Abstract
The application of small-pore chabazite-type SSZ-13 zeolites, key materials for the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in automotive exhausts and the selective conversion of methane, is limited by the use of expensive N,N,N-trimethyl-1-ammonium adamantine hydroxide (TMAdaOH) as an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) during hydrothermal synthesis. Here, we report an economical and sustainable route for SSZ-13 synthesis by recycling and reusing the OSDA-containing waste liquids. The TMAdaOH concentration in waste liquids, determined by a bromocresol green colorimetric method, was found to be a key factor for SSZ-13 crystallization. The SSZ-13 zeolite synthesized under optimized conditions demonstrates similar physicochemical properties (surface area, porosity, crystallinity, Si/Al ratio, etc.) as that of the conventional synthetic approach. We then used the waste liquid-derived SSZ-13 as the parent zeolite to synthesize Cu ion-exchanged SSZ-13 (i.e., Cu-SSZ-13) for ammonia-mediated selective catalytic reduction of NOx (NH3-SCR) and observed a higher activity as well as better hydrothermal stability than Cu-SSZ-13 by conventional synthesis. In situ infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy investigations revealed that the superior NH3-SCR performance of waste liquid-derived Cu-SSZ-13 results from a higher density of Cu2+ sites coordinated to paired Al centers on the zeolite framework. The technoeconomic analysis highlights that recycling OSDA-containing waste liquids could reduce the raw material cost of SSZ-13 synthesis by 49.4% (mainly because of the higher utilization efficiency of TMAdaOH) and, meanwhile, the discharging of wastewater by 45.7%.

Abstract
This work prepared an ISAPO-34/SAPO-18 intergrown zeolite using phosphate organoamine as the structure guiding agent. Physical-chemical characterizations by XRD, SEM, TG, and BET showed that the SAPO-34/SAPO-18 presents a cross-stacked cubic block-like microscopic morphology, with characteristic diffusive diffraction peaks at 2θ = 16–18° and 30–33° and a specific surface area of 557 m2 g−1. The series of copper-based catalysts prepared from SAPO-34/SAPO-18 showed a shift of the active temperature window to a lower temperature with increasing copper content. Moreover, the Brønsted acid site decreased significantly due to copper ion exchange and zeolite structure framework damage. Among them, the 1.2 wt% sample showed the widest active temperature window, with a T90 range of 175–435°C. After low-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment, the zeolite structure was eroded and the catalyst activity deteriorated significantly.

Abstract
Brønsted acid zeolites catalyze alkene oligomerization to heavier hydrocarbon products of varied size and branching. Propene dimerization rates decrease monotonically with increasing crystallite size for MFI zeolites synthesized with fixed H+-site density, revealing the strong influence of intrazeolite transport limitations on measured rates, which has gone unrecognized in previous studies. Transient changes in dimerization rates upon step-changes in reactant pressure (150-470 kPa C3H6) or temperature (483-523 K) reveal that intrazeolite diffusion limitations become more severe under reaction conditions that favor the formation of heavier products. Together with effectiveness factor formalisms, these data reveal that product and reactant diffusion, and consequently oligomerization rates and selectivity, are governed by the composition of hydrocarbon products that accumulate within zeolitic micropores during alkene oligomerization. This occluded organic phase strongly influences rates and selectivities of alkene oligomerization on medium-pore zeolites (MFI, MEL, TON). Recognizing the coupled influences of kinetic factors and intrazeolite transport limitations imposed by occluded reaction products provides opportunities to competently tailor rates and selectivity in alkene oligomerization and other molecular chain-growth reactions through judicious selection of zeolite topology and reaction conditions.

Abstract
NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3 -TPD) is frequently used for probing the nature of the active sites in CuSSZ-13 zeolite for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx . Herein, we propose an interpretation of NH3 -TPD results, which takes into account the temperature-induced dynamics of NH3 interaction with the active centers. It is based on a comprehensive DFT/GGA+D and first-principles thermodynamic (FPT) modeling of NH3 adsorption on single Cu2+ , Cu+ , [CuOH]+ centers, dimeric [Cu-O-Cu]2+ , [Cu-O2 2- -Cu]2 species, segregated CuO nanocrystals and Brønsted acid sites (BAS). Theoretical TPD profiles are compared with the experimental data measured for samples of various Si/Al ratios and distribution of Al within the zeolite framework. Copper reduction, its relocation, followed by the intrazeolite olation/oxolation processes, which are concomitant with NH3 desorption, were revealed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and IR. DFT/FPT results show that the peaks in the desorption profiles cannot be assigned univocally to the particular Cu and BAS centers, since the observed low-, medium- and high-temperature desorption bands have contributions coming from several species, which dynamically change their speciation and redox states during NH3 -TPD experiment. Thus, a rigorous interpretation of the NH3 -TPD profiles of CuSSZ-13 in terms of the strength and concentration of the active centers of a particular type is problematic. Nonetheless, useful connections for molecular interpretation of TPD profiles can be established between the individual component peaks and the corresponding ensembles of the adsorption centers.

Abstract
The mobility of the copper cations acting as active sites for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia in Cu-CHA catalysts varies with temperature and feed composition. Herein, the migration of [Cu(NH3)2]+ complexes between two adjacent cavities of the chabazite structure, including other reactant molecules (NO, O2, H2O, and NH3), in the initial and final cavities is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations combined with enhanced sampling techniques to describe hopping events from one cage to the other. We find that such diffusion is only significantly hindered by the presence of excess NH3 or NO in the initial cavity, since both reactants form with [Cu(NH3)2]+ stable intermediates which are too bulky to cross the 8-ring windows connecting the cavities. The presence of O2 modifies strongly the interaction of NO with Cu+. At low temperatures, we observe NO detachment from Cu+ and increased mobility of the [Cu(NH3)2]+ complex, while at high temperatures, NO reacts spontaneously with O2 to form NO2. The present simulations give evidence for recent experimental observations, namely, an NH3 inhibition effect on the SCR reaction at low temperatures, and transport limitations of NO and NH3 at high temperatures. Our first principle simulations mimicking operating conditions support the existence of two different reaction mechanisms operating at low and high temperatures, the former involving dimeric Cu(NH3)2-O2-Cu(NH3)2 species and the latter occurring by direct NO oxidation to NO2 in one single cavity.

Abstract
ConspectusCopper-exchanged chabazite (Cu-CHA) zeolites are catalysts used in diesel emissions control for the abatement of nitrogen oxides (NOx) via selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions with ammonia as the reductant. The discovery of these materials in the early 2010s enabled a step-change improvement in diesel emissions aftertreatment technology. Key advantages of Cu-CHA zeolites over prior materials include their effectiveness at the lower temperatures characteristic of diesel exhaust, their durability under high-temperature hydrothermal conditions, and their resistance to poisoning from residual hydrocarbons present in exhaust. Fundamental catalysis research has since uncovered mechanistic and kinetic features that underpin the ability of Cu-CHA to selectively reduce NOx under strongly oxidizing conditions and to achieve improved NOx conversion relative to other zeolite frameworks, particularly at low exhaust temperatures and with ammonia instead of other reductants. One critical mechanistic feature is the NH3 solvation of exchanged Cu ions at low temperatures (<523 K) to create cationic Cu-amine coordination complexes that are ionically tethered to anionic Al framework sites. This ionic tethering confers regulated mobility that facilitates interconversion between mononuclear and binuclear Cu complexes, which is necessary to propagate SCR through a Cu2+/Cu+ redox cycle during catalytic turnover. This dynamic catalytic mechanism, wherein single and dual metal sites interconvert to mediate different half-reactions of the redox cycle, combines features canonically associated with homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction mechanisms. In this Account, we describe how a unified experimental and theoretical interrogation of Cu-CHA catalysts in operando provided quantitative evidence of regulated Cu ion mobility and its role in the SCR mechanism. This approach relied on new synthetic methods to prepare model Cu-CHA zeolites with varied active-site structures and spatial densities in order to verify that the kinetic and mechanistic models describe the catalytic behavior of a family of materials of diverse composition, and on new computational approaches to capture the active-site structure and dynamics under conditions representative of catalysis. Ex situ interrogation revealed that the Cu structure depends on the conditions for the zeolite synthesis, which influence the framework Al substitution patterns, and that statistical and electronic structure models can enumerate Cu site populations for a known Al distribution. This recognition unifies seemingly disparate spectroscopic observations and inferences regarding Cu ion structure and responses to different external conditions. SCR rates depend strongly on the Cu spatial density and zeolite composition in kinetic regimes where Cu+ oxidation with O2 becomes rate-limiting, as occurs at lower temperatures and under fuel-rich conditions. Transient experiments, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and statistical models relate these sensitivities to the mobility constraints imposed by the CHA framework on NH3-solvated Cu ions, which regulate the pore volume accessible to these ions and their ability to pair and complete the catalytic cycle. This highlights the key characteristics of the CHA framework that enable superior performance under low-temperature SCR reaction conditions. This work illustrates the power of precise control over a catalytic material, simultaneous kinetic and spectroscopic interrogation over a wide range of reaction conditions, and computational strategies tailored to capture those reaction conditions to reveal in microscopic detail the mechanistic features of a complex and widely practiced catalysis. In doing so, it highlights the key role of ion mobility in catalysis and thus potentially a more general phenomenon of reactant solvation and active site mobilization in reactions catalyzed by exchanged metal ions in zeolites.

Abstract
Reduction of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel engine exhausts is one of the key challenges in environmental protection, and can be achieved by NH3-assisted selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) using copper-exchanged chabazite zeolites (i.e. Cu-CHA, including Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-34) as catalysts. Understanding the redox chemistry of Cu-CHA in NH3-SCR catalysis is crucial for further improving the NOx reduction efficiency. Here, a series of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with different Cu ion exchange levels were prepared, thoroughly characterized by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption using NH3 as a probe molecule, etc., and tested in NH3-SCR reactions under steady-state conditions. In situ studies by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), supplemented with density-functional theory calculations, provided solid evidence for the formation of ammonium ion (NH4+) intermediates resulting from the reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+ by co-adsorbed NH3 and NO molecules on Cu-SSZ-13. Catalytic relevance of the NH4+ intermediates, as demonstrated by an increase of NO conversion over Cu-SSZ-13 pre-treated in NH3/NO atmosphere, can be attributed to the formation of closely coupled Cu+/NH4+ pairs promoting the Cu+ re-oxidation and, consequently, the overall NH3-SCR process. This study thus paves a new route for improving the NH3-SCR efficiency over Cu-CHA zeolite catalyst.

Abstract
We combine experiment and theory to investigate the cooperation or competition between organic and inorganic structure-directing agents (SDAs) for occupancy within microporous voids of chabazite (CHA) zeolites and to rationalize the effects of SDA siting on biasing the framework Al arrangement (Al-O(-Si-O)x-Al, x = 1-3) among CHA zeolites of essentially fixed composition (Si/Al = 15). CHA zeolites crystallized using mixtures of TMAda+ and Na+ contain one TMAda+ occluded per cage and Na+ co-occluded in an amount linearly proportional to the number of 6-MR paired Al sites, quantified by Co2+ titration. In contrast, CHA zeolites crystallized using mixtures of TMAda+ and K+ provide evidence that three K+ cations, on average, displace one TMAda+ from occupying a cage and contain predominantly 6-MR isolated Al sites. Moreover, CHA crystallizes from synthesis media containing more than 10-fold higher inorganic-to-organic ratios with K+ than with Na+ before competing crystalline phases form, providing a route to decrease the amount of organic SDA needed to crystallize high-silica CHA. Density functional theory calculations show that differences in the ionic radii of Na+ and K+ determine their preferences for siting in different CHA rings, which influences their energy to co-occlude with TMAda+ and stabilize different Al configurations. Monte Carlo models confirm that energy differences resulting from Na+ or K+ co-occlusion promote the formation of 6-MR and 8-MR paired Al arrangements, respectively. These results highlight opportunities to exploit using mixtures of organic and inorganic SDAs during zeolite crystallization in order to more efficiently use organic SDAs and influence framework Al arrangements.

Recent Progress in Atomic-Level Understanding of Cu/SSZ-13 Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalysts. Catalysts 2018. Abstract
Cu/SSZ-13 Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalysts have been extensively studied for the past five-plus years. New and exciting fundamental and applied science has appeared in the literature quite frequently over this time. In this short review, a few topics specifically focused on a molecular-level understanding of this catalyst are summarized: (1) The nature of the active sites and, in particular, their transformations under varying reaction conditions that include dehydration, the presence of the various SCR reactants and hydrothermal aging; (2) Discussions of standard and fast SCR reaction mechanisms. Considerable progress has been made, especially in the last couple of years, on standard SCR mechanisms. In contrast, mechanisms for fast SCR are much less understood. Possible reaction paths are hypothesized for this latter case to stimulate further investigations; (3) Discussions of rational catalyst design based on new knowledge obtained regarding catalyst stability, overall catalytic performance and mechanistic catalytic chemistry.

Abstract
A design is presented for a versatile transmission infrared cell that can interface with an external vacuum manifold to undergo in situ gas treatments and receive controlled doses of various adsorbates and probe molecules, allowing characterization of heterogeneous catalyst surfaces in order to identify and quantify active sites and adsorbed surface species. Critical design characteristics include customized temperature control for operation between cryogenic and elevated temperatures (100-1000 K) and modified Cajon fittings for operation over a wide pressure range (10-2-103 Torr) that eliminates the complications introduced when using sealants or flanges to secure cell windows. The customized, hand-tightened Cajon fittings simplify operation of the cell compared to previously reported designs, because they allow for rapid cell assembly and disassembly and, in turn, replacement of catalyst samples. In order to validate the performance of the cell, transmission infrared spectroscopic experiments are reported to characterize the Brønsted and Lewis acid sites present in H-beta and H-mordenite zeolites using cryogenic adsorption of CO (<150 K).
