Investigation of the effect of π–π stacking interaction on the properties of –CONH2 functional group of benzamide

Managing Pb-Related Imperfections via Rationally Designed Aniline Derivative with Bilateral Cyano and Acetyl Groups as Lewis Base for High-Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells Exceeding 24

Pb-related imperfections (surface or halide vacancy induced uncoordinated Pb2+, Pb-I antisite, and Pb2+ vacancy defects) of the ionic crystal perovskite film seriously restrict the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, an aniline derivative N-(4-cyanophenyl)acetamide (CAL) is rationally designed, incorporating bilateral functional sites of cyano and acetyl groups, acting as Lewis base molecule for managing the Pb-related imperfections in perovskite surface through post-treatment. Theoretical calculation and experimental verification together proved the reduced defect density, improved crystallinity, and inhibited ion migration in the CAL-modified perovskite. Precisely, cyano as a side group and acetyl as another side group can both coordinate with Pb2+ for its low electrostatic potential energy. Further, the aniline core and the π-π conjugate structure in the benzene ring of the ligand tend to form a dimer to improve the mobility for carrier transportation and collection. The strategy demonstrates a champion PCE of 24.35% for the air-processed PSCs with over 1200 hours of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) stability. This study presents a comprehensive approach to overcoming the current Pb-related imperfections induced limitations in PSCs, paving the way for their integration into mainstream solar technologies.

The π–π stacking of tanshinone I and isotanshinone I with phenylalanine: The effects of isomerization, complexation and environment

The misfolding and aggregation of amyloid-[Formula: see text] (A[Formula: see text] peptides into amyloid fibrils is regarded as one of the possible causes of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Aromatic interactions (i.e. [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] interactions) between tanshinone drugs extracted from Chinese herb Salvia Miltiorrhiza (SM) and aromatic residues of A[Formula: see text] peptides have been shown to prevent further growth of amyloid aggregates. In this work, the effects of isomerization, complexation and polarity of environment on the strength of [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] stacking interactions of tanshinone I (TS1) and isotanshinone I (IS1), as the two diterpenoid quinones in the SM herb, and their complexes with Mg[Formula: see text] cation, IS1-Mg[Formula: see text] and TS1-Mg[Formula: see text], with phenylalanine (PHE), as an aromatic amino acid in A[Formula: see text] structure have been investigated using the quantum mechanical calculations in the gas-phase, ether, acetone, DMSO, and water solvent. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), which are used to predict the nucleophile active sites, electron densities calculated at the bond critical points ([Formula: see text] and ring critical points ([Formula: see text] by the atoms in molecules (AIM) method and the donor–acceptor interaction energies ([Formula: see text] calculated using the natural bond orbital (NBO) method were used to investigate the interplay between [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] stacking and complexation. The results show that the IS1/TS1-Mg[Formula: see text] compounds have a more protective role compared to TS1/IS1-Mg[Formula: see text] compounds due to the stronger interaction with PHE of A[Formula: see text] in antiaggregation for further development of A[Formula: see text] inhibitors to prevent and disaggregate amyloid formation. Complexation with Mg[Formula: see text] increases the interaction diterpenoid drugs with PHE and makes notable changes in structural and electronic properties of diterpenoids. Also, the interactions between diterpenoid and PHE in less polar environment are more than other environments. Low-polarity environments have the best mimics of the A[Formula: see text] binding site.

Enhancing the Reduction Potential of Quinones via Complex Formation

Quantum calculations are used to study the manner in which quinones interact with proton-donating molecules. For neutral donors, a stacked geometry is favored over a H-bond structure. The former is stabilized by charge transfers from the N or O lone pairs to the quinone's π* orbitals. Following the addition of an electron to the quinone, the radical anion forms strong H-bonded complexes with the various donors. The presence of the donor enhances the electron affinity of the quinone. This enhancement is on the order of 15 kcal/mol for neutral donors, but up to as much as 85 kcal/mol for a cationic donor. The increase in electron affinity is larger for electron-rich quinones than for their electron-deficient counterparts, containing halogen substituents. Similar trends are in evidence when the systems are immersed in aqueous solvent.
