Insight to biotechnological utility of phycochemicals from cyanobacterium Anabaena sp.: An overview

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are well-known for the ability to excrete extra-cellular products, as a variety of cyanochemicals (phycocompounds) of curio with several extensive therapeutic applications. Among these phycocompound, the cyanotoxins from certain water-bloom forming taxa are toxic to biota, including crocodiles. Failure of current non-renewable source compounds in producing sustainable and non-toxic therapeutics led the urgency of discovering products from natural sources. Particularly, compounds of the filamentous N2-fixing Anabaena sp. have effective antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. Today, such newer compounds are the potential targets for the possible novel chemical scaffolds, suitable for mainstream-drug development cascades. Bioactive compounds of Anabaena sp. such as, anatoxins, hassallidins and phycobiliproteins have proven their inherent antibacterial, antifungal, and antineoplastic activities, respectively. Herein, the available details of the biomass production and the inherent phyco-constituents namely, alkaloids, lipids, phenols, peptides, proteins, polysaccharides, terpenoids and cyanotoxins are considered, along with geographical distributions and morphological characteristics of the cyanobacterium. The acquisitions of cyanochemicals in recent years have newly addressed several pharmaceutical aliments, and the understanding of the associated molecular interactions of phycochemicals have been considered, for plausible use in drug developments in future.

Enhancement of Uranium Recycling from Tailings Caused by the Microwave Irradiation-Induced Composite Oxidation of the Fe-Mn Binary System

The extraction of uranium (U)-related minerals from raw ore sands via a leaching procedure would produce enormous amounts of tailings, not only causing radioactivity contamination to surroundings but also wasting the potential U utilization. Effective recycling of U from U tailings is propitious to the current issues in U mining industries. In this study, the influence of the composite oxidation of Fe(III) and Mn(VII) intensified by microwave (MW) irradiation on the acid leaching of U from tailings was comprehensively explored in sequential and coupling systems. The U leaching activities from the tailing specimens were explicitly enhanced by MW irradiation. The composite oxidation caused by Fe(III) and Mn(VII) further facilitated the leaching of U ions from the tailing under MW irradiation in two systems. Maximum leaching efficiencies of 84.61, 80.56, and 92.95% for U ions were achieved in the Fe(III)-, Mn(VII)-, and Fe(III)-Mn(VII)-participated coupling systems, respectively. The inappropriateness of the shrinking core model (SCM) demonstrated by the linear fittings and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for the two systems explained a reverse increase of solid cores in the later stage of leaching experiments. The internal migration of oxidant ions into the particle cores enhanced by MW accelerated the dissolution of Al, Fe, and Mn constituents under acidic conditions, which further strengthened U extraction from tailing specimens.

Azolla filiculoides L. as a source of metal-tolerant microorganisms

The metal hyperaccumulator Azolla filiculoides is accompanied by a microbiome potentially supporting plant during exposition to heavy metals. We hypothesized that the microbiome exposition to selected heavy metals will reveal metal tolerant strains. We used Next Generation Sequencing technique to identify possible metal tolerant strains isolated from the metal-treated plant (Pb, Cd, Cr(VI), Ni, Au, Ag). The main dominants were Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria constituting together more than 97% of all reads. Metal treatment led to changes in the composition of the microbiome and showed significantly higher richness in the Pb-, Cd- and Cr-treated plant in comparison with other (95–105 versus 36–44). In these treatments the share of subdominant Actinobacteria (0.4–0.8%), Firmicutes (0.5–0.9%) and Bacteroidetes (0.2–0.9%) were higher than in non-treated plant (respectively: 0.02, 0.2 and 0.001%) and Ni-, Au- and Ag-treatments (respectively: <0.4%, <0.2% and up to 0.2%). The exception was Au-treatment displaying the abundance 1.86% of Bacteroidetes. In addition, possible metal tolerant genera, namely: Acinetobacter, Asticcacaulis, Anabaena, Bacillus, Brevundimonas, Burkholderia, Dyella, Methyloversatilis, Rhizobium and Staphylococcus, which form the core microbiome, were recognized by combining their abundance in all samples with literature data. Additionally, the presence of known metal tolerant genera was confirmed: Mucilaginibacter, Pseudomonas, Mycobacterium, Corynebacterium, Stenotrophomonas, Clostridium, Micrococcus, Achromobacter, Geobacter, Flavobacterium, Arthrobacter and Delftia. We have evidenced that A. filiculoides possess a microbiome whose representatives belong to metal-resistant species which makes the fern the source of biotechnologically useful microorganisms for remediation processes.
