Analysis of Factors Historically Affecting Innovation in Hospital Building Design

PURPOSE

This article aims to complement the historical literature on the evolution of hospital buildings via a holistic analysis of the contextual factors triggering hospital design innovation over the past 100 years.

BACKGROUND

Innovation in hospital building design should be considered as a complex ecosystem with a heterogeneous set of actors.

METHODS

A novel hybrid research design to the Mixed Grounded Theory methodology, with Charmaz's constructivist paradigm, was developed to explore, construct, and interpret concepts and the interconnections between them.

RESULTS

Six hundred seventeen interconnections between 146 factors, classified across 14 categories, were developed to explain the individual and combined impacts of all components of the design innovation ecosystem.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides hospital building designers, researchers, policy makers, and stakeholders with a systemic understanding of the innovation ecosystem and their potential role in this system. This knowledge suggests the need for interdisciplinary education to address complex and quickly evolving real-world building design problems.

Intellectual Capital: A System Thinking Analysis in Revamping the Exchanging Information in University-Industry Research Collaboration

University-industry research collaboration (UIRC) is a major source for research, innovations and sustainable economic growth. Despite the extensive evidence on the importance of such collaboration in developed and developing countries, literature related to the strengthening of this collaboration, along with its innovation performance, is still scarce. Scholars believe that the impact of exchanging information has a vigorous influence on researcher’s innovative activities as well as research and innovations. Moreover, to flatten the flow of exchanging information between researchers, it is mandatory to refurbish human capital in conjunction with intellectual capital, along with their reinforcing factors i.e., communication and networking, respectively. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of human capital and intellectual capital along with their corresponding reinforcing factors on exchanging information using the system thinking method. Evidence from UIRC in Malaysia provides empirical corroboration that intellectual capital along with its reinforcing factors has a significant influence on exchanging information. Thus, the findings of this research suggest that intensifying the capabilities of intellectual capital with a reinforcing effect can sustain the circulation of exchanging information.

The Optimal Strategy of Enterprise Key Resource Allocation and Utilization in Collaborative Innovation Project Based on Evolutionary Game

The rational allocation and utilization of key corporate resources is the key to the success of collaborative innovation projects. Finding an optimal strategy for the allocation and utilization of key resources is of great significance for promoting the smooth progress of cooperative both innovation parties and increasing project returns. Therefore, from the perspective of the repeated games of the project participants, this article studies the optimal allocation and utilization of key resources of the enterprise in collaborative innovation projects. In this study, nine scenarios and eighteen strategic combinations of resources allocation and utilization by collaborative innovation partners are explored. Explicit expressions for the components of sixteen equilibrium points in terms of parameters are derived. Among these equilibrium points, four stable solutions are determined. These stable solutions correspond to the optimal strategies for enterprises allocating key resources and A&R parties to use these resources in different scenarios, and these strategies enable partners to maximize their interests. On this basis, some suggestions are put forward to promote cooperation and improve project performance.
