Efficient radon removal using fluorine-functionalized natural zeolite

Radon (Rn) can easily leak into the environment through groundwater owing to its high water solubility. Therefore, studying the chemical factors influencing the content and removal of Rn from groundwater is crucial for the evaluation and mitigation of its radiological risks to public health. In this study, we conducted a redundancy analysis (RDA) of Rn in groundwater and performed batch sorption experiments for efficient Rn removal from the groundwater collected from Daejeon using natural zeolite (NZ) and fluorine-functionalized natural zeolite (FFNZ) sorbents. The redundancy analysis revealed a positive correlation between the concentrations of Rn and fluorine (F) in groundwater, indicating that F can support the long-term retention of Rn in groundwater. NZ and FFNZ achieved ~40% and ~70% removal of Rn, respectively, following 24 h of treatment, indicating a significant impact of F (in FFNZ) toward Rn removal from groundwater. Based on the results, Rn is considered to interact with F through the van der Waals force, which limits the volatilization of Rn from the solution. Similarly, the fluorine-functionalized sorbent would interact preferentially with Rn, thereby enhancing its sorption and removal from groundwater.

Zeolite-based catalysts for the removal of trace olefins from aromatic streams

Abstract

Removal of trace olefins from aromatic liquids was investigated on UZM-8 and MCM-22, which are the family of MWW zeolites. Both these zeolites were synthesized with similar Si/Al ratio and characterized by various techniques such as XRD, SEM, ICP, N2 adsorption, Ammonia TPD and solid-state MAS-NMR. Olefin conversion activity over UZM-8 was found to be significantly higher than that of MCM-22. In addition to this, deactivation of UZM-8 was slower than the MCM-22. UZM-8 with irregular stacking of MWW layers possess high external surface area and exposes more number of active sites to the reactant molecules. Mesopores generated due to the disordered layers of UZM-8 allows the fast diffusion of the substrate molecules in which pore clogging does not occur, thus making it more active and slow deactivation than that of MCM-22.

2D Oxide Nanomaterials to Address the Energy Transition and Catalysis

2D oxide nanomaterials constitute a broad range of materials, with a wide array of current and potential applications, particularly in the fields of energy storage and catalysis for sustainable energy production. Despite the many similarities in structure, composition, and synthetic methods and uses, the current literature on layered oxides is diverse and disconnected. A number of reviews can be found in the literature, but they are mostly focused on one of the particular subclasses of 2D oxides. This review attempts to bridge the knowledge gap between individual layered oxide types by summarizing recent developments in all important 2D oxide systems including supported ultrathin oxide films, layered clays and double hydroxides, layered perovskites, and novel 2D-zeolite-based materials. Particular attention is paid to the underlying similarities and differences between the various materials, and the subsequent challenges faced by each research community. The potential of layered oxides toward future applications is critically evaluated, especially in the areas of electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, biomass conversion, and fine chemical synthesis. Attention is also paid to corresponding novel 3D materials that can be obtained via sophisticated engineering of 2D oxides.

Temperature-controlled phase-transfer hydrothermal synthesis of MWW zeolites and their alkylation performances

MWW zeolites have been synthesized with hexamethyleneimine/aniline as the structure-directing/promoting agent. High conversion is achieved in the liquid-phase alkylation of benzene with ethylene above 210 °C for MCM-56.
