Implementation of laser flash photolysis for radical-induced reactions and environmental implications

Confronted with the imperative crisis of water quality deterioration, the pursuit of state-of-the-art decontamination technologies for a sustainable future never stops. Fitting into the framework of suitability, advanced oxidation processes have been demonstrated as powerful technologies to produce highly reactive radicals for the degradation of toxic and refractory contaminants. Therefore, investigations on their radical-induced degradation have been the subject of scientistic and engineering interests for decades. To better understand the transient nature of these radical species and rapid degradation processes, laser flash photolysis (LFP) has been considered as a viable and powerful technique due to its high temporal resolution and rapid response. Although a number of studies exploited LFP for one (or one class of) specific reaction(s), reactions of many possible contaminants with radicals are largely unknown. Therefore, there is a pressing need to critically review its implementation for kinetic quantification and mechanism elucidation. Within this context, we introduce the development process and milestones of LFP with emphasis on compositions and operation principles. We then compare the specificity and suitability of different spectral modes for monitoring radicals and their decay kinetics. Radicals with high environmental relevance, namely hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical, and reactive chlorine species, are selected, and we discuss their generation, detection, and implications within the frame of LFP. Finally, we highlight remaining challenges and future perspectives. This review aims to advance our understandings of the implementation of LFP in radical-induced transient processes, and yield new insights for extrapolating this pump-probe technique to make significant strides in environmental implications.

The reaction laws and toxicity effects of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) ozonation degradation on the troposphere

Low-molecular-weight (LMW) phthalate acid esters (PAEs) tend to enter the atmosphere, flying for several kilometers, so it is easy to endanger human health. This work is the first to use quantum chemistry calculations (Gaussian 16 program) and computational toxicology (ECOSAR, TEST, and Toxtree software) to comprehensively study the ozonolysis mechanism of six LMW PAEs (dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dipropyl phthalate (DPP), diisopropyl phthalate (DIP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)) in the atmosphere and the toxicity of DMP (take DMP as an example) in the conversion process. The results show that the electron-donating effect of the ortho position of the LMW PAEs has the most obvious influence on the ozonolysis. We summarized the ozonation reaction law of LMW PAEs at the optimal reaction site. At 298 K, the law of initial ozonolysis total rate constant of the LMW PAEs is k_DIP > k_DPP > k_DIBP > k_DMP > k_DEP > k_DBP, and the range is 9.56 × 10^-25 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1 - 1.47 × 10^-22 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1. According to the results of toxicity assessment, the toxicity of products is lower than DMP for aquatic organisms after ozonolysis. But those products have mutagenicity, developmental toxicity, non-genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, and corrosiveness to the skin. The proposed ozonolysis mechanism promotes our understanding of the environmental risks of PAEs and provides new ideas for studying the degradation of PAEs in the tropospheric gas phase.

Photochemical reaction of superoxide radicals with 1-naphthol

The photochemical reactions between 1-naphthol (1-NP) and the superoxide anion radical (O2•–) were investigated in detail by using 365 nm UV irradiation. The results showed that the conversion rate of 1-NP decreased with the increase of the initial concentration of 1-NP, whereas by increasing the pH and riboflavin concentration, the photochemical reaction was accelerated. The second-order reaction rate constant was estimated to be (3.64 ± 0.17) × 108 L mol−1 s−1. The major photolysis products identified by using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC–MS) were 1,4-naphquinone and 2,3-epoxyresin-2,3-dihydro-1,4-naphquinone, and their reaction pathways were also discussed. An atmospheric model showed that both the bulk water reaction and the heterogeneous surface reaction deserve attention in atmospheric aqueous chemistry.

Photochemical reactions between 1,4-benzoquinone and O2•

The superoxide anion radical (O2•-) is one of the most predominant reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is also involved in diverse chemical and biological processes. In this study, O2•- was generated by irradiating riboflavin in an O2-saturated solution using an ultraviolet lamp (λem = 365 nm) as the light source. The photochemical reduction of 1,4-benzoquinone (p-BQ) by O2•- was explored by 355-nm laser flash photolysis (LFP) and 365-nm UV light steady irradiation. The results showed that the photodecomposition efficiency of p-BQ was influenced by the riboflavin concentration, p-BQ initial concentration, and pH values. The superoxide anion radical originating from riboflavin photolysis served as a reductant to react with p-BQ, forming reduced BQ radicals (BQ•-) with a second-order rate constant of 1.1 × 109 L mol-1 s-1. The main product of the photochemical reaction between p-BQ and O2•- was hydroquinone (H2Q). The present work suggests that the reaction with O2•- is a potential transformation pathway of 1, 4-benzoquinone in atmospheric aqueous environments.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) in atmospheric particles around a large shallow natural lake (Lake Chaohu, China)

The pollution of phthalate esters (PAEs) remains an important issue in the world. Current studies mainly focused on atmospheric PAEs in urban area with strong anthropogenic activities, but there were no studies on PAEs in the ambient air around large natural lake. This paper focused on two sites around Lake Chaohu to investigate the monthly occurrence, composition and source of PAEs in the atmospheric particles around large shallow natural lake. New insights into atmospheric PAEs in large shallow natural lake and the overall fate of PAEs in lake ecosystem were given. The concentrations of the Σ₁₃PAEs in atmospheric particles were at a significantly low level ranging from 2740 to 11,890 pg·m^-3 and 2622 to 15,331 pg·m^-3 in ZM (the lakeshore site) and HB (the downtown site), respectively. There were no statistically significant differences of PAEs between ZM and HB. The highest atmospheric PAE concentrations in August were likely related to the long-range transport from Guangdong Province. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) were the main PAE congeners. Temporally, DIBP and DBP had the highest fractions in winter and the lowest fractions in summer. It might be justified by the condensation of DIBP and DBP from gas phase to particulate phase at low temperature. Multimedia comparison of PAE profiles in Lake Choahu revealed that low molecular weight (LMW) congeners were transported mainly through water while high molecular weight (HMW) congeners were transported mainly through atmosphere.

Photochemical reaction kinetics and mechanistic investigations of nitrous acid with sulfamethazine in tropospheric water

Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important atmospheric pollutant that can strongly absorb ultraviolet irradiation in the region of 300-400 nm, as previously reported. Since the solar irradiance that reaches the surface of the earth has wavelengths greater than 290 nm, the photodissociation of HONO is considered the major method of hydroxyl radical formation in the troposphere. Thus, the photoinduced chemical reactivity of HONO is important. The present work investigated the reaction mechanism and kinetic parameters of HONO and sulfamethazine by using a laser flash photolysis technique and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results indicated that the sulfamethazine degradation rate was influenced by the HONO concentration and the initial concentration of sulfamethazine. Hydroxyl radicals derived from the photolysis of HONO attacked the aromatic ring of sulfamethazine to form sulfamethazine-OH adducts with a second-order rate constant of (3.8 ± 0.3) × 10⁹ L mol^-1 s^-1. This intermediate would then react with HO· and oxygen molecules. The reaction rate constants of sulfamethazine-OH adducts with oxygen are (1.3 ± 0.1) × 10⁷ L mol^-1 s^-1. The generation of sulfanilic acid and pyrimidine implies that the breaking down of S-N bonds of sulfamethazine and its HO adducts probably occur at the same time.
