Emission characteristics for co-combustion of leather wastes, sewage sludge, and coal in a laboratory-scale entrained flow tube furnace

Acid gas emission and ash fusion characteristics of multi-component leather solid waste incineration in bubbling fluidized bed

The tanning sludge (TS) and other tanning solid wastes are produced in significant quantities by the leather industry. To evaluate the combustion properties, acid gaseous pollutant conversion, and ash management, co-firing of TS with various wastes was investigated in a bubbling fluidized bed. TG-FTIR test indicated that tanning solid wastes had superior combustion properties and include more gaseous pollutants than TS. The leather mixed solid waste (LMSW) formed by mixing had better fuel characteristics than TS. The conversion rates of SO2 and HCl of LMSW incineration were 67% and 40%, respectively. The co-combustion of TS and solid wastes reduces the conversion rate of acid gas. Increasing the proportion of high-inorganic chlorine raw material could further reduce the conversion rate and increase the ash fusion temperature appropriately. Because ash and slag were primarily composed of Ca and Fe elements, the addition of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) can increase ash melting point while reducing acid gas emissions. When CaCO3 was added at a calcium to sulfur (Ca/S) ratio of 2, the acid gas emission was reduced by more than 80% and the softening temperature was raised by 90 °C. When Ca/S is greater than 2, the economics of adding CaCO3 decreased.

Gas composition during thermochemical conversion of dry solid fuels and waste-derived slurries

Coal has long remained a promising and widely used energy resource all over the world. Special emphasis is usually put on the research and development of environmentally friendly technologies for the use of coal and coal processing waste. The development of slurry fuels based on coal waste is one of the promising ways to use raw materials with energy potential, recover wastes, and reduce the environmental load. However, no combustion technology has yet been created for heterogeneous wastes as water-based slurries. The physical principles and parameters of the corresponding processes have not been studied adequately. In this research, the environmental combustion indicators (CO₂, CO, H₂, NO_x, and SO₂ concentrations) of slurries based on water and petrochemical, coal, and plant wastes were analyzed for the first time in a wide range of temperatures covering all the typical stages of thermochemical fuel conversion: pyrolysis (400-700 °C), gasification (700-900 °C), and combustion (700-1000 °C). We established the key patterns and aspects of changes in gas concentrations at all the main stages during the thermal decomposition of fuels. The use of water-based fuels at the pyrolysis stage was notable for up to 96% higher concentrations of the key combustible gases (CO, H₂). The temperature extrema were 50-100 °C lower than those of bituminous coal. In terms of the key anthropogenic emissions (CO₂, NO_x, and SO₂), the combustion of slurries also appeared to be 20-77% more environmentally friendly than that of coal depending on the temperature conditions and fuel composition. The maximum positive effect from adding biomass to coal-water slurries was achieved in the temperature range of 850 to 1000 °C. The research findings can be used for developing the technologies for thermal recovery of waste as water slurries, in particular, by intensifying the pyrolysis, gasification, and combustion.

Assessment of PCDD/Fs Emission during Industrial-Organic-Solid-Waste Incineration Process in a Fluidized-Bed Incinerator

This study was conducted in a fluidized-bed incineration plant, evaluating the formation, emission and flux of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) from industrial-organic-solid-waste (IW) incineration. The results revealed that both the total (or I-TEQ) concentrations of toxic and 136 total PCDD/Fs in flue gas (FG), fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA)were ramped up to a higher level than those during municipal-solid-waste (MSW) incineration. A possible explanation was the chlorine (Cl) content of IW. However, the emitted PCDD/Fs in FG (FA/BA) still fulfilled the criteria. Subsequently, similar distribution patterns of PCDD/F isomers were observed in subsystems, indicating a unified formation-pathway. De novo synthesis was detected as the dominant formation-pathway of PCDD/Fs, while high-temperature and precursor syntheses were excluded. DD/DF chlorination formed PCDD/Fs to some extent. Furthermore, the mass flow chart indicated that PCDD/Fs output in primary FG was significantly strengthened (>1000 times) by de novo synthesis, from 1.25 μg I-TEQ/h to 1.67 mg I-TEQ/h. With effective cleaning by APCS, 99.6% of PCDD/Fs in FG were purified. PCDD/Fs in the gas phase were finally emitted at a discharge rate of 7.25 μg I-TEQ/h. However, accumulated FA took most PCDD/Fs into the environment (>99%), reaching 3.56 mg I-TEQ/h.

Emissions from the combustion of high-potential slurry fuels

Slurry fuels based on wood and coal processing and petroleum refinery waste are an environmentally friendly and economically feasible alternative to the conventional solid fuel-coal. As part of this experimental research, we compared a set of fuels (coal and coal-water slurries with and without petrochemicals) by normalizing and calculating the specific concentrations of pollutants from their combustion. The pollutant concentrations were normalized with respect to the mass of burnt fuel, the thermal energy released by combustion, specific mass emissions per unit time, specific maximum mass emissions, and specific mass emissions per 1 kg of fuel equivalent or 1 MJ of thermal energy. The key objective of this research was to develop a method for comparing composite fuels in terms of their relative environmental friendliness. As part of the research, coal combustion was notable for the peak emissions of gaseous pollutants irrespective of the fuel mass and combustion chamber temperature. When slurries were burnt, CO₂, SO₂, and NO_x concentrations were 12-90% lower as compared to coal. The research findings established that the most promising fuel of all the slurries under study is the one based on coal slime and sawdust due to its high environmental indicators.

Research on the Influence of Combustion Methods on NO x Emissions from Co-combustion of Various Tannery Wastes

To further increase combustion efficiency and reduce nitrogen oxide pollution caused by tannery wastes, three raw materials, including tannery sludge, chrome-tanned buffing dust, and chrome shavings, were burned together in a dual-bed model reactor under various conditions. In addition, a thermogravimetric analysis of co-combustion of three tannery wastes was studied in this study, which was conducive to understanding the combustion characteristics and positive effects. The comprehensive combustibility index S, the flammability index K _r, and the stable combustion characteristic index G _b all increased when the tannery sludge was blended with chrome-tanned buffing dust and chrome shavings, indicating that the combustion behavior was improved by co-combustion. For normal combustion, decreasing the gas volume flow and temperature resulted in a decrease in the oxidation of nitrogen compounds, consequently lowering the NO _x emission. During air staged combustion, at an appropriate secondary gas ratio of about 10-40%, the NO _x reduction would be increased from 10.9 to 19.3%. By increasing the tertiary gas volume flow from 0.2 to 1.1 L/min in decoupling combustion, an average relative NO _x reduction efficiency of 47% was attained compared with normal combustion. The results offered a viable technology that resulted in a lower NO _x emission and realized the application of decoupling combustion.

Gum arabic and collagen hydrolysate extracted from hide fleshing wastes as novel wall materials for microencapsulation of Origanum onites L. essential oil through complex coacervation

Renewable resource-based biodegradable materials attract more attention than petroleum-based biodegradable materials to support the sustainable development of ecology. Obtaining collagen hydrolysate (CH) from hide fleshing wastes of leather industry is an environmentally friendly way to develop multifunctional materials that can contribute to technological advances in different industries. In this study, 2:1, 1:1, and 1 2 ratios of gum arabic (GA) and CH extracted from hide fleshing waste were used as wall materials to encapsulate Origanum onites L. essential oil (OOEO) using the complex coacervation method. The encapsulation yield and efficiency, functional group composition, particle size, morphology, and thermal stability of the obtained OOEO microcapsules were characterized. The results showed that the obtained microcapsules had high encapsulation yield and efficiency, as well as good functional properties such as uniform morphology and low water activity. The best mass ratio for the biopolymers (GA:CH) was 1:1. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that OOEO microcapsule samples had a spherical shape. FTIR analysis was performed on obtained microcapsules, confirming the molecular interactions between GA and CH. These findings can be useful in designing an ideal wall material using GA and CH for microencapsulation of essential oils by the complex coacervation method.

PCDD/F levels and phase distributions in a full-scale municipal solid waste incinerator with co-incinerating sewage sludge

Co-incinerating sewage sludge in municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) is an up-to-date disposal way with great prospects to market. To verify the environmental safety of this disposal method, a field study was conducted in a MSWI which has achieved PCDD/Fs ultra-low emission. PCDD/F phase partitioning characteristics, congener profiles, and the influence of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) were also investigated. PCDD/F emission levels ranged from 0.0031 to 0.0053 ng I-TEQ/Nm³, distinctly lower than the national standard. For tests co-incinerating 5% sludge, PCDD/F emission levels were averagely 32% lower than tests mono-combusting municipal solid waste. The phase partitioning study found that PCDD/Fs enriched in condensed water took a non-negligible proportion of the total concentration in flue gas. The removal efficiency of SCR in tests co-incinerating sludge was averaged at 41.9%. However, in tests without adding sewage sludge, PCDD/F concentrations in flus gas after SCR were increased. It was found that the elevations were mainly attributed to the increase of low-chlorinated PCDF congeners in gas-phase. By inference, memory effect existing in SCR might be responsible for the increase of PCDD/F levels. PCDD to PCDF ratios in most of the sampling points were >1, suggesting that de novo synthesis is not the dominant formation pathway in the studied incinerator. This study verified that co-incinerating sewage sludge in the MSWI would not elevate the emission levels of PCDD/Fs. If all of the yielded municipal waste is incinerated with adding 5% sewage sludge, more than half of sewage sludge can be disposed safely in Shenzhen.
