Assessment of Dynamic Balancing Performance of Synchronized Ice Skaters With Sudden Provocation Test via Principal Component Analysis

Background: Balancing performance can be affected by regular and high-level athletic training, which has not been fully explored in synchronized ice skaters. This study aimed to analyze the dynamic balancing performance by assessing the principal and compensatory movements performed during the sudden provocation tests and evaluating the parameters that characterize the platform’s motion. Method: Twelve young female synchronized ice skaters and 12 female age-matched controls participated. Sudden provocation tests were completed three times in bipedal stance and in single-leg stances, and sport-specific fatigue session was inserted between the repetitions. Results: Significantly more time was necessary to recover balance for both groups after the fatiguing sessions (p < .05). Interestingly, skaters performed less effectively in the simplest condition (bipedal stance) than the control group (p < .05). The principal component analysis showed that the first principal movement was the same for both groups. The skater group used the upper body and arms more often to compensate, while the control group’s recovery strategy consisted mainly of abduction of the elevated leg. The damping ratio and the relative variance of the first principal movement showed a negative correlation (p < .05), suggesting that those with superior balancing effectiveness recruited more compensatory movements.

Postural control in top-level female volleyball players

Background

The aim of this study was to compare the postural control of the Poland national women’s volleyball team players with a control group of non-training young women. It was hypothesized that volleyball players use a specific balance control strategy due to the high motor requirements of their team sport.

Methods

Static postural sway variables were measured in 31 athletes and 31 non-training women. Participants were standing on a force plate with eyes open, and their center of pressure signals were recorded for the 20s with the sampling rate of 20 Hz in the medial-lateral (ML) and anterior-posterior (AP) planes.

Results

In both AP and ML planes, athletes had lower range and higher fractal dimension of the COP. They had also higher peak frequency than control group in the ML plane only. The remaining COP indices including variability, mean velocity and mean frequency did not display any intergroup differences.

Conclusion

It can be assumed that due to the high motor requirements of their sport discipline Polish female volleyball players have developed a unique posture control. On the court they have to distribute their sensory resources optimally between balance control and actions resulting from the specifics of the volleyball game. There are no clearly defined criteria for optimal postural strategies for elite athletes, but they rather vary depending on a given sport. The results of our research confirm this claim.

Trial registration

The tests were previously approved by the Bioethical Commission of the Chamber of Physicians in Opole. (Resolution No. 151/13.12.2007). This study adheres to the CONSORT guidelines.

Postural stability against full-field dynamic visual disturbance in archery players

 Objectives : The effects of full-field dynamic visual disturbance on body sway were examined in archery players (n = 24), ball game players (n = 35), and untrained subjects (n = 34). Methods : Participants were asked to stand on a platform surrounded a box, the inside of which was randomly dotted. After the box suddenly began to swing and continued to swing back and forth at a frequency of 0.42 Hz for 60 seconds in a damped sinusoidal waveform, the body center sway was recorded using a stabilometer. Results : Standard deviation (SD) of body center sway in the anterior-posterior direction suddenly increased just after the box began to swing, and gradually decreased as the box swung in a damped sinusoidal waveform. After a sudden initial increase in SD of body center sway, it significantly decreased in archery players, compared with that of ball game players 20 seconds or untrained subjects 15 and 20 seconds after the onset of the box motion. Conclusion : Archery players showed higher stability against visual disturbance, compared with ball game players and untrained subjects, suggesting that they rely on proprioceptive inputs to maintain balance, and that their training re-weights sensorimotor dominance from vision to proprioception for posture regulation to increase shooting accuracy. Comparison of posturographic parameters between young taekwondo and tennis athletes

[Purpose] Physical activity can influence the development of postural control and balance. Therefore, the aim of study was to use posturography assessment to compare balance control on the Romberg test between athletes in two very different sports, taekwondo and tennis. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-nine young athletes participated in the study, 11 forming the taekwondo group and 18 the tennis group. Posturography was performed using the FreeMed system (Sensor Medica). Between-group differences were evaluated using unpaired Student’s t-test. [Results] There was a significance between-group difference in the centre of pressure and the ellipse surface area with no between-group difference in frontal and sagittal plane postural control. [Conclusion] The taekwondo athletes displayed greater stability than tennis athletes, with a smaller ellipse area and a decrease in the amplitude of oscillations of the centre of pressure along the frontal plane, adaptations which likely reflect the demands of the taekwondo. Further studies are needed to support these conclusions.
