Quality assessment of Panax notoginseng flowers based on fingerprinting using high-performance liquid chromatography–PDA

GC/MS-Based Analysis of Fatty Acids and Amino Acids in H460 Cells Treated with Short-Chain and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids: A Highly Sensitive Approach

The important metabolic characteristics of cancer cells include increased fat production and changes in amino acid metabolism. Based on the category of tumor, tumor cells are capable of synthesizing as much as 95% of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids through de novo synthesis, even in the presence of sufficient dietary lipid intake. This fat transformation starts early when cell cancerization and further spread along with the tumor cells grow more malignant. In addition, local catabolism of tryptophan, a common feature, can weaken anti-tumor immunity in primary tumor lesions and TDLN. Arginine catabolism is likewise related with the inhibition of anti-tumor immunity. Due to the crucial role of amino acids in tumor growth, increasing tryptophan along with arginine catabolism will promote tumor growth. However, immune cells also require amino acids to expand and distinguish into effector cells that can kill tumor cells. Therefore, it is necessary to have a deeper understanding of the metabolism of amino acids and fatty acids within cells. In this study, we established a method for the simultaneous analysis of 64 metabolites consisting of fatty acids and amino acids, covering biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, and fatty acid biosynthesis using the Agilent GC-MS system. We selected linoleic acid, linolenic acid, sodium acetate, and sodium butyrate to treat H460 cells to validate the current method. The differential metabolites observed in the four fatty acid groups in comparison with the control group indicate the metabolic effects of various fatty acids on H460 cells. These differential metabolites could potentially become biomarkers for the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

Application of Identification and Evaluation Techniques for Ethnobotanical Medicinal Plant of Genus Panax: A Review

Genus Panax, as worldwide medicinal plants, has a medical history for thousands of years. Most of the entire genus are traditional ethnobotanical medicine in China, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, which have given rise to international attention and use. This paper reviewed more than 210 articles and related books on the research of Panax medicinal plants and their Chinese patent medicines published in the last 30 years. The purpose was to review and summarize the species classification, geographical distribution, and ethnic minorities medicinal records of the genus Panax, and further to review the analytical tools and data analysis methods for the authentication and quality assessment of Panax medicinal materials and Chinese patent medicines. Five main technologies applied in the identification and evaluation of Panax have been introduced and summarized. Chromatography was the most widely used one. Further research and development of molecular identification technology had the potential to become a mainstream identification technology. In addition, some novel, controversial, and worthy methods including electronic noses, electronic eyes, and DNA barcoding were also introduced. At the same time, more than 80% of the researches were carried out by a combination of chemometric pattern-recognition technologies and multi-analysis technologies. All the technologies and methods applied can provide strong support and guarantee for the identification and evaluation of genus Panax, and also conduce to excellent reference value for the development and in-depth research of new technologies in Panax.

Analytical methods and biological activities of Panax notoginseng saponins: Recent trends

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen, also called Sanqi, is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine, which has long history used as herbal medicines. It is currently an important medicinal material in China, holding the first place in the sale volume of the whole patent medicines market in China, and the market size of the single species has exceeded 10 billion yuan. In addition, P. notoginseng is an important constituent part of many famous Chinese patent medicines, such as Compound Danshen Dripping Pills and Yunnan Baiyao. P. notoginseng saponins (PNSs), which are the major active components of P. notoginseng, are a kind of chemical mixture containing different dammarane-type saponins. Many studies show that PNSs have been extensively used in medical research or applications, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, acute lung injury, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, various PNS preparations, such as injections and capsules, have been made commercially available and are widely applied in clinical practice.

AIM OF THE REVIEW

Since the safety and efficacy of compounds are related to their qualitative and quantitative analyses, this review briefly summarizes the analytic approaches for PNSs and their biological effects developed in the last decade.

METHODOLOGY

This review conducted a systematic search in electronic databases, such as Pubmed, Google Scholar, SciFinder, ISI Web of Science, and CNKI, since 2009. The information provided in this review is based on peer-reviewed papers and patents in either English or Chinese.

RESULTS

At present, the chromatographic technique remains the most extensively used approach for the identification or quantitation of PNSs, coupled with different detectors, among which the difference mainly lies in their sensitivity and specificity for analyzing various compounds. It is well-known that PNSs have traditionally strong activity on cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, intracerebral hemorrhage, or brain injury. The recent studies showed that PNSs also responded to osteoporosis, cancers, diabetes, and drug toxicity. However, some other studies also showed that some PNSs injections and special PNS components might lead to some biological toxicity under certain dosages.

CONCLUSION

This review may be used as a basis for further research in the field of quantitative and qualitative analyses, and is expected to provide updated and valuable insights into the potential medicinal applications of PNSs.
