Research impact and productivity of Southeast Asian countries in language and linguistics

Mapping the research trends of third language acquisition: A bibliometric analysis based on Scopus

L3 acquisition is gaining prominence in the academic community. The cardinal aim of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research on L3 acquisition. 425 documents from the Scopus database were analyzed with Bibliometrix. To gain a general and systematic overview of research on L3 acquisition, we grounded our study on three main levels of bibliometric analysis: performance analysis, collaboration analysis, and thematic map. By doing so, we identified the most influential sources, authors, affiliations, countries, and documents, the scientific network among different constituents, as well as the evolution of research trends. The results suggest that L3 acquisition has experienced three periods: initial phase (1984-2008), development phase (2009-2014), and burst phase (2015-2022). The results also indicate that: (1) The International Journal of Multilingualism is the most steady source contributing to this field. (2) Relevant contributors for each period are recognized, including established and emerging researchers. (3) European countries such as Spain, United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, and Poland are at the forefront of publication. (4) Collaboration increases over time but is becoming increasingly oriented in European and Anglophone countries. (5) The research hotspots have shifted throughout time, encompass a broad range of fields, and continue to grow. The study results provide insights into the evolving trends of L3 acquisition studies and data to assist researchers in identifying research gaps.

A percentile rank score of group productivity: an evaluation of publication productivity for researchers from various fields

The difficulty in evaluating the research performance of groups is attributable to the following two factors: 1) difference of population size or discipline of group members and 2) skewed distribution of the research performance of individuals. This study attempts to overcome this difficulty, focusing on the research performance based on publication productivity. We employ the normalized index for the number of papers, in which publication efficiency was considered and disciplinary variation in the publication intensity was corrected by the disciplinary averages, to calculate a new percentile rank score. The score was developed on the basis of the principle that a person who is rare is valuable. The score was also tested with publication data for faculty members of 17 Japanese universities. The employment of the normalized index increased the score of universities with relatively few faculty members working in the disciplines of high productivity, resulting in more plausible university rankings. The rankings show a high correlation with those for a previously established percentile rank score, which was developed for citation analysis, and they are consistent with the judgment by evaluators of several universities under study. The advantage of the new score over the previous one is that it has no room for arbitrariness in determining the scheme of rank classification and the weights given to each rank class.

A bibliometric study of the applied linguistics research output of Saudi institutions in the Web of Science for the decade 2011-2020

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse the research contributions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the field of applied linguistics (AL) indexed in the Web of Science core collection for the period between 2011 and 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

The author searched key terms in the Social Science Citation Index and Science Citation Index Expanded categories that publish documents in AL. The author compiled the data, classified these documents according to their research focus and investigated different metrics such as keywords analysis, citation analysis, overseas collaboration and productivity over authors, institutions and sources by using VOSviewer and Excel sheet.

Findings

Results found that publications in Saudi Arabia have tremendously increased around three times in the years 2016–2020 than before. As unexpected, highly cited researchers, sources and institutions for the social science and arts and humanities disciplines were higher than the scientific disciplines that investigated linguistic issues such as neurology, audiology and computer science. The area of language teaching and learning was the most researched area in which the highly cited author, journals and keywords analysis metrics occurred within its scope. The highly cited articles were those that collaborated with the world contributing authors and acted as corresponding authors.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the body of literature of AL which shares other categories that investigated language as a central issue. The study provides a fine-grained picture about the research productivity of AL in scientific and social science categories in Saudi Arabia.
