Abstract
Background Sarcopenia is a common and serious problem in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD). Lean tissue mass (LTM) by bioimpedance spectrometry is a reasonably accurate method for measuring muscle mass. Fat-free edema-free body mass (FEBM) as determined by the creatinine kinetics method is a traditional method but evidence to support its use is limited. Methods We studied 198 new PD patients. Their serial LTM and FEBM were reviewed and compared by the Bland and Altman method. Multi-variable regression model was used to determine factors associated with the disparity between the two methods. Results There was a significant but moderate correlation between LTM and FEBM (r = 0.309, P < .0001). LTM was consistently higher than FEBM, with an average difference 13.98 kg (95% confidence interval -5.90 to 33.86 kg), and the difference strongly correlated with LTM (r = 0.781, P < .0001). By multivariable linear regression analysis, LTM and residual renal function were independent predictors of the LTM-FEBM difference. Where the measurements were repeated in 12 months, there was no significant correlation between ∆LTM and ∆FEBM (r = -0.031, P = .799). Conclusion There is a significant difference between LTM and FFBM. This discrepancy correlated with LTM and residual renal function, highlighting the limitations of FFBM in assessing skeletal muscle mass.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia is common in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Modified creatinine index (MCrI) by the Canaud's formula and single-pool Kt/V value is an accurate surrogate marker for muscle mass in hemodialysis patients. However, the method of calculation and validity of MCrI has not been tested in PD. Methods In the exploratory cohort, we studied 138 consecutive patients converted from PD to hemodialysis. Their MCrI during PD, calculated by the Canaud's formula with total weekly Kt/V, and the conventional MCrI after conversion to HD, were compared by the Bland-Altman method. Their correlation with muscle mass as determined by bioimpedance spectroscopy and creatinine kinetic methods was explored. The result was then validated in a second cohort of 605 incident PD patients. Results In the exploratory cohort, the average bias of computing MCrI during PD and hemodialysis was 0.758 mg/kg/day (95%CI -4.356 to 5.873 mg/kg/day). The MCrI during PD significantly correlated with the muscle mass by creatinine kinetics (r = .684, P < .0001) and by bioimpedance spectroscopy (r = .641, P < .0001), but not with protein nitrogen appearance, overhydration, or adipose tissue mass, and the result was similar in the validation cohort. For incident PD patients, MCrI quartile was significantly associated with the risk of death from all cause in 12 months (Gray's test, P = .013) but not conversion to chronic hemodialysis (P = .14). Conclusion In PD patients, MCrI computed by the Canaud's formula and total weekly Kt/V is a simple and reliable marker of skeletal muscle mass and may serve as a short-term prognostic indicator.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous adult studies have yielded conflicting results regarding whether the presence (D +) or absence (D-) of peritoneal dialysate affects the accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measurements. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the accuracy of BIA data varies between D + and D- measurements in children. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited chronic kidney disease stage 5 patients aged 3 to 18 years who received peritoneal dialysis. Body composition was assessed by multifrequency BIA, and values were compared between D + and D- measurements using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS Fifty paired BIA measurements were collected from 18 patients with a mean age of 13.6 ± 4.1 years and a mean dialysate fill volume of 1,006 ± 239.7 ml/m2. Sixteen out of 17 BIA parameters (94.1%) exhibited excellent correlations between D + and D- measurements (ICC values = 0.954, 0.998). There was a trend of increased fluid status, including extracellular water, edema index, and overhydration, in D + measurements, with mean differences (95% CIs) of 0.5 (0.4, 0.6) L, 0.002 (0.001, 0.002), and 0.1 (0.1, 0.2) L, respectively. Soft lean mass and fat-free mass were higher in D + measurements, with mean differences (95% CIs) of 1.4 (1.2, 1.6), and 1.6 (1.4, 1.8) kg, respectively. In addition, patients older than 10 years had a stronger correlation between D + and D- measurements than younger patients. CONCLUSIONS A total of 94.1% of BIA parameters exhibited excellent correlations between D + and D- measurements, especially patients older than 10 years. We recommend that BIA measurements be collected from children regardless of the presence of peritoneal dialysate.

Abstract
Muscle wasting is a frequent finding in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially in those with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on chronic dialysis. Muscle wasting in CKD is a main feature of malnutrition, and results principally from a vast array of metabolic derangements typical of the syndrome, that converge in determining reduced protein synthesis and accelerated protein catabolism. In this clinical setting, muscle wasting is also frequently associated with disability, frailty, infections, depression, worsened quality of life and increased mortality. On these grounds, the evaluation of nutritional status is crucial for an adequate management of renal patients, and consists of a comprehensive assessment allowing for the identification of malnourished patients and patients at nutritional risk. It is based essentially on the assessment of the extent and trend of body weight loss, as well as of spontaneous dietary intake. Another key component of this evaluation is the determination of body composition, which, depending on the selected method among several ones available, can identify accurately patients with decreased muscle mass. The choice will depend on the availability and ease of application of a specific technique in clinical practice based on local experience, staff resources and good repeatability over time. Surrogate methods, such as anthropometry and bioimpedance analysis (BIA), represent the most readily available techniques. Other methods based on imaging modalities [dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and whole body computed tomography (CT)] are considered to be the "gold standard" reference methods for muscle mass evaluation, but their use is mainly confined to research purposes. New imaging modalities, such as segmental CT scan and muscle ultrasound have been proposed in recent years. Particularly, ultrasound is a promising technique in this field, as it is commonly available for bedside evaluation of renal patients in nephrology wards. However, more data are needed before a routine use of ultrasound for muscle mass evaluation can be recommended in clinical practice.

Abstract
Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is routinely used in peritoneal dialysis patients and might aid fluid status assessment in patients with liver cirrhosis, but the effect of ascites volume removal on BIS-readings is unknown. Here we determined changes in BIS-derived parameters and clinical signs of fluid overload from before to after abdominal paracentesis. Per our pre-specified sample size calculation, we studied 31 cirrhotic patients, analyzing demographics, labs and clinical parameters along with BIS results. Mean volume of the abdominal paracentesis was 7.8 ± 2.6 L. From pre-to post-paracentesis, extracellular volume (ECV) decreased (20.2 ± 5.2 L to 19.0 ± 4.8 L), total body volume decreased (39.8 ± 9.8 L to 37.8 ± 8.5 L) and adipose tissue mass decreased (38.4 ± 16.0 kg to 29.9 ± 12.9 kg; all p < 0.002). Correlation of BIS-derived parameters from pre to post-paracentesis ranged from R² = 0.26 for body cell mass to R² = 0.99 for ECV. Edema did not correlate with BIS-derived fluid overload (FO ≥ 15% ECV), which occurred in 16 patients (51.6%). In conclusion, BIS-derived information on fluid status did not coincide with clinical judgement. The changes in adipose tissue mass support the BIS-model assumption that fluid in the peritoneal cavity is not detectable, suggesting that ascites (or peritoneal dialysis fluid) mass should be subtracted from adipose tissue if BIS is used in patients with a full peritoneal cavity.

Abstract
BackgroundThe characteristics of peritoneal membrane transport differ among patients, affecting the prescription of peritoneal dialysis (PD) modality and glucose exposure in order to achieve an effective dialysis. This study aims to verify the influence of glucose exposure load and peritoneal membrane transport on body composition and nutritional status changes after the first year of PD.MethodsWe examined a cohort of 85 incident PD patients during the first year of treatment. We established a cut-off of 5% to define changes in dry weight (DW), lean tissue mass (LTM), and fat mass (FM).ResultsIn total, 50.6% of the patients presented DW gain, 41.2% showed LTM loss, and 65.9% presented FM gain. Over the time (T0 – T12), we found significant differences in DW, body mass index (BMI), adipose tissue mass (ATM), FM and fat tissue index (FTI). Patients with lower dialysate-to-plasma creatinine ratio showed DW and FM gain. We observed a higher percentage of nonfast transporters in DW gain when comparing with DW no gain. As for glucose exposure load, no body composition changes were seen.ConclusionsMost patients presented DW gain, FM gain, and LTM loss. The characteristics of peritoneal membrane transport affected DW during the first year, changes being greater in nonfast than in fast transporters.

Abstract
Although the need to assess hydration is well recognized, laboratory tests and clinical impressions are impractical and lack sensitivity, respectively, to be clinically meaningful. Different approaches use bioelectrical impedance measurements to overcome some of these limitations and aid in the classification of hydration status. One indirect approach utilizes single or multiple frequency bioimpedance in regression equations and theoretical models, respectively, with anthropometric measurements to predict fluid volumes (bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy-BIS) and estimate fluid overload based on the deviation of calculated to reference extracellular fluid volume. Alternatively, bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) uses direct phase-sensitive measurements of resistance and reactance, measured at 50 kHz, normalized for standing height, then plotted on a bivariate graph, resulting in a vector with length related to fluid content, and direction with phase angle that indexes hydration status. Comparison with healthy population norms enables BIVA to classify (normal, under-, and over-) and rank (change relative to pre-treatment) hydration independent of body weight. Each approach has wide-ranging uses in evaluation and management of clinical groups with over-hydration with an evolving emphasis on prognosis. This review discusses the advantages and limitations of BIS and BIVA for hydration assessment with comments on future applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Maintaining euvolaemia is an essential yet challenging objective in management of patients on peritoneal dialysis. Optimal method to assess volume status remains to be determined. In this review, we will discuss the risk factors and clinical outcomes of fluid overload in PD patients, and examine the role of bioimpedance study in fluid management. RECENT FINDINGS Applying bioimpedance study to measure body composition has attracted increasing attention because it is noninvasive and provides point-of-care assessment of fluid status. Observational studies suggested that presence of residual renal function did not necessarily protect peritoneal dialysis patients from developing fluid overload. This reinforces the importance of fluid restriction in peritoneal dialysis patients, in whom the thirst sensation could be exacerbated by hyperglycaemia. Notably, fluid overload is present in significant portion of asymptomatic patients. Moreover, bioimpedance-defined fluid overload is associated with increase in all-cause mortality, technique failure and possibly excess peritonitis rate. SUMMARY Although future studies should investigate the clinical benefit of bioimpedance-guided fluid management in high-risk subgroup, raising awareness among clinicians, together with structured clinical assessment and dietary counselling are the cornerstone to maintain stable fluid status.

Abstract
Background Fluid overload is common among asymptomatic peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We aim to determine the prevalence and prognostic significance of fluid overload, as measured by bioimpedance spectroscopy, in asymptomatic incident PD patients. Methods We performed a single-center study on 311 incident PD patients. Volume status was represented by the volume of overhydration (OH), OH/extracellular water (ECW) ratio, ECW/total body water (TBW) ratio, and ECW to intracellular water (ICW) ratio (E:I ratio). Patient survival, technique survival and cardiovascular event-free survival were determined. Results The median period of follow up was 27.3 months. Fluid overload was present in 272 patients (87.5%) when defined as OH volume over 1.1L. All hydration parameters significantly correlated with Charlson Comorbidity Index, and inversely with total Kt/V, and serum albumin. Multivariate cause-specific Cox analysis showed that volume status independently predicted patient survival; every 0.1 unit increase in E:I ratio was associated with 24.5% increase in all-cause mortality (adjusted cause-specific hazard ratio [ACSHR] 1.245, p = 0.002). Hydration status was also an independent predictor of cardiovascular event-free survival after excluding hospital admission for congestive heart failure; each 0.1 unit increase in E:I ratio was associated with 18.7% decrease in cardiovascular event-free survival (ACSHR 1.187, p = 0.011). In contrast, hydration parameters were not associated with technique survival. Conclusions Fluid overload is common in asymptomatic incident PD patients and is a strong predictor of patient survival and cardiovascular event. The impact of bioimpedance spectroscopy-guided fluid management on the outcome of PD patients deserves further study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over-hydration (OH) and malnutrition are prevalent among patients on dialysis therapy. The prevalence of OH and malnutrition as well as the risk factors associated with OH and malnutrition in our patients on home peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home haemodialysis (HD) are examined. DESIGN AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study. The hydration and nutritional status of the study groups were assessed by a Body Composition Monitor. Patients who were stable on home dialysis therapy for over one year were invited to participate. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify associated factors and determine the predictors of OH and malnutrition, respectively. RESULTS Eighty-eight patients (41 PD and 47 home HD) were recruited. A 32.95% of our patients on home dialysis therapy were in OH status. There was a significance difference in the prevalence of hydration status between patients on PD and home HD (p = 0.014), as overhydration was more common in patients on PD than home HD (46.34 vs. 21.28%). Dehydration was more common in patients on home HD than PD (29.79 vs. 9.76%). Male gender, decreasing haemoglobin level and presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) were risk factors of OH on multivariable analysis. There was no significance difference in the prevalence of malnutrition between patients on PD and home HD (p = 0.27). Increasing Fat Tissue Index (FTI), height and patients on PD therapy were at higher risk of malnutrition. CONCLUSION OH and malnutrition were prevalent patients on home dialysis therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE In peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, body fluid homeostasis is dependent on peritoneal elimination of water and solutes. Patients with less favorable peritoneal transport parameters should be more overhydrated. Despite this, the association between faster transport and overhydration (OH) is weak, and the factors that influence hydration status are still poorly characterized. Modified peritoneal equilibration tests (PET) offer us new parameters that might correlate better with hydration status, like free water transport (FWT). The aim of this study was thus to establish the relationships between new peritoneal transport parameters and body composition parameters estimated by bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS). METHODS Prospective observational study on incident PD patients with a baseline and 1-year follow-up evaluation. RESULTS 61 patients were included in the baseline evaluation, 19 of whom had a 1-year follow-up evaluation; 67.2% were fluid overloaded. There was a negative correlation between D/P creatinine and FWT (r = -0.598, p = 0.000). The fraction of FWT was negatively correlated with OH (r = -0.302, p = 0.018). Peritoneal protein losses (PPL) were also correlated with OH (r = 0.287, p = 0.028). There were no significant differences in OH according to small-solute transport status or fluid output parameters. After 1 year, we observed a significant worsening of renal function and an improvement in 24-hour ultrafiltration (UF) and hydration status, but we detected no differences in peritoneal transport of water or solutes that could explain these changes. CONCLUSIONS There is a poor relationship between kidney/peritoneal function parameters and body composition parameters. The fraction of FWT and PPL may be underestimated markers of peritoneal health and of its contribution to the hydration status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Insulin resistance has been associated with cardiovascular disease in peritoneal dialysis patients. Few studies have addressed the impact of fast transport status or dialysis prescription on insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to test whether insulin resistance is associated with obesity parameters, peritoneal transport rate, and glucose absorption. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS Insulin resistance was evaluated with homeostasis model assessment method (HOMA-IR), additionally corrected by adiponectin (HOMA-AD). Enrolled patients were prevalent nondiabetics attending at Santo António Hospital Peritoneal Dialysis Unit, who were free of hospitalization or infectious events in the previous 3 months (51 patients aged 50.4 ± 15.9 years, 59% women). Leptin, adiponectin, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 (IGFBP-1), and daily glucose absorption were also measured. Lean tissue index, fat tissue index (FTI), and relative fat mass (rel.FM) were assessed using multifrequency bioimpedance. Patients were categorized according to dialysate to plasma creatinine ratio at 4 hours, 3.86% peritoneal equilibration test, and obesity parameters. RESULTS Obesity was present in 49% of patients according to rel.FM. HOMA-IR correlated better with FTI than with body mass index. Significant correlations were found in obese, but not in nonobese patients, between HOMA-IR and leptin, leptin/adiponectin ratio (LAR), and IGFBP-1. HOMA-IR correlated with HOMA-AD, but did not correlate with glucose absorption or transport rate. There were no significant differences in insulin resistance indices, glucose absorption, and body composition parameters between fast and nonfast transporters. A total of 18 patients (35.3%) who had insulin resistance presented with higher LAR and rel.FM (7.3 [12.3, interquartile range] versus 0.7 [1.4, interquartile range], P<0.001, and 39.4 ± 10.1% versus 27.2 ± 11.5%, P=0.002, respectively), lower IGFBP-1 (8.2 ± 7.2 versus 21.0 ± 16.3 ng/ml, P=0.002), but similar glucose absorption and small-solute transport compared with patients without insulin resistance. FTI and LAR were independent correlates of HOMA-IR in multivariate analysis adjusted for glucose absorption and small-solute transport (r=0.82, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Insulin resistance in nondiabetic peritoneal dialysis patients is associated with obesity and LAR independent of glucose absorption and small-solute transport status. Fast transport status was not associated with higher likelihood of obesity or insulin resistance.

Abstract
Background Non-euvolaemia in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is associated with elevated mortality risk. There is an urgent need to collect data to help us understand the association between clinical practices and hydration and nutritional status, and their effects on patient outcome. Methods The aim of this prospective international, longitudinal observational cohort study is to follow up the hydration and nutritional status, as measured by bioimpedance spectroscopy using the body composition monitor (BCM) of incident PD patients for up to 5 years. Measures of hydration and nutritional status and of clinical, biochemical and therapy-related data are collected directly before start of PD treatment, at 1 and 3 months, and then every 3 months. This paper presents the protocol and a pre-specified analysis of baseline data of the cohort. Results A total of 1092 patients (58.1% male, 58.0 ± 15.3 years) from 135 centres in 32 countries were included. Median fluid overload (FO) was 2.0 L (males) and 0.9 L (females). Less than half of the patients were normohydrated (38.7%), whereas FO > 1.1 L was seen in 56.5%. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 139.5 ± 21.8 and 80.0 ± 12.8 mmHg, respectively, and 25.1% of patients had congestive heart failure [New York Heart Association (NYHA) 1 or higher]. A substantial number of patients judged to be not overhydrated on clinical judgement appeared to be overhydrated by BCM measurement. Overhydration at baseline was independently associated with male gender and diabetic status. Conclusions The majority of patients starting on PD are overhydrated already at start of PD. This may have important consequences on clinical outcomes and preservation of residual renal function. Substantial reclassification of hydration status by BCM versus on a clinical basis was necessary, especially in patients who were not overtly overhydrated. Both clinical appreciation and bioimpedance should be combined in clinical decision-making on hydration status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fluid status is an independent predictor of mortality in dialysis patients. Current methods of fluid assessment have several limitations. SUMMARY An ideal method should be cheap, portable, easy to perform without extensive training, reproducible and determines patients' excess or deficit of total body water. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) fulfils many of these criteria and can give additional information on fat and lean tissue composition. The accuracy and precision of BIA has been shown to be equivalent to the 'gold standard' direct estimation techniques. KEY MESSAGES Although there remains some concern about its validity in dialysis patients, fluid overload determined by BIA has been shown to predict mortality. BIA-guided fluid management appears superior to conventional fluid management in achieving clinically important outcomes such as reduction in blood pressure, left ventricular mass index, and arterial stiffness. Accurate setting of dry weight might also help preserve residual renal function by limiting episodes of dehydration. Nevertheless, as with all new technologies, there are issues that still need to be resolved. This will be achieved only with larger prospective interventional studies to explore its specific roles in dialysis cohorts.

We investigated the impact of leptin/adiponectin ratio (L/A) as a predictor of cardiovascular events (CVE) in PD, taking into consideration patient's body composition and the potential role of glucose load. We prospectively followed 66 prevalent PD patients for 47.0 ± 28.2 months. New CVE were evaluated. Lean tissue index (LTI), relative fat mass (relFM) and relative overhydration (relOH) using multifrequency bioimpedance (BCM) were assessed; serum lipids, interleukin-6 (IL-6), leptin and adiponectin were measured. We established the determinants of L/A using multiple linear regression and the impact of L/A on CVE. Obesity was present in 47 (73.4%) patients according to relFM, and in seven (10.6%) according to body mass index (BMI). Leptin and L/A exhibited a stronger correlation with relFM (both r = 0.62, P < 0.0001) than with BMI (r = 0.46 and r = 0.51, respectively, both P < 0.0001). L/A showed a significant correlation with triglycerides (r = 0.41, P = 0.001) and HDL-cholesterol (r = -0.358, P = 0.003), better than isolated leptin or adiponectin. RelFM (RR = 0.130, 95%confidence interval [CI]:0.086-0.174, P < 0.0001) and LTI (RR = 0.194, 95%CI:0.037-0.351, P = 0.016) were independent predictors of L/A (R(2) = 0.67). Patients who suffered new CVE were older (59.12 ± 12.41 vs. 47.52 ± 13.84years, P = 0.003) and had a higher relOH (11.28 ± 7.29 vs. 6.60 ± 8.16%, P = 0.028). L/A was significantly higher in patients with CVE[2.29 (1.79) vs. 0.65 (1.73), P = 0.028] but this association was only put on evidence after excluding patients with wasting. BMI is an inaccurate method to classify obesity in PD since it underestimates its prevalence compared with body composition assessment using BCM. High adiponectin and low leptin are associated with a more favorable metabolic risk profile in peritoneal dialysis. The L/A is determined by relFM and by LTI. A higher L/A is associated with CVE in PD patients without wasting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is a valuable tool to assess nutrition and volume status in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. However, data about the influence of intraperitoneal fluid on body composition measures are conflicting, and there is no clear consensus about whether the abdomen should be drained before the procedure. We designed a comparison study to detect the influence of intra-abdominal fluid on BIS results. METHODS We performed 73 pairs of BIS measurements in 34 stable PD patients, first with the peritoneum filled with a 1.36% glucose dialysate solution and then after the solution was drained. Patients stayed in the supine position for 10 minutes before the BIS procedure, and the electrodes were not moved between measures. Clinical and demographic data were collected, as were analytic parameters of nutrition and volume status. RESULTS Fluid overload is overestimated when BIS is performed with a full abdomen (1.82 ± 1.73 L vs 1.64 ± 1.68 L, p = 0.043). We also found a spurious overestimation in extracellular water (16.40 ± 3.21 L vs 16.24 ± 3.16 L, p < 0.001) and in relative overhydration (8.29% ± 6.96% vs 7.14% ± 6.79%, p = 0.017). No differences in intracellular water or parameters of nutrition were found. We observed negative correlations for the extracellular water overestimation with age (r = -0.245, p = 0.037), serum B-type natriuretic peptide (r = -0.366, p = 0.036), body mass index (r = -0.248, p = 0.035), and lean tissue index (r = -0.427, p = 0.001). The difference in extracellular water correlated only with body mass index (r = -0.259, p = 0.039). We also found that, assessed at 50 KHz, whole-body impedance (-4.52 ± 8.37, p = 0.001) and phase angle (-0.08 ± 0.23 degrees, p = 0.002) were both lower when BIS was performed in patients with a full abdomen. CONCLUSIONS Fluid overload is overestimated by BIS when performed in patients with dialysate in the peritoneum. The observed differences are greater in younger, more poorly nourished, or less overhydrated patients. If more precise results are required, we suggest that the abdomen be drained before BIS is performed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MFBIA) is increasingly being used to assess peritoneal dialysis patients. Protein energy wasting (PEW) is a recognised complication of peritoneal dialysis. Although MFBIA can be used to assess body composition, measurements can be affected by fluid overload, and we wished to determine whether the presence of peritoneal dialysate in the peritoneal cavity equally could affect MFBIA-derived body composition assessments. SUBJECTS/METHODS Fifty consecutive adult patients had MFBIA made with 2l 22.7 g/l dextrose dialysate instilled into the peritoneal cavity and then after draining out. RESULTS When full, extracellular water (ECW) and the ratio of ECW to total body water (TBW) were greater compared with when empty: 13.9 ± 3.0l versus 13.4 ± 3.0, and 0.393 ± 0.01 versus 0.391 ± 0.01, P<0.001, respectively. Segmental ECW/TBW was only different for the trunk, 0.395 ± 0.01 full versus 0.392 ± 0.01 empty, P<0.0001. Body composition changed with a fall in skeletal muscle mass from 26.1 ± 6.3 to 25.2 ± 6.1 kg, P<0.001, and a smaller reduction in body fat from 19.3 ± 8.4 to 19.1 ± 8.0 kg, P=0.0104. CONCLUSION MFBIA measurements made in peritoneal dialysis patients with peritoneal dialysate instilled can overestimate body composition, including muscle mass, and as such potentially delay the recognition of PEW. Thus, for more accurate MFBIA in peritoneal dialysis patients, the dialysate should be drained out.
