Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Characteristics of SrTiO3 Nanoparticles Induced Polyvinyl Chloride and Polyvinylidene Fluoride Blend Nanocomposites

Influence of Nano-CeO2 and Graphene Nanoplatelets on the Conductivity and Dielectric Properties of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Nanocomposite Films

Novel three-phase polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) based on cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) incorporated in a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix were formulated using a solution-casting approach. To understand the structural and morphological features of PVDF/CeO2/GNP nanocomposites (NCs), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses were accomplished. The PVDF/CeO2/GNP NCs displayed improved thermal stability which resulted from strong bonding between GNPs and CeO2 NPs and restriction of the polymer chain movement. The introduction of CeO2 NPs and GNPs within the PVDF matrix and good synergy between CeO2 NPs and GNPs led to variable mechanical properties of the prepared NCs. The PVDF/CeO2/GNP NCs portrayed reduced thermal stability, which could be due to the increased mobility of PVDF chains imposed by GNPs leading to the formation of volatile degradation products. Moreover, PVDF/CeO2/GNP NCs exhibited good electrical conductivity and high dielectric permittivity. The obtained dielectric permittivity value for the PVDF/CeO2/GNP NCs was 3-fold greater than PVDF/CeO2 NCs, making these novel tertiary composite materials a probable candidate for energy-storage applications.

Cobalt Ferrite/Polyetherimide Composites as Thermally Stable Materials for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Uses

The progress of the automated industry has introduced many benefits in our daily life, but it also produces undesired electromagnetic interference (EMI) that distresses the end-users and functionality of electronic devices. This article develops new composites based on a polyetherimide (PEI) matrix and cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) nanofiller (10-50 wt%) by mixing inorganic phase in the poly(amic acid) solution, followed by film casting and controlled heating, to acquire the corresponding imide structure. The composites were designed to contain both electric and magnetic dipole sources by including highly polarizable groups (phenyls, ethers, -CN) in the PEI structure and by loading this matrix with magnetic nanoparticles, respectively. The films exhibited high thermal stability, having the temperature at which decomposition begins in the interval of 450-487 °C. Magnetic analyses indicated a saturation magnetization, coercitive force, and magnetic remanence of 27.9 emu g^-1, 705 Oe, and 9.57 emu g^-1, respectively, for the PEI/CoFe₂O₄ 50 wt%. Electrical measurements evidenced an increase in the conductivity from 4.42 10^-9 S/cm for the neat PEI to 1.70 10^-8 S/cm for PEI/CoFe₂O₄ 50 wt% at 1 MHz. The subglass γ- and β-relaxations, primary relaxation, and conductivity relaxation were also examined depending on the nanofiller content. These novel composites are investigated from the point of view of their EMI shielding properties, showing that they are capable of attenuating the electric and magnetic parts of electromagnetic waves.

Recent Progress in Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Performance of Porous Polymer Nanocomposites—A Review

The urge to develop high-speed data transfer technologies for futuristic electronic and communication devices has led to more incidents of serious electromagnetic interference and pollution. Over the past decade, there has been burgeoning research interests to design and fabricate high-performance porous EM shields to tackle this undesired phenomenon. Polymer nanocomposite foams and aerogels offer robust, flexible and lightweight architectures with tunable microwave absorption properties and are foreseen as potential candidates to mitigate electromagnetic pollution. This review covers various strategies adopted to fabricate 3D porous nanocomposites using conductive nanoinclusions with suitable polymer matrices, such as elastomers, thermoplastics, bioplastics, conducting polymers, polyurethanes, polyimides and nanocellulose. Special emphasis has been placed on novel 2D materials such as MXenes, that are envisaged to be the future of microwave-absorbing materials for next-generation electronic devices. Strategies to achieve an ultra-low percolation threshold using environmentally benign and facile processing techniques have been discussed in detail.

Synergistic effect of barium titanate nanoparticles and graphene quantum dots on the dielectric properties and conductivity of poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoroethylene) films

PVDF-HFP/BaTiO₃/GQDs polymer nanocomposite films with good flexibility and high dielectric constant (ϵ) at low frequency were prepared via solution casting technique. Different compositions of BaTiO₃ (non-conducting ceramic nanofiller) and Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) (conducting nanofiller) utilized as co-filler were embedded in poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoroethylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymer matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques were employed to characterize the prepared nanocomposite films. The mechanical properties of PVDF-HFP/BaTiO₃/GQDs nanocomposite films were also investigated. Dielectric properties of nanocomposite films such as dielectric constant (ϵ), dielectric loss (tanδ) and AC conductivity ( σ_ac ) were also determined as a function of frequency and temperature. Highest ϵ with relatively low tanδ obtained at low frequency for maximum temperature in all polymer nanocomposite films. The σ_ac increases from lower (100 Hz) to higher frequency up to 100 kHz and drops to zero for the further increment of frequency. These results suggest that the PVDF-HFP/BaTiO₃/GQDs nanocomposites are the most promising materials for energy storage applications.
