Graphene oxide supported dicationic ionic liquid: an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of 1-carbamatoalkyl-2-naphthols

Recent Advances in Imidazolium-Based Dicationic Ionic Liquids as Organocatalysts: A Mini-Review

Imidazolium-based dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) are gaining considerable space in the field of organocatalysis mainly due to the opportunities in offering new possible applicable structural variations. In addition to the well-known variables which made the ionic liquids (ILs) famous as the type of cation and anion used, the nature of the molecular spacer moiety turns out a further possibility to improve some physicochemical properties, for example, solubility, acidity, electrochemical behavior, and so on. For this reason, this class of ionic liquids has been considered as possible competitors to their corresponding monocationic salts in replacing common catalysts in organic synthesis, particularly in cases in which their bidentate nature could positively affect the catalytic activity. This mini-review is intended to highlight the progress carried out in the last six years in the field of organocatalysis, including DILs as such and as hybrids with polymers, nanomaterials, and composites.

Microextraction by packed sorbent of selected pesticides in coffee samples employing ionic liquids supported on graphene nanosheets as extraction phase

This paper describes the synthesis, characterization, and use of ionic liquids supported on silica, functionalized with graphene oxide through covalent bonding (ILz/Si@GO), as sorbents for microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS). Seven selected pesticides (diazinon, heptachlor, aldrin, endrin, dieldrin, endosulfan, and methoxychlor), used for the prevention of pests in coffee crops, and endosulfan sulfate-an endosulfan metabolite-were selected for this study as model compounds for evaluating the sorbent performance of the synthesized materials in the MEPS device. The cycles of each of the stages were previously optimized through univariate experiments to carry out the extraction. The ILz/Si@GO phase was compared to other sorbents used in MEPS (GO, DVB-MMA, C₄/SiO₂, C₈/SiO₂, ILz/SiO₂, and bare silica) and also with graphene functionalized through other methodologies, where ILz/Si@GO showed the best results. The material was characterized using a range of techniques. The selectivity of the sorbent material and its adsorption capacity were evaluated by gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. The precision and accuracy of the method showed a relative standard deviation lower than 10% and recoveries from 35 to 97%. Finally, the proposed method was employed for the determination of pesticide residues in coffee samples.

When graphene meets ionic liquids: a good match for the design of functional materials

Graphene is an attractive material that is characterized by its exceptional properties (i.e. electrical, mechanical, thermal, optical, etc.), which have pushed researchers to attach high interest to its production and functionalization processes to meet applications in different fields (electronics, electromagnetics, composites, sensors, energy storage, etc.). The synthesis (bottom-up) of graphene remains long and laborious, at the same time expensive, and it is limited to the development of this material in low yield. Hence, the use of graphite as a starting material (top-down through exfoliation or oxidation) seems a promising and easy technique for producing a large quantity of graphene or graphene oxide (GO). On the one hand, GO has been extensively studied due to its ease of synthesis, processing and chemical post-functionalization. One the other hand, "pristine" graphene sheets, obtained through exfoliation, are limited in processability but present enhanced electronic properties. Both types of materials have been of great interest to design functional nanomaterials. Ionic liquids (ILs) are task-specific solvents that exhibit tunable physico-chemical properties. ILs have many advantages as compared with conventional solvents, such as high thermal and chemical stability, low volatility, excellent conductivity and inherent polarity. In the last decade, ILs have been widely employed for the preparation and stabilization of various nanomaterials. In particular, the combination of ILs and graphene, including GO and pristine graphene sheets, has been of growing interest for the preparation, processing and functionalization of hybrid nanomaterials. Understanding the structure and properties of the graphene/IL interface has been of considerable interest for a large panel of applications ranging from tribology to energy storage.

Synthesis of Naphthoxazinones in a One-Pot Two-Step Manner by the Application of Propylphosphonic Anhydride (T3P®)

A sequential one-pot two-step protocol has been elaborated for the synthesis of naphthoxazinones from 2-naphthol, methyl carbamate, and aromatic aldehydes. First, a three-component reaction was optimized with the dehydrating additive propylphosphonic anhydride (T3P®), resulting in 1-carbamatoalkyl 2-naphthols in good to excellent yields. Following the successful multicomponent approach, intramolecular acylation was performed at high temperature, again with the contribution of T3P®, resulting in naphthoxazinone derivatives in moderate yields. These two steps were optimized together in one-pot as well, and the sequential rise in the requisite temperature eventuated the optimal procedure for the multistep cascade.
