Abstract
In this work, using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and polymer-assisted ultrafiltration experiments, we explore the adsorption and removal of uranyl ions from aqueous solutions using poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers. The effects of uranyl ion concentration and the pH of the solution were examined for PAMAM dendrimers of generations 3, 4, and 5. Our simulation results show that PAMAM has a high adsorption capacity for the uranyl ions. The adsorption capacity increases with increasing concentration of uranyl ions for all 3 generations of PAMAM in agreement with experimental findings. We find that the number of uranyl ions bound to PAMAM is significantly higher in acidic solutions (pH < 3) as compared to neutral solutions (pH ∼ 7) for all uranyl ion concentrations. Additionally, we find an increase in the number of adsorbed uranyl ions to PAMAM with the increase in the dendrimer generation. This increase is due to the greater number of binding sites present for higher-generation PAMAM dendrimers. Our simulation study shows that nitrate ions form a solvation shell around uranyl ions, which allows them to bind to PAMAM binding sites, including the amide, amine, and carbonyl groups. In polymer-assisted ultrafiltration (PAUF) experiments, the removal percentage of uranyl ions by G3 PAMAM dendrimer increased from 36.3% to 42.6% as the metal ion concentration increased from 2.1 × 10-5 M to 10.5 × 10-5 M at a pH of 2. Our combined experiment and simulation study suggests that PAMAM is an effective adsorbent for removing uranyl ions from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Since nuclear wastes are the most important wastes in terms of health and the environment, they are evaluated differently within nuclear reactors as well as in terms of their use in medical and industrial applications. In some cases, emergency intervention is necessary due to the amount of radioactivity or the physical and/or chemical conditions. . The purpose of this study is to investigate the adsorption properties of nano Ca3Y2B4O12 (CYBO) material synthesized by the sol-gel combustion method for the adsorption of Thorium (IV) from an aqueous medium. We tested how pH (3-8), the concentration of Th (IV) (25-125 mg/L), amount of adsorbent value (0.005-0.08 g) and temperature (20-60 °C), affect adsorption efficiency. The best possible combinations of these parameters were examined by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). R2 values for RSM and ANN were 0.9964 and 0.9666, respectively. According to the models, the adsorption capacity under the optimum conditions determined for the RSM and ANN model was found to be 134.62 mg/g and 125.12 mg/g, respectively.

Abstract
In recent years, the problem of heavy metal pollution has become increasingly prominent, so it is urgent to develop new heavy metal adsorption materials. Compared with many adsorbents, the polyamide-amine dendrimers (PAMAMs) have attracted extensive attention of researchers due to its advantages of macro-molecular cavity, abundant surface functional groups, non-toxicity, high efficiency and easy modification. But in fact, it is not very suitable as an adsorbent because of its solubility and difficulty in separation, which also limits its application in environmental remediation. Therefore, in order to make up for the shortcomings of this material to a certain extent, the synthesis and development of polymer composite materials based on PAMAMs are increasingly prominent in the direction of solving heavy metal pollution. In this paper, the application of composites based on PAMAMs and inorganic or organic components in the adsorption of heavy metal ions is reviewed. Finally, the prospects and challenges of PAMAMs composites for removal of heavy metal ions in water environment are discussed.

Abstract
Environmental problems have reached enormous dimensions, driving efforts to remove and recycle waste from energy and industrial production. In particular, removing the radionuclide contamination that occurs as the nuclear industry grows is difficult and costly, but it is vital. Technologic and economical methods and advanced facilities are needed for the separation and purification of radioactive elements arising from the nuclear industry and uranium and thorium mining. With the adsorption method, which is the most basic separation and recovery method, the use of high-capacity nanomaterials has recently gained great importance in reducing the activity of the waste, reducing its volume by transforming it into solid form, and recovering and removing liquid radioactive wastes that might harm the ecological environment. This study aimed to determine the adsorption properties of metal ion-doped nano ZnO (nano-ZnO:Al) material synthesized by the microwave-assisted gel combustion method for the adsorption of thorium (IV) from aqueous media. First, characterization processes such as XRD, SEM, BET and zeta potential were performed to observe changes in the host ZnO adsorbent structure caused by the doping process. Later, this was optimized via the response surface method (RSM), which is widely used in the characterization of the adsorption properties of thorium (IV) from aqueous solutions. Such characterization is commonly used in industrial research. We tested how pH (3-8), temperature (20-60 °C), Th (IV) concentration (25-125 mg/L) and adsorbent amount (0.01-0.1 g) affect adsorption efficiency. The best possible combinations of these parameters were determined by RSM. It was calculated by RSM that the design fits the second order (quadratic) model using the central composite design (CCD) for the design of experimental conditions. R2 and R2 adjusted values from the parameters showing the model fit were 0.9923 and 0.9856, respectively. According to the model, the experimental adsorption capacity was 192.3 mg/g for the doped-ZnO nanomaterial under the theoretically specified optimum conditions. Also, the suitability of Th (IV) adsorption to isotherms was examined and thermodynamic parameters were calculated.

Abstract
This paper proposes the use of Anoxybacillus flavithermus SO-15 immobilized on iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) as a novel magnetized biosorbent for the preconcentrations of uranium (U) and thorium (Th). The SPE procedure was based on biosorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) on a column of iron oxide NPs loaded with dead and dried thermophilic bacterial biomass prior to U(VI) and Th(IV) measurements by ICP-OES. The biosorbent characteristicswere explored using FT-IR, SEM, and EDX. Significant operational factors such as solution pH, volume and flow rate of the sample solution, amounts of dead bacteria and iron oxide nanoparticles, matrix interference effect, eluent type, and repeating use of the biosorbent on process yield were studied. The biosorption capacities were found as 62.7 and 56.4 mg g-1 for U(VI) and Th(IV), respectively. The novel extraction process has been successfullyapplied to the tap, river, and lake water samples for preconcentrations of U(VI) and Th(IV).

Abstract
The presence of toxic pollutants such as dyes and metal ions at higher concentrations in water is very harmful to the environment. Removal of these pollutants using diatomaceous earth or diatomite (DE) and surface-modified DE has been extensively explored due to their excellent physio-chemical properties and low cost. Therefore, naturally available DE being inexpensive, their surface modified adsorbents could be one of the potential candidates for the wastewater treatment in the future. In this context, the current review has been summarized for the removal of both pollutants i.e., dyes and metal ions by surface-modified DE using the facile adsorption process. In addition, this review is prominently focused on the various modification process of DE, their cost-effectiveness; the physio-chemical characteristics and their maximum adsorption capacity. Further, real-time scenarios of reported adsorbents were tabulated based on the cost of the process along with the adsorption capacity of these adsorbents.

Abstract
It is an important task to develop the technologies for the extraction of thorium from strong HNO3 media with high efficiency. In this work, solvothermal polymerization of trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TRIM) and vinylphosphonic acid (VPA) has been used to synthesize a novel polymer material P (TRIM-VPA) bearing a phosphonic acid ligand for thorium entrapment in strong HNO3 media. Under the current experiment condition, the polymer adsorbents showed a record-breaking maximum adsorption capacity for thorium (403.2 mg g-1) with an excellent selectivity for thorium over Gd(III), Nd(III), Ce(III), Sr(III), Sm(III), and La(III) in 4 mol L-1 HNO3 media at 298 K. The content of P═O ligands existing on P (TRIM-VPA) has an obvious influence on the adsorption capacities for thorium. Increasing the content of P═O ligands would result in higher adsorption capacity of thorium. The isothermal data fitted well the Langmuir model, and the sorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption behavior was not only spontaneous but also endothermic in reality. Both XPS and FTIR studies revealed that the adsorption interaction for thorium extraction was acquired only via the coordination of P═O groups anchored on P (TRIM-VPA) with thorium. Moreover, P (TRIM-VPA) still had high adsorption capacity after five sorption-desorption cycles in 4 M HNO3 media. DFT calculation suggested that a 1:2 ratio of Th(IV) with the P═O group on the same graft chain validated the experimental findings. Thus, the solvothermal polymerization method might be a promising way for the synthesis of the adsorbents for the highly efficient extraction of thorium from strong HNO3 media.

Abstract
The adsorption of thorium (IV) from aqueous solutions onto a novel nanoporous ZnO particles prepared by microwave assisted combustion was studied using batch methods under different experimental conditions. The effect of contact time, solution pH, initial concentration and temperature on adsorption process was studied. The ability of this material to remove Th (IV) from aqueous solution was characterises by Langmuir, Freunlinch and Temkin adsorption isotherms. The adsorption percent and distribution coefficient for nanoporous ZnO powders in optimum conditions were 97% ± 1.02; 8080 L kg(-1)for Th (IV), respectively. Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity of nanoporous ZnO for Th (IV) was found to be 1500 g kg(-1). Thermodynamic parameters were determined and discussed. The results indicated that nanoporous ZnO was suitable as sorbent material for recovery and adsorption of Th (IV) ions from aqueous solutions. The radioactive Th (VI) in surface water, sea water and waste waters from technologies producing nuclear fuels, mining (uranium and thorium) and laboratories working with radioactive materials (uranium and thorium) can be removed with this nanoporous ZnO.
