Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of compound probiotics on growth performance, serum biochemical and immune indices, antioxidant capacity, and the intestinal tissue morphology of Shaoxing ducks. A total of 640 1-day-old healthy Shaoxing ducks of similar body weight were randomly divided into two treatment groups with eight replicates each and forty ducks per replicate. The ducks were fed a basal diet (Ctrl) or a basal diet supplemented with 0.15% compound probiotics (CP) for 125 d. The results revealed that the live body weight (BW; day 85 and 125) and the average daily gain (ADG; 28−85 and 85−125 d) of the CP group were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of the Ctrl group. In the CP group, total protein and total cholesterol contents were significantly increased (p < 0.05) on days 28 and 85, while triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein contents were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) on day 85. Furthermore, interferon-γ content was significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the CP group on days 28, 85, and 125. Interleukin-2 content was significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the CP group on days 28 and 85. Interleukin-4 content was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in the CP group on day 85. Moreover, in the CP group, superoxide dismutase content was significantly increased (p < 0.05) on days 28 and 125, and glutathione peroxidase content was significantly increased (p < 0.05) on day 125. The crypt depth (CD) in the duodenum of the CP group was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) on days 28 and 125, whereas the villus height (VH) in the jejunum of the CP group was significantly increased (p < 0.05) on days 85 and 125. The VH/CD ratio in the ileum of the CP group was significantly increased (p < 0.05) on days 28 and 85. The VH in the ileum of the CP group was significantly increased (p < 0.05) on day 28. The CD in the ileum of the CP group was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) on day 28. In summary, the compound probiotics improved the growth performance, increased serum biochemical and immune indices, increased antioxidant capacity, and improved the intestinal tissue morphology of Shaoxing ducks.

Abstract
Background Duck is an ancient domesticated animal with high economic value, used for its meat, eggs, and feathers. However, the origin of indigenous Chinese ducks remains elusive. To address this question, we performed whole-genome resequencing to first explore the genetic relationship among variants of these domestic ducks with their potential wild ancestors in eastern China, as well as understand how the their genomes were shaped by different natural and artificial selective pressures. Results Here, we report the resequencing of 60 ducks from Chinese spot-billed ducks (Anas zonorhyncha), mallards (Anas platyrhnchos), Fenghua ducks, Shaoxing ducks, Shanma ducks and Cherry Valley Pekin ducks of eastern China (ten from each population) at an average effective sequencing depth of ~ 6× per individual. The results of population and demographic analysis revealed a deep phylogenetic split between wild (Chinese spot-billed ducks and mallards) and domestic ducks. By applying selective sweep analysis, we identified that several candidate genes, important pathways and GO categories associated with artificial selection were functionally related to cellular adhesion, type 2 diabetes, lipid metabolism, the cell cycle, liver cell proliferation, and muscle functioning in domestic ducks. Conclusion Genetic structure analysis showed a close genetic relationship of Chinese spot-billed ducks and mallards, which supported that Chinese spot-billed ducks contributed to the breeding of domestic ducks. During the long history of artificial selection, domestic ducks have developed a complex biological adaptation to captivity. Abstract
Short tandem repeats (STRs) are usually associated with genetic diseases and gene regulatory functions, and are also important genetic markers for analysis of evolutionary, genetic diversity and forensic. However, for the majority of STRs in the duck genome, their population genetic properties and functional impacts remain poorly defined. Recent advent of next generation sequencing (NGS) has offered an opportunity for profiling large numbers of polymorphic STRs. Here, we reported a population-scale analysis of STR variation using genome resequencing in mallard and Pekin duck. Our analysis provided the first genome-wide duck STR reference including 198,022 STR loci with motif size of 2–6 base pairs. We observed a relatively uneven distribution of STRs in different genomic regions, which indicates that the occurrence of STRs in duck genome is not random, but undergoes a directional selection pressure. Using genome resequencing data of 23 mallard and 26 Pekin ducks, we successfully identified 89,891 polymorphic STR loci. Intensive analysis of this dataset suggested that shorter repeat motif, longer reference tract length, higher purity, and residing outside of a coding region are all associated with an increase in STR variability. STR genotypes were utilized for population genetic analysis, and the results showed that population structure and divergence patterns among population groups can be efficiently captured. In addition, comparison between Pekin duck and mallard identified 3,122 STRs with extremely divergent allele frequency, which overlapped with a set of genes related to nervous system, energy metabolism and behavior. The evolutionary analysis revealed that the genes containing divergent STRs may play important roles in phenotypic changes during duck domestication. The variation analysis of STRs in population scale provides valuable resource for future study of genetic diversity and genome evolution in duck.

Abstract
The mud crab Scylla paramamosain plays a significant role in fishery resources in China. In this study, we developed 18 polymorphic microsatellite markers in this important crab by 5' anchored PCR technique. A total of 125 alleles were detected in a single population of 32 individuals of S. paramamosain. The number of alleles per locus ranged from five to nine, with the allele size ranging from 166 to 316 bp. The polymorphism information content (PIC), observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.39 to 0.88, from 0.33 to 0.92 and from 0.42 to 0.86, respectively. Three loci (Scypa13, Scypa14 and Scypa15) deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) after Bonferroni correction (P < 0.0028), and no linkage disequilibrium was found between loci pairs. These polymorphic microsatellite markers will be useful for the study of population genetic structure, construction of genetic linkage maps and mapping of economically quantitative trait loci (QTL) in S. paramamosain.
