goal of this review is to provide an overview of surface modifications through amine grafting and their adsorption behavior under diverse conditions. Amine grafting strategies are investigated in terms of the effects of the solvent, temperature, and the concentration precursor. The literature survey presented in this work provides evidence of the significant potential of amine-grafted INAD to remove not only various contaminants separately from polluted water, but also to remove pollutant mixtures and bacteria.
