Construction of Novel Metal-Free Graphene Oxide/Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanohybrids: A 2D–2D Amalgamation for the Effective Dedyeing of Waste Water

Fabrication of copper molybdate nanoflower combined polymeric graphitic carbon nitride heterojunction for water depollution: Synergistic photocatalytic performance and mechanism insight

In the scope, developed a novel copper molybdate decorated polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (CuMoO4@g-C3N4 or CMC) heterojunction nanocomposite in an easy solvothermal environment for the first time. The synthesized CMC improved the photocatalytic degradation of an antibiotic drug [ciprofloxacin (CIP)] and organic dye [Rhodamine B (RhB)]. Consequently, the CMC demonstrates a marvelous crystalline nature with ∼26 nm size, as obtained from XRD analysis. Besides, the surface morphology studies confirm the large-scale construction of flower-like CMC with a typical size of 10-15 nm. The CMC showed efficient catalytic activity for both the pollutants, achieving the degradation of 98% for RhB and 97% for CIP in 35 and 60 min, respectively. The reaction parameters including the concentration of pollutants, catalyst dosages, and scavengers are optimized for the best photocatalytic results. Notably, the trapping tests showed that the •OH and O2•- radicals are the primary oxidative species liable for the photocatalytic process. The recyclability test of the photocatalyst infers that the photocatalyst is highly stable up to the fifth recycle. Our work affords an efficient and ideal path to constructing the new g-C3N4-based architected photocatalyst for toxic wastewater treatment in the near future.

Understanding the intermediates and carbon dioxide adsorption of potassium chloride-incorporated graphitic carbon nitride with tailoring melamine and urea as precursors

In this study, we demonstrated the synthesis of potassium chloride (KCl)-incorporated graphitic carbon nitride, (g-C₃N₄, CN) with varying amounts of N-vacancies and pyridinic-N as well as enhanced Lewis basicity, via a single-step thermal polymerization by tailoring the precursors of melamine and urea for carbon oxide (CO₂) capture. Melamine, as a precursor, undergoes a phase transformation into melam and triazine-rich g-C₃N₄, whereas the addition of urea polymerizes the mixture to form melem and heptazine-rich g-C₃N₄ (CN11). Owing to the abundance of pyridinic-N and the high surface area, CN11 adsorbed higher amounts of CO₂ (44.52 μmol m^-2 at 25 °C and 1 bar of CO₂) than those reported for other template-free carbon materials. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that the enhanced CO₂ adsorption is due to the presence of pyridinic-N and Lewis basic sites on the surface. The intermediates of CO₂adsorption, including carbonate and bicarbonate species, attached to the CN samples were identified using in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). This work provides insights into the mechanism of CO₂ adsorption by comparing the structural features of the synthesized KCl-incorporated g-C₃N₄ samples_. CN11, with an excellent CO₂ uptake capacity, is viewed as a promising candidate for CO₂ capture and storage.

Boron Carbon Oxynitride as a Novel Metal-Free Photocatalyst

Boron-based nanomaterials are emerging as non-toxic, earth-abundant (photo)electrocatalyst materials in solar energy conversion for the production of solar hydrogen fuel and environmental remediation. Boron carbon oxynitride (BCNO) is a quaternary semiconductor with electronic, optical, and physicochemical properties that can be tuned by varying the composition of boron, nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen. However, the relationship between BCNO's structure and -photocatalytic activity relationship has yet to be explored. We performed an in-depth spectroscopic analysis to elucidate the effect of using two different nitrogen precursors and the effect of annealing temperatures in the preparation of BCNO. BCNO nanodisks (D = 6.7 ± 1.1 nm) with turbostratic boron nitride diffraction patterns were prepared using guanidine hydrochloride as the nitrogen source precursor upon thermal annealing at 800°C. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) surface elemental analysis of the BCNO nanodisks revealed the B, C, N, and O compositions to be 40.6%, 7.95%, 37.7%, and 13.8%, respectively. According to the solid-state 11B NMR analyses, the guanidine hydrochloride-derived BCNO nanodisks showed the formation of various tricoordinate BNx(OH)3-x species, which also served as one of the photocatalytic active sites. The XRD and in-depth spectroscopic analyses corroborated the preparation of BCNO-doped hexagonal boron nitride nanodisks. In contrast, the BCNO annealed at 600 °C using melamine as the nitrogen precursor consisted of layered nanosheets composed of B, C, N, and O atoms covalently bonded in a honeycomb lattice as evidence by the XRD, XPS, and solid-state NMR analysis (11B and 13C) analyses. The XPS surface elemental composition of the melamine-derived BCNO layered structures consisted of a high carbon composition (75.1%) with a relatively low boron (5.24%) and nitrogen (7.27%) composition, which indicated the formation of BCNO-doped graphene oxides layered sheet structures. This series of melamine-derived BCNO-doped graphene oxide layered structures were found to exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity, exceeding the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride. In this layered structure, the formation of the tetracoordinate BNx(OH)3-x(CO) species and the rich graphitic domains were proposed to play an important role in the photocatalytic activity of the BCNO-doped graphene oxides layered structures. The optical band gap energies were measured to be 5.7 eV and 4.2 eV for BCNO-doped hexagonal boron nitride nanodisks and BCNO-doped graphene oxides layered structures, respectively. Finally, BCNO exhibited an ultralong photoluminescence with an average decay lifetime of 1.58, 2.10, 5.18, and 8.14 µs for BGH01, BGH03, BMH01, BMH03, respectively. This study provides a novel metal-free photocatalytic system and provides the first structural analysis regarding the origin of BCNO-based photocatalyst.
