Dislocation of the 137Cs and 40K radionuclides in the podsol profiles of the Tatra Mountain soils (South Poland)

Sedimentary conditions based on the vertical distribution of radionuclides in small dystrophic lakes: a case study of Toporowe Stawy Lakes (Tatra Mountains, Poland)

The aim of this work was to prove the use of radionuclides deposited in sediment core taken from an overgrowing dystrophic lakes surrounded by marsh-peat vegetation to estimate sedimentary conditions. Sediment core samples were taken from the Toporowe Stawy Lakes (Niżni (TSN) and Wyżni (TSW); Tatra Mountains). The sampling was done using a Limnos corer. After the physical sample preparations, gamma measurements were performed. Radiochemical analysis was applied with the aim of determining ²¹⁰Pb radioactivity by means of ²¹⁰Po. The mean values for TSN lake are as follows: ¹³⁷Cs ~ 123 Bq∙kg^-1, ⁴⁰ K ~ 389 Bq∙kg^-1, ²²⁸Th ~ 55 Bq∙kg^-1, ²²⁶Ra ~ 86 Bq∙kg^-1, ²⁴¹Am ~ 5 Bq∙kg^-1, and ²¹⁰Pb_uns ~ 180 Bq∙kg^-1. For TSW lake, the radioactivity levels of ²²⁶Ra and ²⁴¹Am are comparable to the TSN. The mean values of ¹³⁷Cs, ⁴⁰ K, and ²²⁸Th are almost twice as high as in TSN. The level of ²¹⁰Pb in uppermost layer of TSN is higher than in TSW. Sediments were dated by use of ²¹⁰Pb method, and the rate of sedimentation of each layer was also estimated. Basic chemometric tools were used to confirm the way of deposition of radionuclide, find the correlations between variables, and compare analyzed lakes. It was concluded that the presented type of lakes are a valuable source of information and the vertical distribution of radionuclide can be used to interpret the source of material supply and factors that influence the sedimentation process in recent 150-200 years.

The evaluation of 137Cs radioactivities in soils taken from the Babia Góra National Park

The aim of this work was to determine ¹³⁷Cs and ⁴⁰K radioactivities in soil samples taken from the Babia Góra National Park (BPN) in south Poland. The cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to discuss the obtained data. 10 cm thick soil cores were collected from the BPN area. Each sample was divided into three sub-samples. The samples were dried, homogenized and packed in polyethylene containers. The radioactivities of ¹³⁷Cs and ⁴⁰K were measured by means of gamma spectrometry. It was found that ¹³⁷Cs radioactivity in the whole 10 cm soil cores was in the range from 1,916 to 28,551 Bq m^-2. The radioactivity of ⁴⁰K varied from 1,642 to 25,654 Bq m^-2. Using CA it was possible to diverse the soils taking into account soil types. By use of the PCA method, it was chosen three factors which are appropriate to characterize researched parameters.

Concentrations of 137Cs and 40K radionuclides and some heavy metals in soil samples from the eastern part of the Main Ridge of the Flysch Carpathians

The aim of the study is to present the results of determination of radioactivity of artificial ¹³⁷Cs and natural ⁴⁰K and certain heavy metals in soil samples collected from the eastern part of the Main Ridge of Carpathians, including the Beskid Niski Mts and the Bieszczady Mts. The evaluation of level of radionuclides was based on the bulk density analysis of the soil. A valuable finding of the study was a good linear correlation between the level of ¹³⁷Cs concentration and bulk density of the soil as well as an inverse correlation between radioactivity of natural ⁴⁰K and tested soil density. This might indicate though a high competitiveness of these elements between each other. Moreover, a good correlation between the concentrations of artificial element ¹³⁷Cs and Pb has been also observed in soil samples collected from the Beskid Niski Mts. In most cases, the level of artificial ¹³⁷Cs was lower comparing to an average ¹³⁷Cs concentration established for soils in Poland.

The potential health hazard due to elevated radioactivity in old uranium mines in Dolina Białego, Tatra Mountains, Poland

Natural radioactivity is one of the essential components of the environment. Unlike the Sudety mountains area in Poland, the Tatra Mountains were not the subject of wide survey as regards the levels of natural radioactivity. Especially, the concentrations of radon (natural radioactive gas) have not been investigated there in terms of their possible negative health impact. Within the frame of bilateral cooperation between the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kraków, Poland, and the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the measurements of natural radioactive elements in old uranium mines in the Tatra National Park were performed in June 2010. The investigated sites were located in Dolina Białego (The Valley of the White). One of the mines is situated near the tourist path. The paper presents the results of complex measurements of natural radioactivity in both uranium drifts. The concentration of radon gas inside the mining drifts exceeded 28,000 Bq m(-3). Also, very high gamma dose rates were observed (up to 5600 nSv h(-1)). The maximum concentrations of natural radioactive elements (potassium (40)K, radium (226)Ra, thorium (232)Th) in rock samples amounted to 535, 2137, and 18 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The effective dose rates due to radon and thoron inhalation have been assessed as 0.013 mSv h(-1) (for the lowest concentration) and 0.121 mSv h(-1) (for the highest concentration).
