Thermodynamic and Kinetic Studies of Removal Process of Hexavalent Chromium Ions from Water by Using Bio-conducting Starch–Montmorillonite/Polyaniline Nanocomposite

Tuning a green carboxymethyl cellulose-based pre-tanning agent via peroxide oxidation for high chrome exhaustion in leather industry

The low chrome uptake by collagen in the conventional tanning process leads to the pollution of the wastewater. Due to environmental concerns, leather scientists are already searching for innovative ways to produce pre-tanning agents as a high exhaustion chrome tanning auxiliary. Herein, a novel kind of pre-tanning agent is engineered by converting carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (OCMC) via the hydrogen peroxide process. FT-IR and carboxyl content analysis demonstrated the increase in carboxyl content after oxidation. After that, the obtained OCMC was utilized as a pre-tanning agent, resulting in a high exhaustion of chrome (92.76 %) which is 27.76 % more than conventional chrome tanning (65 %), and the amount of chrome in wastewater reduced to 7.24 %. The hydrothermal stability of wet-blue increased by increasing the uptake of chrome (Ts = 118 °C). The obtained crust leather represented excellent mechanical properties (Tensile strength: 305.68 kg/cm2; tear strength: 50 kg/cm) and desirable organoleptic properties. The environmental analysis signifies a significant step towards a cleaner and sustainable tanning process (COD = 1600, BOD5 = 560 mg/L) compared to the conventional chrome tanning process. Consequently, the obtained results offer a green pre-tanning agent to meet the requirements of the sustainable development of the leather industry.

Preparation and modification of nanocellulose and its application to heavy metal adsorption: A review

Heavy metals are a notable pollutant in aquatic ecosystems that results in many deadly diseases of the human body after enrichment through the food chain. As an environmentally friendly renewable resource, nanocellulose can be competitive with other materials at removing heavy metal ions due to its large specific surface area, high mechanical strength, biocompatibility and low cost. In this review, the research status of modified nanocellulose for heavy metal adsorbents is primarily reviewed. Two primary forms of nanocellulose are cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The preparation process of nanocellulose was derived from natural plants, and the preparation process included noncellulosic constituent removal and extraction of nanocellulose. Focusing on heavy metal adsorption, the modification of nanocellulose was explored in depth, including direct modification methods, surface grafting modification methods based on free radical polymerization and physical activation. The adsorption principles of nanocellulose-based adsorbents when removing heavy metals are analyzed in detail. This review may further facilitate the application of the modified nanocellulose in the field of heavy metal removal.

Polypyrrole-based adsorbents for Cr(VI) ions remediation from aqueous solution: a review

Anthropogenic activities are principally responsible for the manifestation of toxic and carcinogenic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) triggering water pollution that threatens the environment and human health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) restricts Cr(VI) ion concentration to 0.1 and 0.05 mg/L in inland surface water and drinking water, respectively. The available technologies for Cr(VI) ion removal from water were highlighted with an emphasis on the adsorption technology. Furthermore, the characteristics of several polypyrrole-based adsorbents were scrutinized including amino-containing compounds, biosorbents, graphene/graphene oxide, clay materials and many other additives with reported effective Cr(VI) ion uptake. This efficiency in Cr(VI) ions adsorption is attributed to enhanced redox properties, increased number of functional groups as well as the synergistic behaviour of the materials making up the composites. The Langmuir isotherm best described the adsorption processes with maximum adsorption capacities ranging from 3.40-961.50 mg/g. The regeneration of Cr(VI) ion-laden adsorbents was studied. Ion exchange, electrostatic attractions, complexation, chelation reactions with protonated sites and reduction were the mechanisms of adsorption. Nevertheless, there are limited details on comprehensive adsorbent regeneration studies to prolong robustness in adsorption-desorption cycles and utilization of the Cr(VI) ion-laden adsorbent in other areas of research to limit the threat of secondary pollution.

Polyaniline/Nanomaterial Composites for the Removal of Heavy Metals by Adsorption: A Review

Heavy metals represent one of the most important kinds of pollutants, causing serious threats to the ecological balance. Thus, their removal from aqueous solution is a major environmental concern worldwide. The process of adsorption—being very simple, economical, and effective—is widely applied for the decontamination of wastewaters from heavy metals. In this process, the adsorbent is the key factor affecting the performance; for this reason, significant efforts have been made to develop highly efficient and selective adsorbents with outstanding properties. This paper presents a detailed overview of the research on different methods of synthesis of nanocomposite materials based on the polymer polyaniline combined with nanomaterials, along with the influence of the synthesis method on their size, morphology, and properties. In addition, the study evaluates the adsorption efficiency of various developed nanocomposites for the adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution. From an economical and environmental point of view, the regeneration studies of the nanocomposites are also reported.

Cationic starch intercalated montmorillonite nanocomposites as natural based adsorbent for dye removal

Cationic starch intercalated montmorillonite (Mt-CST) adsorbent was developed for the removal of basic dyes, namely, Basic Blue (BB66) and Basic Yellow (BY1) from aqueous solution. Cationic starches (CST) containing ammonium groups with the degree of substitution of 0.16 (CST1) and 0.69 (CST2) were successfully prepared from the reaction of low molar mass starch with (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl) ammonium chloride. A series of Mt-CST nanocomposites were prepared by controlling the mass ratios of Mt:CST. Adsorption of BB66 and BY1 from aqueous solution onto Mt-CST was studied. The adsorption capacity increased with decreasing of cationic groups in the CST or increasing the mass ratios of Mt:CST. The results showed that the Mt-CST11 nanocomposite with the mass ratio of Mt:CST1 of 69: 31 exhibited relatively high adsorption capacities for basic dyes. The results of adsorption behaviors of BY1 on Mt-CST11 and Mt-CST21 indicated that the adsorption processes followed well the Langmuir isotherm.
