Abstract
BACKGROUND Returning to work is a key outcome of rehabilitation and social re-integration after lower limb amputation. It is important to understand what biopsychosocial factors contribute to returning to work after dysvascular amputation. OBJECTIVE Examining relative contributions of functional and contextual predictors of returning to work in participants with lower limb amputation due to diabetes and other dysvascular diseases. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional. METHODS Return-to-work outcome, biopsychosocial characteristics including physical functioning, self-efficacy & perceived ability, and socioeconomical support data were collected from a purposive sample (n = 57) in a multi-state collaborative research network. Grouped Weighted Quantile Sum model analysis was conducted to evaluate relative contributions of biopsychosocial predictors. RESULTS Less than 30% of the participants returned to work after their amputation. Physical functioning (odds ratio = 10.19; 95% CI 2.46-72.74) was the most important predictor group. Working before amputation, prosthetic mobility, and access to rehabilitation care were also identified as key factors associated with returning to work. CONCLUSIONS Fewer than 1 in 3 participants with dysvascular amputation returned to work, despite an average age of only 54 years at the time of amputation. Physical functioning was shown to be the most important predictor, while socioeconomic factors such as a lack of access to care also contribute to not returning to work after dysvascular amputation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Almost half of patients discharged from hospital are readmitted or return to the emergency department (ED) within 90 days. Non-adherence to medication changes made during hospitalisation and the use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) both contribute to postdischarge adverse events. We developed Smart About Meds (SAM), a patient-centred mobile application that targets medication non-adherence and PIMs use. This protocol describes a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate SAM. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A pragmatic, stratified RCT will evaluate SAM among 3250 adult patients discharged from hospital. At discharge, consenting participants will be randomised 1:1 to usual care or SAM. SAM integrates novel patient-centred features with pharmacist monitoring to manage non-adherence to new medication regimens. SAM also notifies patients of PIMs in their regimen, with advice to discuss with their physician.Following discharge, patients will be followed for 90 days to measure the primary composite outcome of ED visits, hospital readmissions and death. Secondary outcomes will include primary adherence to medication changes, secondary adherence to disease-modifying medications, patient empowerment and health-related quality of life.The primary outcome will be analysed according to intention-to-treat. Multivariable logistic regression will estimate differences between treatment groups in the proportion of patients experiencing the primary outcome and will assess modification of intervention effects by hospital, unit, age, sex and comorbidity burden. With a sample size of 3250, the study will have 80% power to detect a 5% absolute reduction in the primary outcome. Binary and continuous secondary outcomes will be assessed using multivariable logistic and linear regression, respectively. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The Research Ethics Board of the McGill University Health Centre in Montréal, Canada has approved this study. Results will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at scientific conferences. If effective, SAM will be made available in app stores. Abstract
PURPOSE College students with concussion experience academic, cognitive and psychosocial challenges, yet frequently lack supports necessary for successful reintegration into school. Success in College after Concussion with Effective Student Supports (SUCCESS) is a virtual peer mentoring program designed to provide education, support and connection through a mobile application. The purpose of this study was to describe use of personas as components of mobile app development and conduct preliminary testing of SUCCESS using personas. METHODS Personas were developed from case studies and portrayed by college students trained as fictitious mentees. Mentors were blinded to use of personas. Eleven mentors completed measures pre and post a 4-week mentoring cycle. Mentors and personas interacted in the app via chat, video calls and sharing of educational materials. Measures included the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS); PROMIS Self-Efficacy; Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS); and a series of focus groups. RESULTS Mentors suggested improvements to resolve instability of video calls, expand educational materials to address psychosocial functioning, and add structure to the mentoring relationship. Some preferences around communication, like groups chats and emoji keyboards, were not able to be addressed. As expected, PCSS scores were stable. DASS score (p = .04), especially depression (p = .03), decreased. PROMIS scores showed a trend towards growth (p = .057), although were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Use of personas allowed technical challenges and program refinements to be addressed before including students with subacute concussion in testing. Although continued development will address enhancement of communication modalities preferred by students, future efficacy testing of SUCCESS is warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) self-efficacy for managing symptoms of the version 1.0 item bank in Korea. METHODS This study consisted of two phases: first, developing the Korean version of the item bank following the translation guidelines; and second, performing a cross-sectional study to evaluate its psychometric properties using the item response theory. This study enrolled 323 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus between July and August 2020. Cronbach's α was used to assess the reliability of this item bank. Confirmatory factor analysis, using diagonally weighted least squares, was used to identify the assumptions of item response theory. Item parameter estimates including discrimination and thresholds were derived using the graded response model of the item response theory to reflect patient-reported outcomes as individualized responses. RESULTS The Korean version of the item bank demonstrated good reliability (Cronbach's α = .98) and its discrimination ranged from 1.82 to 4.93. The thresholds resulted in the establishment of a category response curve for each item. However, no overlap was observed among the category curves. Moreover, the differential item functioning was not significant for age, gender, and income variables. CONCLUSION The graded response model and differential item functioning provided qualitative evidence that demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties of symptom management self-efficacy among patients. This item bank is expected to provide adequate assessments of self-efficacy of symptom management for patients with a chronic disease, which can contribute to nursing research and intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND When a Zuni elder sustains a fall-related injury, the closest tribal skilled nursing facility is 100 miles from the Pueblo and no physical therapy services are available. Thus, fall prevention strategies as a primary intervention to avert injurious falls and preserve aging in place are needed. The objective of the study is to compare the effectiveness of a community health representative (CHR)-delivered, culturally-adapted Otago Exercise Program (OEP) fall prevention program compared to the standard of care education-based fall risk management. METHODS "Standing Strong in Tribal Communities: Assessing Elder Falls Disparity" is mixed-methods research with a randomized controlled trial. The CHRs will be trained to deliver the culturally-adapted OEP trial and offer advantages of speaking "Shiwi" (Zuni tribal language) and understanding Zuni traditions, family structures, and elders' preferences for receiving health information. Focus groups will be conducted to assure all materials are culturally appropriate, and adapted. A physical therapist will train CHRs to screen elders for falls risk and to deliver the OEP to the intervention group and education to the control group. Up to 400 Zuni elders will be screened by the CHRs for falls risk and 200 elders will be enrolled into the study (1:1 random allocation by household). The intervention is 6 months with measurements at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months. The primary outcome is improved strength and balance (timed up and go, sit to stand and 4 stage balance test), secondary outcomes include falls incidence, self-efficacy using Attitudes to Falls-Related Interventions Scale, Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 12 (SF-12v2) and Self-Efficacy for Managing Daily Activities. DISCUSSION Fall prevention for Zuni elders was identified as a tribal priority and this trial is built upon longstanding collaborations between the investigative team, Zuni tribal leaders, and multiple tribal health programs. Delivery by the CHRs make this model more acceptable, and thus, more sustainable long term. This study has the potential to change best practice for elder care in tribal and rural areas with limited access to physical therapist-delivered fall prevention interventions and aligns with tribal goals to avert fall-related injury, reduce healthcare disparity, and preserve elder's independence. Abstract
Background Cancer survivors treated with any dose of radiation to the abdomen, pelvis, spine, or total body irradiation (TBI) are at increased risk for developing colorectal cancer (CRC) compared to the general population. Since earlier detection of CRC is strongly associated with improved survival, the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) Long-Term Follow-Up Guidelines recommend that these high-risk cancer survivors begin CRC screening via a colonoscopy or a multitarget stool DNA test at the age of 30 years or 5 years following the radiation treatment (whichever occurs last). However, only 37% (95% CI 34.1–39.9%) of high-risk survivors adhere to CRC surveillance. The Activating cancer Survivors and their Primary care providers (PCP) to Increase colorectal cancer Screening (ASPIRES) study is designed to assess the efficacy of an intervention to increase the rate of CRC screening among high-risk cancer survivors through interactive, educational text-messages and resources provided to participants, and CRC screening resources provided to their PCPs. Methods ASPIRES is a three-arm, hybrid type II effectiveness and implementation study designed to simultaneously evaluate the efficacy of an intervention and assess the implementation process among participants in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS), a North American longitudinal cohort of childhood cancer survivors. The Control (C) arm participants receive electronic resources, participants in Treatment arm 1 receive electronic resources as well as interactive text messages, and participants in Treatment arm 2 receive electronic educational resources, interactive text messages, and their PCP’s receive faxed materials. We describe our plan to collect quantitative (questionnaires, medical records, study logs, CCSS data) and qualitative (semi-structured interviews) intervention outcome data as well as quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (interviews) data on the implementation process. Discussion There is a critical need to increase the rate of CRC screening among high-risk cancer survivors. This hybrid effectiveness-implementation study will evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of an mHealth intervention consisting of interactive text-messages, electronic tools, and primary care provider resources. Findings from this research will advance CRC prevention efforts by enhancing understanding of the effectiveness of an mHealth intervention and highlighting factors that determine the successful implementation of this intervention within the high-risk cancer survivor population. Abstract
Background Despite progress in developing learning health systems (LHS) and associated metrics of success, a gap remains in identifying measures to guide the implementation and assessment of the impact of an oncology LHS. Our aim was to identify a balanced set of measures to guide a person-centered oncology LHS. Methods A modified Delphi process and clinical value compass framework were used to prioritize measures for tracking LHS performance. A multidisciplinary group of 77 stakeholders, including people with cancer and family members, participated in 3 rounds of online voting followed by 50-minute discussions. Participants rated metrics on perceived importance to the LHS and discussed priorities. Results Voting was completed by 94% of participants and prioritized 22 measures within 8 domains. Patient and caregiver factors included clinical health (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status, survival by cancer type and stage), functional health and quality of life (Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System [PROMIS] Global-10, Distress Thermometer, Modified Caregiver Strain Index), experience of care (advance care planning, collaboRATE, PROMIS Self-Efficacy Scale, access to care, experience of care, end-of-life quality measures), and cost and resource use (avoidance and delay in accessing care and medications, financial hardship, total cost of care). Contextual factors included team well-being (Well-being Index; voluntary staff turnover); learning culture (Improvement Readiness, compliance with Commission on Cancer quality of care measures); scholarly engagement and productivity (institutional commitment and support for research, academic productivity index); and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (screening and follow-up for social determinants of health, inclusivity of staff and patients). Conclusions The person-centered LHS value compass provides a balanced set of measures that oncology practices can use to monitor and evaluate improvement across multiple domains.

Abstract
Abstract: COVID-19 has affected many people all around the world for more than two years now have suffered many long-term consequences which is commonly referred to as long-haulers. Despite multiorgan complaints in long haulers, symptoms related to cognitive functions commonly referred as brain fog are seen in the high risk covid patients with age more than 50, women more than men, obesity, asthma and those who experienced more than five symptoms during the first week of covid illness. Long term isolation has certainly contributed to high level of anxiety and stress calling for an empathetic response to this group of covid patients as there is no specific test to detect long haulers and no specific cognitive rehabilitation techniques available as of today.

Abstract
Informed consent is an important part of the research process; however, some participants either do not read or skim the consent form. When participants do not read or comprehend informed consent, then they may not understand the potential benefits, risks, or details of the study before participating. This study used previous research to develop experimentally manipulated online consent forms utilizing various presentations of the consent form and interactive elements. Participants (n = 576) were randomly exposed to one of six form variations. Results found that the highly interactive condition was significantly better for comprehension than any of the other conditions. The highly interactive condition also performed better for readability, though not significantly. Further research should explore the effects of interactive elements to combat habituation and to engage participants with the parts of the consent form unique to the study.

Abstract
Background Cancer patients who undergo allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are among the most medically fragile patient populations with extreme demands for caregivers. Indeed, with earlier hospital discharges, the demands placed on caregivers continue to intensify. Moreover, an increased number of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantations are being performed worldwide, and this expensive procedure has significant economic consequences. Thus, the health and well-being of family caregivers have attracted widespread attention. Mobile health technology has been shown to deliver flexible, and time- and cost-sparing interventions to support family caregivers across the care trajectory. Objective This protocol aims to leverage technology to deliver a novel caregiver-facing mobile health intervention named Roadmap 2.0. We will evaluate the effectiveness of Roadmap 2.0 in family caregivers of patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods The Roadmap 2.0 intervention will consist of a mobile randomized trial comparing a positive psychology intervention arm with a control arm in family caregiver-patient dyads. The primary outcome will be caregiver health-related quality of life, as assessed by the PROMIS Global Health scale at day 120 post-transplant. Secondary outcomes will include other PROMIS caregiver- and patient-reported outcomes, including companionship, self-efficacy for managing symptoms, self-efficacy for managing daily activities, positive affect and well-being, sleep disturbance, depression, and anxiety. Semistructured qualitative interviews will be conducted among participants at the completion of the study. We will also measure objective physiological markers (eg, sleep, activity, heart rate) through wearable wrist sensors and health care utilization data through electronic health records. Results We plan to enroll 166 family caregiver-patient dyads for the full data analysis. The study has received Institutional Review Board approval as well as Code Review and Information Assurance approval from our health information technology services. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the study has been briefly put on hold. However, recruitment began in August 2020. We have converted all recruitment, enrollment, and onboarding processes to be conducted remotely through video telehealth. Consent will be obtained electronically through the Roadmap 2.0 app. Conclusions This mobile randomized trial will determine if positive psychology-based activities delivered through mobile health technology can improve caregiver health-related quality of life over a 16-week study period. This study will provide additional data on the effects of wearable wrist sensors on caregiver and patient self-report outcomes. Abstract
New models of primary care include patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to promote patient-centered care. PROMs provide information on patient functional status and well-being, can be used to enhance care quality, and are proposed for use in assessing performance. Our objective was to identify a short list of candidate PROMs for use in primary care practice and to serve as a basis for performance measures (PMs). We used qualitative and quantitative methods to identify relevant patient-reported outcome (PRO) domains for use in performance measurement (PRO-PM) and their associated PROMs. We collected data from key informant groups: patients (n = 13; one-on-one and group interviews; concept saturation analysis), clinical thought leaders (n = 9; group discussions; thematic analysis), primary care practices representatives (n = 37; six focus groups; thematic analysis), and primary care payer representatives (n = 10; 12-question survey; frequencies of responses). We merged the key informant group information with findings from environmental literature scans. We conducted a targeted evidence review of measurement properties for candidate PROMs. We used a scoping review and key informant groups to identify PROM evaluation criteria, which were linked to the National Quality Forum measure evaluation criteria. We developed a de novo schema to score candidate PROMs against our criteria. We identified four PRO domains and 10 candidate PROMs: 3 for depressive symptoms, 2 for physical function, 3 for self-efficacy, 2 for ability to participate. Five PROMs met ≥ 70% of the evidence criteria for three PRO domains: PHQ-9 or PROMIS Depression (depression), PF-10 or PROMIS-PF (physical functioning), and PROMIS Self-Efficacy for Managing Treatments and Medications (self-efficacy). The PROMIS Ability to Participate in Social Roles and Activities met 68% of our criteria and might be considered for inclusion. Existing evidence and key informant data identified 5 candidate PROMs to use in primary care. These instruments can be used to develop PRO-PMs.

Abstract
Introduction Deficits in goal-directed behavior are common in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and have been ascribed to apathy. In addition to apathy, individuals' beliefs in their competence (self-efficacy) and capacity to regulate emotions, thoughts, and actions (self-regulation) are critical skills for goal-directed behavior. We investigated these skills and their relationship to motor and non-motor symptoms in individuals with PD. We also examined the neural correlates of these skills using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods We enrolled 35 subjects with mild PD (Hoehn and Yahr stage ≤2.5) and used the new general self-efficacy (NGSES) and self-regulation scales (SRS). We correlated the scores on these scales with measures of cognition, anxiety, depression, apathy, fatigue, quality of life, and disease burden using stepwise regression analyses. We collected resting-state fMRI data in a 3-Tesla scanner and computed the pairwise functional connectivity among nodes of major networks. We correlated the connectivity maps with the NGSES and SRS scores. Results Our PD cohort demonstrated intact NGSES and SRS scores compared with respective population data. These scores showed significant negative correlation with apathy and disease burden. Stronger connectivity in the salience network and decoupling from the default mode network supported self-efficacy and self-regulation. Conclusions Self-efficacy and self-regulation capacity seems preserved, but vulnerable to disease-related factors in individuals with mild PD. Educational programs cultivating this capacity could improve the coping skills of these individuals. Functional connectivity changes in salience and default mode networks may serve as neurobiological markers to demonstrate the effectiveness of such interventions. Self-efficacy and self-regulation skills are critical for goal-directed behavior. These skills and their neural bases were tested in mild Parkinson's disease. These skills are intact and correlate negatively with apathy and disease burden. Functional connectivity among nodes of major neural networks supports these skills. These skills can be cultivated in educational programs for better health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-efficacy is defined an individual’s belief in completing necessary actions to achieve the desired goal. For individuals with hypertension and other chronic conditions, self-efficacy has been an essential factor to predict adherence to treatment behaviors.
AIM To examine self-efficacy for managing chronic conditions in individuals with hypertension.
METHODS A total of 1087 individuals with chronic conditions in two groups (hypertension and non-hypertension groups) were selected in this study. The two groups’ self-efficacy for managing chronic conditions were investigated using the five domains of patient reported outcomes measurement information system self-efficacy for managing chronic conditions measures (PROMIS-SE); daily activities, emotions, medication and treatment, social interactions, and symptoms. Also, the relationships between self-efficacy and other health-related outcomes for the hypertension group were examined using structural equation modeling.
RESULTS Among 1087 participants, 437 reported having hypertension. The hypertension and non-hypertension groups were statistically different in self-efficacy for managing daily activities [F (1, 598) = 5.63, P < 0.05]. Structural equation modeling indicated that for individuals with hypertension, two domains of PROMIS-SE (managing daily activities and emotions) significantly predict global physical health (P < 0.001 and P < 0.01 sequentially), and one domain (managing emotions) significantly predicts mental health (P < 0.001). Hypertension patients’ general quality of life was significantly predicted by global physical health (P < 0.001) and mental health (P < 0.001).
CONCLUSION The hypertension group reported deficits in self-efficacy in managing daily activities as compared to the non-hypertension group. In this hypertension group, self-efficacy functioned as an indirect predictor of general quality of life, mediated by global physical and mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy reflects a person's reading and numeracy abilities applied to understanding health-related information. These skills may influence how patients report symptoms, leading to underestimates or overestimates of symptom severity. No prior studies have examined health literacy measurement bias. OBJECTIVE The purpose of the current study was to determine whether PROMIS (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System) anxiety and depression short forms, administered by interview, capture symptoms equally across health literacy groups. We examined the psychometric properties of PROMIS anxiety and depression short forms using differential item functioning (DIF) analysis by level of health literacy. METHODS The sample analyzed included 888 adults, age 55 to 74 years, in Chicago, IL. Health literacy was measured using the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults. PROMIS short forms assessed anxiety and depression. KEY RESULTS DIF was present in 3 of 8 depression items, and 3 of 7 anxiety items. All items flagged for DIF had lower item-slopes for people with limited health literacy. CONCLUSIONS Items with DIF were less strongly related to anxiety and depression, and thus less precise. Overall, impact of DIF on PROMIS scores was negligible, likely mitigated by interview administration. Although overall test impact of health literacy was minimal, DIF analyses flagged items that were potentially too complex for people with limited health literacy. Design and validation of patient-reported surveys should incorporate respondents with a range of health literacy and methods to identify and reduce measurement bias. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY This study suggests that people with limited health literacy may respond differently to questions about depression and anxiety than people with adequate health literacy. Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the PROMIS Self-Efficacy Measure for Managing Chronic Conditions (PROMIS-SE) domain distributions and examined the factor structure of the PROMIS-SE. METHODS A total of 1087 individuals with chronic conditions participated in this study. PROMIS-SE's item banks and two short forms (eight-item and four-item) measuring five behavioral domains (daily activities(DA), Emotions(EM), medications and treatments(MT), social interactions(SS), and Symptoms(SX)) were examined. PROMIS-SE's T-score ranges and distributions were examined to identify domain metric distributions and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to test a multidimensional model fit to the PROMIS-SE. RESULTS PROMIS-SE domains showed different T-score ranges and distributions for item banks and two short forms across all five domains. While PROMIS-SE EM demonstrated the highest T-scores (least negatively skewed), MT had the lowest T-scores (most negatively skewed) for all three forms. In general, respondents were more likely to achieve highest self-efficacy ratings (very confident) for domains DA, MT, and SS as compared to domains EM and SX. CFA confirmed that a multidimensional model adequately fit all three PROMIS-SE forms. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that self-efficacy T-distributions are not consistent across domains (i.e., managing medications and treatments domain was more negatively skewed difficult than other domains), which is a requirement for making inter-domain comparisons. A multidimensional model could be used to enhance the PROMIS-SE's estimate accuracy and clinical utility.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adults in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction are at risk for substance use relapse and opioid overdose. They often have high rates of cannabis use and comorbid symptoms of pain, depression, and anxiety. Low levels of self-efficacy (confidence that one can self-manage symptoms) are linked to higher symptom burdens and increased substance use. The effects of cannabis use on symptom management among adults with MAT are currently unclear. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study is to examine whether cannabis use moderates the relationships between pain and negative affect (i.e., depression and anxiety) and whether self-efficacy influences these interactions. METHODS A total of 150 adults receiving MAT and attending one of two opioid treatment program clinics were administered a survey containing measures of pain, depression, anxiety, self-efficacy, and cannabis use. RESULTS Cannabis use frequency moderated the relationships between pain and depression as well as pain and anxiety. Specifically, as cannabis use frequency increased, the positive relationships between pain and depression and pain and anxiety grew stronger. However, cannabis use was no longer a significant moderator after controlling for self-efficacy. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that cannabis use strengthens, rather than weakens, the relationships between pain and depression and pain and anxiety. These effects appear to be driven by decreased self-efficacy in cannabis users. It is important to understand how self-efficacy can be improved through symptom self-management interventions and whether self-efficacy can improve distressing symptoms for people in MAT.

Abstract
Falls are dangerous and costly for older adults. The A Matter of Balance/Volunteer Lay Leader (AMOB/VLL) program is an evidence-based fall risk reduction program that could help reduce this burden. This study introduced a door-through-door transportation program to improve program delivery (N = 126). Characteristics predicting completion of all eight AMOB/VLL sessions were identified using logistic regression. Individual growth models were employed to determine the immediate, intermediate, and long-term goal outcomes resulting from receiving an adequate dose of the program (five to eight sessions). Self-restriction of activities due to fear of falling (OR 5.04, 95 % CI 1.86-13.69) and a lower frequency of moderate and vigorous physical activity (OR 1.14, 95 % CI 1.04-1.27) were significantly predictive of receiving a complete dose. Three outcome goals were significant, including (1) immediate-improved self-efficacy of managing medications and treatments, (2) intermediate-reduced activity limitations, and (3) intermediate-reduced physical disability. Self-restriction of activities due to a fear of falling and physical activity levels may be simple and effective screening questions to prevent AMOB/VLL attrition. In our study, those who did receive the program improved on a specific type of self-efficacy and on self-reported physical functioning.

Abstract
PURPOSE The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System® (PROMIS®) was designed to develop, validate, and standardize item banks to measure key domains of physical, mental, and social health in chronic conditions. This paper reports the calibration and validation testing of the PROMIS Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Conditions measures. METHODS PROMIS Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Conditions item banks comprise five domains, Self-Efficacy for Managing: Daily Activities, Symptoms, Medications and Treatments, Emotions, and Social Interactions. Banks were calibrated in 1087 subjects from two data sources: 837 patients with chronic neurologic conditions (epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, Parkinson disease, and stroke) and 250 subjects from an online Internet sample of adults with general chronic conditions. Scores were compared with one legacy scale: Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item scale (SEMCD6) and five PROMIS short forms: Global Health (Physical and Mental), Physical Function, Fatigue, Depression, and Anxiety. RESULTS The sample was 57% female, mean age = 53.8 (SD = 14.7), 76% white, 21% African American, 6% Hispanic, and 76% with greater than high school education. Full-item banks were created for each domain. All measures had good internal consistency and correlated well with SEMCD6 (r = 0.56-0.75). Significant correlations were seen between the Self-Efficacy measures and other PROMIS short forms (r > 0.38). CONCLUSIONS The newly developed PROMIS Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Conditions measures include five domains of self-efficacy that were calibrated across diverse chronic conditions and show good internal consistency and cross-sectional validity.
