Layered double hydroxides as heterogeneous catalyst systems in the cross-coupling reactions: an overview

Magnetic curcumin-copper graphene oxide as facile and recyclable heterogeneous nanocatalyst for preparation of polyhydroquinolines and sulfoxides

In this research project, a versatile procedure has been designed for the preparation of supported copper@curcumin on magnetic graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO@Fe3O4@Cur-Cu). The structure of prepared nanocatalyst was characterized by several techniques including; Fourier transform infrared, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy analyses. The catalytic properties of GO@Fe3O4@Cur-Cu were examined for the efficient synthesis of polyhydroquinolines as well as the preparation of sulfoxides through selective oxidation of sulfides in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.

A Novel Insight into the Ullmann Homocoupling Reactions Performed in Heterogeneous Catalytic Systems

The Ullmann reaction has been reported to be the first cross-coupling reaction performed by using a transition metal catalyst. This reaction has been initially considered as the copper-catalyzed homocoupling of aryl halides, leading to the formation of symmetrical biaryl compounds via the generation of novel C-C bonds. Although this reaction has been extensively studied in recent decades and valuable results have been achieved, there are still considerable efforts focused on the development of novel catalytic systems, mild reaction conditions, and extended substrate scope. The mechanistic aspects of the Ullmann homocoupling reaction have also been investigated, as related to the introduction of new sustainable strategies and green procedures. The application of recyclable heterogeneous catalysts has been found to overcome most of the limitations associated with the harsh reaction conditions of the original Ullmann reaction. More recently, copper-based catalytic systems have also been replaced by palladium nanoparticles, ionic palladium species, gold nanoparticles, and palladium-gold bimetallic systems. In this review, current results reported on the Ullmann homocoupling reaction are discussed, with an emphasis on the development of novel catalytic systems, which can be efficiently used under heterogeneous conditions.

Palladium(0)-catalyzed aryne annulation: a powerful strategy for the synthesis of thio-bridged compounds

A method for the construction of various thio-bridged compounds is developed using readily available o-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates as a source of aryne precursor, catalyzed by simple Pd(dba)₂/dppe complex. This operationally simple and modular protocol allows thio-bridged compound via C(sp²)-C(sp²) and C(sp²)-C(sp³) bond formation in promising yields with a broad substrate scope. The key part is in situ generation of an aryne from o-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflates and their subsequent intermolecular annulation.

Stabilization of ruthenium on biochar-nickel magnetic nanoparticles as a heterogeneous, practical, selective, and reusable nanocatalyst for the Suzuki C-C coupling reaction in water

Waste recycling and the use of recyclable and available catalysts are important principles in green chemistry in science and industrial research. Therefore in this study, biochar nanoparticles were prepared from biomass pyrolysis. Then, they were magnetized with nickel nanoparticles to improve their recycling. Further, the magnetic biochar nanoparticles (biochar-Ni MNPs) were modified by dithizone ligand and then applied for the fabrication of a ruthenium catalyst (Ru-dithizone@biochar-Ni MNPs). This nanocatalyst was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDX), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) techniques. The XRD studies of Ru in the nanocatalyst showed that the crystalline structure of ruthenium in the Ru-dithizone@biochar-Ni MNPs was hcp. Another principle of green chemistry is the use of safe and inexpensive solvents, the most suitable of which is water. Therefore, the catalytic activity of this catalyst was investigated as a practical, selective, and recyclable nanocatalyst in the Suzuki carbon-carbon coupling reaction in aqueous media. The VSM curve of this catalyst showed that it could be easily recovered using an external magnet, and recycled multiple times. Also, VSM analysis of the recovered catalyst indicated the good magnetic stability of this catalyst after repeated use.

Catalytic Synthesis of Methacrolein via the Condensation of Formaldehyde and Propionaldehyde with L-Proline Intercalated Layered Double Hydroxides

Aldol condensation reactions are very important C–C coupling reactions in organic chemistry. In this study, the catalytic performance of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in the aldol condensation reaction of formaldehyde (FA) and propionaldehyde (PA) was investigated. The MxAl-LDHs (denoted as re-MxAl–LDHs; M = Ca and Mg; X = 2–4), as heterogeneous basic catalysts toward the aldol condensation reaction, were prepared via a two-step procedure. The catalyst exhibited a high PA conversion (82.59%), but the methacrolein (MAL) selectivity was only 36.01% due to the limitation of the alkali-catalyzed mechanism. On this basis, the direct intercalation of L-proline into LDHs also has been investigated. The influences of several operating conditions, including the temperature, reaction time, and substrate content, on the reaction results were systematically studied, and the optimized reaction conditions were obtained. The optimized Mg3Al–Pro-LDHs catalyst exhibited a much higher MAL selectivity than those of re-MgxAl–LDHs.
