Views on Short Stature of Female vs Male Endocrine Pediatric Patients Undergoing Provocative Growth Hormone Testing and Their Parents

OBJECTIVE

Boys outnumber girls in short stature evaluations and growth hormone treatment despite absence of gender differences in short stature prevalence. Family views on short stature influence medical management, but gender-based analysis of these views is lacking. This study explored endocrine patients' and their parents' perceptions of short stature and its impact on quality of life by patient gender.

METHODS

Patients aged 8 to 14 years undergoing provocative growth hormone testing and 1 parent each completed semistructured interviews. Clinical data were extracted by chart review.

RESULTS

Twenty-four patient-parent dyads (6 female patients, 22 mothers; predominantly non-Hispanic White) participated. Six major themes emerged: (1) patients' perceptions of their short stature were similar by gender, (2) physical experiences of short stature were similar by gender, (3) social experiences of short stature were both similar and different by gender, (4) parental perceptions of short stature as a factor limiting their child's functionality were similar by gender, (5) concern about societal stigma related to short stature arose for both genders, and (6) patients' perceptions of parental messaging about the import of their short stature were similar by gender.

CONCLUSION

Our data reveal more similarities than differences between genders in patient perceptions and patient and parent-reported experiences of short stature. Worry about stature-related stigma was noted for patients of both genders. Parental messaging about short stature emerged as an important area to explore further by patient gender. Our findings suggest that clinicians should be wary of making gender or stigma-based assumptions when evaluating children with short stature.

Safety behavior of agricultural workers around face mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND

Agricultural labor-intensive activities have been threatened by COVID-19. Wearing a face mask has been introduced as one of the personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce COVID-19 risk.

OBJECTIVE

The present study aimed to investigate the safety behavior of urban green space workers around wearing a face mask in the time of COVID-19 before vaccination.

METHODS

The personal and safety backgrounds of 61 male participants were collected using a designed questionnaire. The nonparametric correlation coefficients of Spearman and logistic regressions were used to investigate the relationships among variables.

RESULTS

Above one-third of workers (37.7%) got COVID-19 in the past year. Although all of the participants were aware of wearing a face mask is a protocol against COVID-19, only about half of them (50.8%) completely wear face masks at work. Non-smoking participants were 5.5 times more likely to influence their personal preference on wearing the mask.

CONCLUSION

Safety attitude may be a key variable in relation to the factors that influence the wearing face mask. The causes of face mask-wearing during a pandemic such as COVID-19 as well as safety attitudes may be behind the factors studied in this study. Although some significant linkages were found, they were not enough to conclude a comprehensive action program. This concern is still open to discovering factors that influence wearing face mask.

Identification and characterization of factors associated with short stature and pre-shortness in Chinese preschool-aged children

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to identify and characterize potential factors, both individually and jointly as a nomogram, associated with short stature and pre-shortness in Chinese preschool-aged children.

METHODS

Total of 9501 children aged 3-6 years were recruited from 30 kindergartens in Beijing and Tangshan from September to December 2020 using a stratified random sampling method. Effect-size estimates are expressed as odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI.

RESULTS

The prevalence of short stature and pre-shortness in preschool-aged children was 3.9% (n = 375) and 13.1% (n = 1616), respectively. Factors simultaneously associated with the significant risk for short stature, pre-shortness and both included BMI, paternal height, maternal height, birth weight, birth height, latter birth order (≥2) and less parental patience to children. Besides, breastfeeding duration (≥12 months) was exclusively associated with pre-shortness (OR, 95% CI, P: 1.16, 1.01 to 1.33, 0.037), and childhood obesity with both short stature (3.45, 2.62 to 4.54, <0.001) and short stature/pre-shortness (1.37, 1.15 to 1.64, <0.001). Modeling of significant factors in nomograms had descent prediction accuracies, with the C-index being 77.0, 70.1 and 71.2% for short stature, pre-shortness and both, respectively (all P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate the joint contribution of inherited characteristics, nutrition status from the uterus to childhood, and family psychological environment to short stature and pre-shortness in Chinese preschool-aged children. Further validation in other independent groups is warranted.
