Flux model to estimate the transport of mercury species in a contaminated lagoon (Ria de Aveiro, Portugal)

Assessing and predicting the changes for inorganic mercury and methylmercury concentrations in surface waters of a tidal estuary (Adour Estuary, SW France)

Total and dissolved concentrations of inorganic mercury (IHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in water (Adour Estuary) were determined during three sampling campaigns and related to biogeochemical variables (nutrients, organic matter). Factors (sampling time, sample type) were included in analysis of covariance with effect separation. The urban estuary suffered historically from anthropogenic sources, however, decreased emissions have reduced Hg concentrations. Total IHg (0.51-3.42 ng L^-1) and MeHg (25-81 pg L^-1) concentrations are additively described by suspended particulate matter and particulate organic carbon. Higher total concentrations, carried by organic-rich particles, were found near specific discharge points (0.79-8.02 ng L^-1 and 34-235 pg L^-1 for IHg and MeHg, respectively). The associated high dissolved MeHg concentrations could not be explained only by biogeochemical variables. Better efficiency of the models is found for total than for dissolved concentrations. Models should be checked with other contaminants or with estuaries, suffering from downstream contamination.

Rapid determination of femtomolar methylmercury in seawater using automated GC-AFS method: Optimisation of the extraction step and method validation

Among ionic mercury species methyl mercury (MMHg) is the most toxic form present in the environment, which is known to be bio-accumulative neurotoxin in the aquatic food chain and could provide the major route of exposure for humans to mercury through consumption of marine food products. The availability of reliable analytical methods for evaluating spatial and temporal contamination trends of MMHg in the ocean is an important prerequisite for marine monitoring. Sound strategies for marine monitoring call also for measurement systems capable of producing comparable analytical results with demonstrated quality. A sensitive analytical procedure for environmental monitoring of MMHg content in seawater, based on specific extraction and Gas Chromatography Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry validated according to the requirements of international guidelines and standards, ISO 17025 and Eurachem guidelines, is presented in this study. The entire measurement process was described by mathematical equations and all factors influencing the results were systematically investigated. Selectivity, working range, linearity, recovery (94 ± 4%), repeatability (3.3%-4.5%), intermediate precision (2.9%), limits of detection (0.0004 ng kg^-1as Hg) were systematically assessed. The relative expanded uncertainties obtained were in the range from 16% to 25%, (k = 2). Modelling of the entire measurement process related obtained values for MMHg in seawater to the International System of units (Kg). The potential of this analytical procedure was tested and additionally validated via inter laboratory comparison exercise organised under the Geotraces programme. Obtained results were in excellent agreement with the assigned values. The proposed analytical procedure from the sample preparation to the measurement step combined with the high efficiency of the new generation of the automated MMHg analyzers is fit for purpose for routine monitoring studies on the dissolved MMHg in the costal and open ocean seawaters.

Twists and turns of an oyster's life: effects of different depuration periods on physiological biochemical functions of oysters

Aquaculture activities are often established in the vicinity of highly populated, potentially contaminated areas. Animals cultured at such locations, namely bivalves, are frequently used as test organisms in ecotoxicological testing. In this case, a period of depuration is required to allow the normalization of physiological processes, which are likely to be altered after exposure to a multiplicity of waterborne contaminants occurring in the wild. One of the most important species in modern marine aquaculture is the oyster species Crassostrea gigas. The aim of this study was to assess if the current depuration time frame of 24 h (adopted by most aquaculture facilities), is long enough to permit oysters to revert potential toxic effects exerted by environmental contaminants, allowing their use in laboratory-based ecotoxicological studies. The selected approach involved the monitoring of biochemical (antioxidant defence, oxidative damage, phase II metabolism, and neurological homeostasis) and physiological (condition index) parameters, along a period of 42 days. The obtained results showed that a period of 24 h does not revert any of the potential toxic effects caused by environmental contaminants to which animals may have been previously subjected; even a period of 42 days was not long enough for the oysters to completely normalize the levels of their antioxidant defences, namely total GPx activity, which increased over time. Lipid peroxidation was also increased during the depuration period, and the activity of the metabolic isoenzymes GSTs was significantly decreased. Furthermore, AChE activity measured in the adductor muscle of oysters was increased over time. These assumptions suggest that a period of depuration longer than 24 h is mandatory to obtain adequate test organisms of this oyster species, to be used for ecotoxicological testing purposes.

Multiple regression analysis to assess the contamination with metals and metalloids in surface sediments (Aveiro Lagoon, Portugal)

An innovative multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate metal/metalloid contamination in the surface sediments of a coastal lagoon. The concentrations of metals/metalloids were represented as a function of geochemical characteristics of the sediments (fine fraction, concentrations of organic carbon, Ca, Al, Mn) and distances between sampling points. The effect of distances on the concentrations were negligible for Li, Co, Ni, Ba, V, Cr, and only geochemical variables specific for each element explained its spatial variation. The concentrations of As, Cu, Zn and Pb were influenced by both geochemical and geographical distance variables, the latter representing the anthropogenic influence and the extent of transport of contaminants away from the upstream source. Enrichment of the sediment with Ba, As, Co, Cr and V was determined mainly by enrichment with Mn. The proposed approach is supplementary to the traditional utilization of enrichment factors, and is better suited for systems with anthropogenic influence.

Modeling phaeopigment concentrations in water from a shallow mesotrophic lagoon

Concentrations of phaeopigments (Pha) and chlorophyll a (Chl) were determined in surface waters from a temperate lagoon during six sampling campaigns at high and at low tide. In order to develop models for phaeopigment concentration in water, it was necessary to replace Chl with photosynthetic pigment concentration (P_t  = Pha+Chl) as one of the explanatory variables. Under first approximation, food availability and water temperature (T) could be considered as independent variables. The concentrations of Pha were then determined following seasonal change of response curves of the consumer community on T. However, multiple regression models with P_t , T and, eventually, salinity as explanatory variables were better able to depict Pha. All equations, developed with P_t , were also solved using Chl as an input variable. Although part of the performance was lost, such back-transformed models can be used at low/medium T and moderate to high concentrations of Chl. The developed equations about middle to long-term variations of Pha could be applied to study the biogeochemistry of contaminants related to Pha and to evaluate the dependence on temperature of phytoplankton utilization by consumers.
