An Assessment of the Aggregation and Adsorption Behavior of the Sodium Dodecylsulfate–Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide Mixed Surfactant System in Aqueous Medium

Effect of Mixed Surfactant on Evaporation Driven Salt Crystallization Morphology in Sessile Droplets

Extensive studies have been conducted to manipulate the morphology of sodium chloride salt crystals to tailor their physical and chemical properties. Among the myriad factors considered, the effects of the substrate and additives have profound impacts on the types of salt depositions. Surface charge effects and various ionic surfactants influence ion movement, resulting in diverse crystal morphologies. This manuscript aims to provide a consolidated summary by concurrently studying multiple effects to uncover the salt crystal morphology under the influence of two oppositely charged ionic surfactants on charged and neutral surfaces. The cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide induces skeletal crystal growth by retarding salt precipitation until supersaturation is reached. Conversely, the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate hinders ion diffusion at the three-phase contact line. Each surfactant effect is dominant at higher molar concentrations. Surface charge affects the amount of surface adsorption and free-moving ions within the saline surfactant droplets, greatly influencing the number of salt crystals formed on the neutral substrate. However, charge neutralization at the highest concentrations of both surfactants nullifies the surface charge effect, resulting in practically indistinguishable salt crystals with similar sizes and numbers, leading to only a small area difference of 1461 μm2. This study provides insights into the kinetics of crystallization under the combined influence of anionic, cationic, and surface charge interactions. The findings can serve as a future reference for predicting and controlling ionic interactions and crystal morphology.

High Interfacial Viscoelasticity of Aqueous Mixed Dodecyltrimethylammonium Bromide-Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Surfactants Forming Inclusion Complexes with α-Cyclodextrin

Mixtures of anionic-cationic surfactants have shown high synergistic effects in the bulk solution and at the liquid/air interface. These studies have been limited to a reduced concentration range, where there is no formation of aggregates or precipitates. The addition of host molecules, such as cyclodextrins, to these systems reduces the effects of precipitation by forming inclusion complexes and also modifies the values of other surfactant properties, like the Krafft temperature and the critical aggregation concentration (CAC). We studied the interfacial synergistic effects promoted by electrostatic interactions, using the Rosen model to calculate an interaction parameter for mixtures of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) in the presence of α-cyclodextrin (αCD), in aqueous solutions. We measured the CAC of SDS-DTAB-αCD mixtures using a pendant drop tensiometer, with the αCD concentration fixed at 10 mM and at 283.15 K. We performed rheological measurements on the mixtures where the surfactant total concentration is fixed below the measured CAC, varying the αCD concentration and temperature. We found that the dilatational modulus shows a clear correlation with the interaction parameter. It appears that the attractive interactions within the film are those due to the inclusion complexes formed by two αCD and one surfactant molecule, which according to the previous studies, is the dominant species in both the bulk and liquid/air interface. The synergistic effect observed here for SDS-DTAB surfactant mixtures with αCD can be applied to systems and processes (drop emission, drug delivery methods, stabilization of viral capsids and bacterial membranes, and emulsification) where interfacial processes require specific viscoelastic properties.

Molecular Dynamics Studies on Effective Surface-Active Additives: Toward Hard Water-Resistant Chemical Flooding for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Divalent ions, which are omnipresent in brine, may be detrimental to surfactant functionalities during chemical flooding in the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process. Surfactant blending is one potential solution to overcome such an adverse effect. Herein, we report a molecular dynamics (MD) study to investigate the molecular arrangement and possible applications of surfactant blending in hard water-resistant chemical flooding for oil recovery. We chose commonly used anionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), as primary surfactants. The non-ionic (propanol) and cationic [cetrimonium bromide (CTAB)] surfactants with a wide range of concentrations are introduced to the primary system. We demonstrate that CTAB can disaggregate the cation bridging when their concentration is above a certain threshold. This threshold value is related to the surfactant and cosurfactant surface charge in the interface region. The cation bridging density is maintained at a low level when the sum of surfactants and cosurfactant interface charges is neutral or positive. On the other hand, propanol barely disaggregates the cation bridging. When propanol concentration is above a certain value, it even facilitates the cation bridging formation. Both propanol and CTAB can further decrease the oil-brine interfacial tension (IFT) while having different efficacies (IFT decrement rate is different as their interface concentration increases). More rapid IFT decrement is observed when cation bridging is disaggregated (i.e., in systems with high CTAB concentrations). Increasing propanol concentration barely affects hydrogen bond (H-bond) formation between SDS and H₂O because of a low propanol distribution around SDS. On the other hand, the first increasing and then decreasing trend in H-bond density between SDS and H₂O is observed as CTAB concentration increases. Our work should provide important insights into designing chemical formulas in chemical flooding applications.
