Synthesis of Micro-dumbbell Shaped rGO/ZnO Composite Rods and Its Application Towards as Electrochemical Sensor for the Simultaneous Determination of Ammonia and Formaldehyde Using Hexamine and Its Structural Analysis

Highly Sensitive Detection of Formaldehyde by Laser-Induced Graphene-Coated Silver Nanoparticles Electrochemical Sensing Electrodes

Formaldehyde (HCHO) poses a grave threat to human health because of its toxicity, but its accurate, sensitive, and rapid detection in aqueous solutions remains a major challenge. This study proposes a novel electrochemical sensor composed of a graphene-based electrode that is prepared via laser induction technology. The precursor material, polyimide, is modified via the metal ion exchange method, and the detective electrode is coated with graphene and silver nanoparticles. And the special structure of graphene-coated Ag was demonstrated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that graphene provides more sites for Ag NRs to be exposed and increases the surface area of contact between the solution and the detection object. In addition, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) analysis exhibits high linearity over the HCHO concentration range from 0.05 to 5 μg/mL, with a detection limit of 0.011 μg/mL (S/N = 3). The Ag NPs in the electrochemical reaction will adsorb the intermediate •CO and •OH, catalyze their combination, and finally convert to CO2 and H2O, respectively. A microdetection device, specially designed for use with commercial micro-workstations, is employed to fully demonstrate the practical application of the electrode, which paves a way for developing formaldehyde electrochemical sensors.

Carbon Materials in Electroanalysis of Preservatives: A Review

Electrochemical sensors in electroanalysis are a particularly useful and relatively simple way to identify electroactive substances. Among the materials used to design sensors, there is a growing interest in different types of carbon. This is mainly due to its non-toxic properties, low cost, good electrical conductivity, wide potential range, and the possibility of using it in both aqueous and nonaqueous media. The electrodes made of carbon, and especially of carbon modified with different materials, are currently most often used in the voltammetric analysis of various compounds, including preservatives. The objective of this paper is to present the characteristics and suitability of different carbon materials for the construction of working electrodes used in the voltammetric analysis. Various carbon materials were considered and briefly discussed. Their analytical application was presented on the example of the preservatives commonly used in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical preparations. It was shown that for the electroanalysis of preservatives, mainly carbon electrodes modified with various modifiers are used. These modifications ensure appropriate selectivity, high sensitivity, low limits of detection and quantification, as well as a wide linearity range of voltammetric methods of their identification and determination.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Photocatalytic Performance of ZnO–Graphene Nanocomposites: A Review

ZnO is an exciting material for photocatalysis applications due to its high activity, easy accessibility of raw materials, low production costs, and nontoxic. Several ZnO nano and microstructures can be obtained, such as nanoparticles, nanorods, micro flowers, microspheres, among others, depending on the preparation method and conditions. ZnO is a wide bandgap semiconductor presenting massive recombination of the generated charge carriers, limiting its photocatalytic efficiency and stability. It is common to mix it with metal, metal oxide, sulfides, polymers, and nanocarbon-based materials to improve its photocatalytic behavior. Therefore, ZnO–nanocarbon composites formation has been a viable alternative that leads to new, more active, and stable photocatalytic systems. Mainly, graphene is a well-known two-dimensional material, which could be an excellent candidate to hybridize with ZnO due to its excellent physical and chemical properties (e.g., high specific surface area, optical transmittance, and thermal conductivity, among others). This review analyses ZnO–graphene nanocomposites’ recent advances, addressing the synthesis methods and the resulting structural, morphological, optical, and electronic properties. Moreover, we examine the ZnO–graphene composites’ role in the photocatalytic degradation of organic/inorganic pollutants.
