Novel eco-friendly electrospun nanomagnetic zinc oxide hybridized PVA/alginate/chitosan nanofibers for enhanced phenol decontamination

Engineered eco-friendly composite membranes with superhydrophobic/hydrophilic dual-layer for DCMD system

Considerable advancements have been made in the development of hydrophobic membranes for membrane distillation (MD). Nonetheless, the environmentally responsible disposal of these membranes poses a critical concern due to their synthetic composition. Herein, an eco-friendly dual-layered biopolymer-based membrane was fabricated for water desalination. The membrane was electrospun from two bio-polymeric layers. The top hydrophobic layer comprises polycaprolactone (PCL) and the bottom hydrophilic layer from cellulose acetate (CA). Additionally, silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) were electrosprayed onto the top layer of the dual-layered PCL/CA membrane to enhance the hydrophobicity. The desalination performance of the modified PCL-SiO2/CA membrane was compared with the unmodified PCL/CA membrane using a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) unit. Results revealed that silica remarkably improves membrane hydrophobicity. The modified PCL-SiO2/CA membrane demonstrated a significant increase in water contact angle of 152.4° compared to 119° for the unmodified membrane. In addition, PCL-SiO2/CA membrane has a smaller average pore size of 0.23 ± 0.16 μm and an exceptional liquid entry pressure of water (LEPw), which is 3.8 times higher than that of PCL/CA membrane. Moreover, PCL-SiO2/CA membrane achieved a durable permeate flux of 15.6 kg/m2.h, while PCL/CA membrane showed unstable permeate flux decreasing approximately from 25 to 12 kg/m2.h over the DCMD test time. Furthermore, the modified PCL-SiO2/CA membrane achieved a high salt rejection value of 99.97% compared to a low value of 86.2% for the PCL/CA membrane after 24 h continuous DCMD operation. In conclusion, the proposed modified PCL-SiO2/CA dual-layer biopolymeric-based membrane has considerable potential to be used as an environmentally friendly membrane for the MD process.

Effective degradation of tetracycline and real pharmaceutical wastewater using novel nanocomposites of biosynthesized ZnO and carbonized toner powder

In this study, novel nanohybrids of biosynthesized zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnetite-nanocarbon (Fe3O4-NC) obtained from the carbonization of toner powder waste were fabricated and investigated for persulfate (PS) activation for the efficient degradation of tetracycline (TCN). The chemical and physical properties of the synthesized catalysts were analyzed using advanced techniques. ZnO/Fe3O4-NC nanohybrid with mass ratio 1:2, respectively in the presence of PS showed the highest TCN removal efficiency compared to the individual components (ZnO and Fe3O4-NC) and other nanohybrids with mass ratios of 1:1 and 2:1. The results indicated that efficient degradation of TCN could be attained at pH 3-7. The optimum operating parameters were TCN concentration of 12.8 mg/L, PS concentration of 7 Mm, and catalyst dose of 0.55 g/L. The high stability of ZnO/Fe3O4-NC (1:2) nanocomposite was assured by the slight drop in TCN degradation percentage from 97.27% to 85.45% after five successive runs under the optimum conditions and the concentrations of leached iron and zinc into the solution were monitored. The quenching experiments explored that the prevailing reactive entities were sulfate radicals. Additionally, the degradation of TCN in various water matrices was investigated, and a degradation pathway was suggested. Further, degradation of real pharmaceutical waste was conducted showing that the removal efficiencies of TCN, total organic carbon (TOC), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 89.79, 80.65, and 78.64% after 2 h under the optimum conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed system (ZnO/Fe3O4-NC (1:2) @ PS) for the degradation of real samples compiled from industrial effluents as well as its inexpensiveness and green nature qualify this system for the full-scale application.

Thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the response surface method for phenol removal from aqueous solution using graphene oxide-polyacrylonitrile nanofiber mats

Phenolic compound even at low concentrations, are considered to be priority pollutants due to their significant toxicity. Electrospinning was used to create a polyacrylonitril (PAN) nanofiber, which was then impregnated with graphene oxide (GO). After a preliminary investigation into the electrospinning parameters (e.g., using various voltages and polymer concentrations), the electrospun nanofibres were tuned, this study evaluated the effectiveness of these materials in removing phenolic compounds from wastewater through adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the synthesized nanofiber mats. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the structure of nanofiber mats was altered by the addition of graphene oxide (GO) in different ratios. Specifically, the surface of the fibres exhibited increased roughness, and the diameter of the fibres also experienced an increase. The average diameter of the fibres was measured to be (134.9 ± 21.43 nm) for the PAN/2.5% GO composite and (198 ± 33.94 nm) for the PAN/5% GO composite. FTIR spectra of the PAN/GO nanocomposites nanofiber displayed distinct peaks associated with graphene oxide (GO). These included a wide peak at 3400 cm-1, related to the presence of hydroxyl (O-H) groups, as well as peaks on 1600 as well as 1000 cm-1, which indicated the existence of epoxy groups. In this study response surface methodology (RSM) was implemented. To enhance the efficiency of removing substances, it is necessary to optimise parameters such as pH, contact time, and dosage of the adsorbent. The optimum pH for removing phenol via all nanofiber mats was determined to be 7, while at a dose of 2 mg dose adsorbents maximum removals for pure PAN, PAN/2.5 GO, and PAN/5 GO were 61.3941, 77.2118, and 92.76139%, respectively. All the adsorbents obey Langmuir isotherm model, and the empirical adsorption findings were fitted with the second-order model kinetically, also non-linear Elovich model. The maximal monolayer adsorption capacities for PAN, PAN/2.5 GO, and PAN/5 GO were found to be 57.4, 66.18, and 69.7 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic studies discovered that the adsorption of phenol on all adsorbents nanofiber mats was exothermic, the adsorption of phenol on nanofiber mats decreases as the temperature increases. All the adsorbents exhibit negative enthalpy and entropy. The PAN/GO composite's superior phenol removal suggested that it could be used as a latent adsorbent for efficient phenol removal from water and wastewater streams.

Selective removal of ammonia from wastewater using Cu(II)-loaded Amberlite IR-120 resin and its catalytic application for removal of dyes

Cationic ligand exchange is one of the most predominant mechanisms for the removal of ammonia from wastewater through complex formation. The complexation technique occurs between the metal ions loaded on the surface of Amberlite IR-120 and ammonia which is present in the medium. Cu(II)-loaded Amberlite IR-120 (R-Cu2+) was prepared and described using FT-IR, TGA, SEM, and EDX techniques. The prepared R-Cu2+ was applied for the elimination of ammonia from an aqueous solution. Different cations such as Co2+ and Ni2+ were loaded onto Amberlite IR-120 to study the impact of counter cation on the removal efficiency of ammonia. The ammonia removal percentage followed the order; R-Cu2+  > R-Ni2+  > R-Co2+. The effects of contact time, pH, initial concentration, temperature, and coexisting ions on the removal of ammonia from wastewater by R-Cu2+ were investigated. The equilibrium adsorbed amount of ammonia was found to be 200 mg/g at pH = 8.6 and 303 K within 60 min using 0.1 g R-Cu2+ and an initial concentration of ammonia of 1060 mg/L. The removal of ammonia using R-Cu2+ obeyed the non-linear plot of both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption of ammonia onto R-Cu2+ was an endothermic and spontaneous process. The time-adsorption data followed the pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. Moreover, the resulting product (R-Cu(II)-amine composite) from the adsorption process exhibited high catalytic activity and could be low-cost material for the elimination of dyes such as aniline blue (AB), methyl green (MG), and methyl violet 2B (MV2B) from wastewater.

Eco-friendly PVA-LYS fibers for gold nanoparticle recovery from water and their catalytic performance

In this work, we grafted lysine on PVA electrospun fibers, using a green preparation technique. The resulting fiber mats were proposed for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) removal from water. The efficiency of three fibers with different lysine amounts (10, 20, and 30%) was investigated. The incorporation of amino groups in PVA fibers was firstly proved by FTIR, SEM, and elemental analysis, confirming the presence of lysine. Among the three different fibers, PVA-LYS 30% has shown the best removal efficiency, reaching 65%, at pH equal to 5. Adsorption isotherms were studied and showed that the Langmuir model is the best model fitting our experimental results, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 20.1 mg g^-1. Metal-ligand interactions and electrostatic attraction between protonated amino groups of lysine on the fibers and negatively charged, citrate capped, AuNPs are the main proposed mechanisms for AuNP adsorption on the fibers. Sustainability of AuNPs adsorbed on these fibers has been checked through their reuse as catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. The process was completed within 60 min, and their reusability showed more than 99% efficiency after 5 reduction cycles. Our results prove that green PVA-LYS fibers can extract nanoparticles from water, as low cost-effective and eco-friendly adsorbent, and contribute to the promotion of a circular economy approach, through their reuse as catalyst in the reduction of pollutants.

Role of immobilised Chlorophyta algae in form of calcium alginate beads for the removal of phenol: isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic study

In this work, sodium alginate-immobilised Chlorophyta algae were evaluated for phenol uptake. The algae/alginate bead (AAB) characteristics were analysed by means of BET-BJH, FTIR, and SEM-EDX methods, while the adsorption performance of AABs with respect to phenol removal was investigated using batch studies. The parameters found to affect the biosorption capacity of AABs included pH, contact time, initial phenol concentration, adsorbent dosage, stirring rate, particle size, and temperature, with the optimal operating variables identified as a pH of 6, an initial phenol concentration of 50 mg/L, AAB dosage of 5 g/L, and a 200 rpm stirring rate. The adsorption process in such cases reached equilibrium within 120 min, demonstrating a maximum phenol elimination capacity of 9.56 mg/g at 30 °C. The isotherm and kinetic models used to determine this were evaluated using the Chi-square test (X²), the coefficient of determination (R²), and the value of equilibrium capacity, with results that revealed that the Freundlich isotherm provides the best fit for the relevant equilibrium data, as shown by its high R² value (0.96) and low X² value (1.16135); the theoretical data produced by that model were thus closer to the experimental data than that from the Langmuir model. Kinetic analysis showed that the phenol adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters were thus explored, revealing that the phenol biosorption process is based on spontaneous physisorption with an exothermic reaction due to negative (ΔG°) and (ΔH°) values. The low cost, natural origin, biodegradability, and eco-friendliness of algae/alginate bead sorbents also make them ideally suited for phenol removal in aqueous solutions.

Effective decontamination of methylene blue from aqueous solutions using novel nano-magnetic biochar from green pea peels

The conversion of agricultural waste into high-value carbon products has been an attractive area in waste management strategy. This study highlighted the synthesis and effectiveness of green pea peels (GPP), green pea biochar (GPBC), and nano-ferromagnetic green pea biochar (NFGPBC) by the ferrous/ferric co-precipitation synthesis method for eliminating cationic dyes molecules from solutions. The morphological, physicochemical, and structural properties of GPP, GPBC, and NFGPBC were approved by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Emission Microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Bruneau Emmett Teller (BET), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM) analysis confirmed the NFGPBC magnetization performance. The capacity of each adsorbent for methylene blue removal was evaluated at various parameters of material dosage (50-250 mg/150 mL), pH (2-12), initial concentration (50-250 mg/L), contact time (0-90 min) and temperature (20-60 °C). The three developed adsorbent materials GPP, GPBC, and NFGPBC, possessed reasonable BET surface areas of 0.6836, 372.54, and 147.88 m2g-1, and the corresponding monolayer adsorption capacities of 163.93, 217.40, and 175.44 mg/g, respectively. The superior performances of GPBC and NFGPBC were due to their increased surface area compared with the parent green pea peels (GPP). The results from adsorption kinetics studies of all prepared materials were pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetics models. The thermodynamic parameters exhibited MB sorption's favorability, spontaneity, and endothermic nature. The NFGPBC material experienced Vander Waal forces, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions as predominant modes of the solid-liquid interaction. The regeneration, recycling, and reusability of the synthesized GPP, GPBC, and NFGPBC performed at five adsorption cycles revealed that NFGPBC demonstrated excellent cyclical performances attaining a minimum 8.9% loss in capacity due to paramagnetic properties. Thus, NFGPBC is a green, efficient, and eco-friendly material recommended for large-scale production and application in wastewater.

In Situ Generating CaCO3 Nanoparticles Reinforced Nonflammable Calcium Alginate Biocomposite Fiber

Petroleum-based synthetic flame-proof fiber releases toxic volatile organic compounds in thermal decomposition process and has other problems, like tickling feeling and high density. A natural polysaccharide, calcium alginate, is an intrinsic fire-resistant biodegradable material, but its limited mechanical performance prevents it from being a practical flame-retardant fabric. To address this problem, Na₂CO₃ was doped into alginate spinning solution to obtain in situ generating CaCO₃ nanoparticle-reinforced alginate fiber by microfluidic spinning technique. Comparative analysis illustrated that incorporation of 0.50% Na₂CO₃ into the fiber greatly improved its mechanical performance; meanwhile, in situ generated CaCO₃ nanoparticles also throttled oxygen and heat flow in burning, endowing the fiber with excellent flame retardancy. The prepared composite fiber released less heat, smoke, and toxic volatile organic compounds in burning, which reduced the fire hazard. The formed residue char and pyrolysis products functioned as the physical barrier and displayed a synergistic effect to inhibit oxygen and heat transmission and impede the further combustion. All of the results demonstrate that the obtained fiber exhibits a good mechanical and flame-retardant performance, making it an ideal candidate as a fire-protection textile.

Electro Fluid Dynamics: A Route to Design Polymers and Composites for Biomedical and Bio-Sustainable Applications

In the last two decades, several processes have been explored for the development of micro and/or nanostructured substrates by sagely physically and/or chemically manipulating polymer materials. These processes have to be designed to overcome some of the limitations of the traditional ones in terms of feasibility, reproducibility, and sustainability. Herein, the primary aim of this work is to focus on the enormous potential of using a high voltage electric field to manipulate polymers from synthetic and/or natural sources for the fabrication of different devices based on elementary units, i.e., fibers or particles, with different characteristic sizes—from micro to nanoscale. Firstly, basic principles and working mechanisms will be introduced in order to correlate the effect of selected process parameters (i.e., an applied voltage) on the dimensional features of the structures. Secondly, a comprehensive overview of the recent trends and potential uses of these processes will be proposed for different biomedical and bio-sustainable application areas.

Arsenic in drinking water: overview of removal strategies and role of chitosan biosorbent for its remediation

Accessibility to clean drinking water often remains a crucial task at times. Among other water pollutants, arsenic is considered a more lethal contaminant and has become a serious threat to human life globally. This review discussed the sources, chemistry, distribution, and toxicity of arsenic and various conventional technologies that are in option for its removal from the water system. Nowadays, biosorbents are considered the best option for arsenic-contaminated water treatment. We have mainly focused on the need and potential of biosorbents especially the role of chitosan-based composites for arsenic removal. The chitosan-based sorbents are economically more efficient in terms of their, low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, eco-friendly nature, and reusability. The role of various modification techniques, such as physical and chemical, has also been evaluated to improve the physicochemical properties of biosorbent. The importance of adsorption kinetic and isotherm models and the role of solution pH and pH_PZC for arsenic uptake from the polluted water have also been investigated. Some other potential applications of chitosan-based biosorbents have also been discussed along with its sustainability aspect. Finally, some suggestions have been highlighted for further improvements in this field.

Impact of Green Chitosan Nanoparticles Fabricated from Shrimp Processing Waste as a Source of Nano Nitrogen Fertilizers on the Yield Quantity and Quality of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Cultivars

Waste from crustaceans has adverse effects on the environment. In this respect, shrimp waste was valorized for producing chitosan nanoparticles as a source for eco-friendly nano-nitrogen fertilizer. The application of nano-nitrogen fertilizers is a valuable alternative approach in agriculture due to its potential for reducing the application of mineral nitrogen fertilizers and increasing yield quality and quantity, thereby helping to reduce the worldwide food shortage. Chitosan nanoparticles were foliar sprayed at three volumes (0, 7, and 14 L/ha) and compared with mineral nitrogen fertilizer (M-N) sprayed at three volumes (0, 120, and 240 kg N/ha) and their combination on two wheat cultivars (Misr-1 and Gemaiza-11) during two consecutive seasons (2019/2020 and 2020/2021) in order to evaluate the agronomic response. The synthesized chitosan nanoparticles displayed characteristic bands of both Nan-N and urea/chitosan from 500–4000 cm−1. They are stable and have a huge surface area of 73.21 m2 g−1. The results revealed significant differences among wheat cultivars, fertilization applications, individual or combined, and their interactions for yield-contributing traits. Foliar application of nano-nitrogen fertilizer at 14 L/ha combined with mineral fertilizer at 240 kg/ha significantly increased total chlorophyll content by 41 and 31% compared to control; concerning plant height, the two cultivars recorded the tallest plants (86.2 and 86.5 cm) compared to control. On the other hand, the heaviest 1000-grain weight (55.8 and 57.4 g) was recorded with treatment of 120 kg Mn-N and 14 L Nan-N/ha compared to the control (47.6 and 45.5 g). The Misr-1 cultivar achieved the highest values for grain yield and nitrogen (1.30 and 1.91 mg/L) and potassium (9.87 and 9.81 mg/L) in the two studied seasons when foliarly sprayed with the combination of 120 kg Mn-N/ha + 14 L Nan-N/ha compared to the Gemaiza-11 cultivar. It can be concluded that Misr-1 exhibited higher levels of total chlorophyll content, spike length, 100-grain weight, grain yield in kg/ha, and nitrogen and potassium. However, Gemaiza-11 displayed higher biomass and straw yield values, plant height, and sodium concentration values. It could be economically recommended to use the application of 120 kg Mn-N/ha + 14 L Nan-N/ha on the Misr-1 cultivar to achieve the highest crop yield.

Evaluation of Zn Adenine-Based Bio-MOF for Efficient Remediation of Different Types of Dyes

As an eco-friendly material, Zn-adeninate bio-metal-organic framework (bio-MOF) was investigated as an efficient adsorbent for both anionic and cationic dyes. The adsorption capability of the synthesized Zn-adeninate bio-MOF was confirmed by its notable surface area of 52.62 m2 g−1 and total pore volume of 0.183 cm3 g−1. The bio-MOF adsorption profiles of anionic direct red 81 (DR-81) and cationic methylene blue (MB) dyes were investigated under different operating parameters. The optimum dosages of Zn-adeninate bio-MOF were 0.5 g L−1 and 1 g L−1 for MB and DR-81 decolorization, respectively. The pHPZC of Zn-adeninate bio-MOF was 7.2, and maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 132.15 mg g–1 for MB, which decreased to 82.54 mg g–1 for DR-81 dye. Thermodynamic data indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the decolorization processes. Additionally, the adsorption processes were in agreement with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The synthesized Zn-adeninate bio-MOF could be reused several times with high decolorization ability. These findings demonstrated that the synthesized Zn bio-MOF is an effective and promising adsorbent material for the removal of both cationic and anionic dyes from polluted water.

Fabrication, Property and Application of Calcium Alginate Fiber: A Review

As a natural linear polysaccharide, alginate can be gelled into calcium alginate fiber and exploited for functional material applications. Owing to its high hygroscopicity, biocompatibility, nontoxicity and non-flammability, calcium alginate fiber has found a variety of potential applications. This article gives a comprehensive overview of research on calcium alginate fiber, starting from the fabrication technique of wet spinning and microfluidic spinning, followed by a detailed description of the moisture absorption ability, biocompatibility and intrinsic fire-resistant performance of calcium alginate fiber, and briefly introduces its corresponding applications in biomaterials, fire-retardant and other advanced materials that have been extensively studied over the past decade. This review assists in better design and preparation of the alginate bio-based fiber and puts forward new perspectives for further study on alginate fiber, which can benefit the future development of the booming eco-friendly marine biomass polysaccharide fiber.

Novel aspartic-based bio-MOF adsorbent for effective anionic dye decontamination from polluted water

In this study, a cost-effective powdered Zn l-aspartic acid bio-metal organic framework (Zn l-Asp bio-MOF) was reported as an efficient adsorbent for Direct Red 81 (DR-81) as an anionic organic dye. The prepared bio-MOF was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), surface area analysis (BET), and thermal gravimetrical analysis (TGA). The resulting bio-MOF has a large surface area (180.43 m2 g-1) and large mesopore volume (0.144 cm3 g-1), as well as good chemical inertness and mechanical stability. The optimum dosage from the Zn l-Asp bio-MOF was 1.0 g L-1 at pH = 7 for 95.3% adsorption of 10 ppm DR-81 after 45 min. Thermodynamic analysis results demonstrated that the decontamination processes were done with spontaneous, thermodynamically, and exothermic nature onto the fabricated bio-MOF. Kinetic parameters were well-fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the adsorption process was described by the Freundlich isotherm. The adsorption data proved that Zn l-Asp bio-MOF is an effective adsorbent for DR-81 from aqueous solutions with high stability and recycling ability for eight cycles, as well as the easy regeneration of the sorbent.

Assessment of antimicrobial, cytotoxicity, and antiviral impact of a green zinc oxide/activated carbon nanocomposite

This work deals with the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles/activated carbon (ZnO NPs/AC) nanocomposites with different weight ratios (3:1, 1:1, and 1:3), where the antimicrobial, antiviral, and cytotoxicity impact of the formulated nanocomposites were evaluated versus the crude ZnO and AC samples. The formula (3:1; designated Z3C1) exhibited the utmost bactericidal effect against Gram positive group, unicellular and filamentous fungi. Regarding Gram negative group, the sample (Z3C1) was remarkably effective against Klebsiella pneumonia, unlike the case of Escherichia coli. Moreover, the whole samples showed negligible cytotoxicity against the human WI38 cell line, where the most brutality (4%) was exerted by 1000 µg/mL of the formula (Z1C3). Whilst, the formula (Z3C1) exerted the apical inhibition impact against Herpes simplex (HSV1) virus. Consequently, the synthesized (Z3C1) nanocomposite was sorted out to be fully characterized via different physicochemical techniques including FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, Zeta potential, TGA, and BET. XRD indicated a predominance of the crystalline pattern of ZnO NPs over the amorphous AC, while the FTIR chart confirmed an immense combination between the ZnO NPs and AC. SEM, TEM, and size distribution images illustrated that the fabricated ZnO NPs/AC was in the nanoscale size swung from 30 to 70 nm. The distinctive surface area of composite material, recording 66.27 m²/g, clearly disclosed its bioactivity toward different bacterial, fungal, and virus species.

Development of green and sustainable smart biochromic and therapeutic bandage using red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. Var. capitata) extract encapsulated into alginate nanoparticles

Novel multifunctional wound dressing with the ability to protect, cure and sense the healing process, was developed. Red-cabbage extract has been reported to exhibit bioactive compounds with the ability to function as antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral agent, as well as a natural pH-sensory chromophoric material. An anthocyanin extract was prepared from Red-cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. Var. capitata). The anthocyanins extract was encapsulated into calcium alginate in the presence of potash alum mordant, which was then applied to the surface of the cotton gauze. Red-cabbage based anthocyanin chromophoric extract was encapsulated at different concentrations into alginate-based hydrogel and immobilized into cotton gauze to provide a smart therapeutic pH-responsive wound dress to function as an antimicrobial and biochromic matrix providing a comfortable dress sensor to monitor the wound status. Decreasing the pH of a wound mimic solution caused a blue shift from 579 to 437 nm. The anthocyanin spectroscopic probe's halochromic activity demonstrated a colorimetric change from purple to pink, which was critical to the dyed cotton diagnostic assay's biochromic performance. The colorimetric parameters of the prepared dressing sensor were proved by UV-Vis absorbance and CIE Lab coordinates. Both mechanical and morphological properties of the prepared dressing were studied using different analytical methods. The effect of anthocyanin concentration on the mechanical, water vapor permeability, water absorption and morphological properties of the wound dressing were investigated. No substantial flaws in air-permeability or bend length were detected after dyeing. The colored cotton gauze samples were tested for their high colorfastness. The cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of the prepared biochromic cotton gauze were explored. The dyed cotton samples exhibited no cytotoxicity and improved antimicrobial activity with increasing the anthocyanin ratio on cotton surface.

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) on Biopolymers and Hydrogels for Biotechnological Applications-Possibilities and Limits

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is one of the microscopic techniques with the highest lateral resolution. It can usually be applied in air or even in liquids, enabling the investigation of a broader range of samples than scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which is mostly performed in vacuum. Since it works by following the sample surface based on the force between the scanning tip and the sample, interactions have to be taken into account, making the AFM of irregular samples complicated, but on the other hand it allows measurements of more physical parameters than pure topography. This is especially important for biopolymers and hydrogels used in tissue engineering and other biotechnological applications, where elastic properties, surface charges and other parameters influence mammalian cell adhesion and growth as well as many other effects. This review gives an overview of AFM modes relevant for the investigations of biopolymers and hydrogels and shows several examples of recent applications, focusing on the polysaccharides chitosan, alginate, carrageenan and different hydrogels, but depicting also a broader spectrum of materials on which different AFM measurements are reported in the literature.

Multifunctional Membranes-A Versatile Approach for Emerging Pollutants Removal

This paper presents a comprehensive literature review surveying the most important polymer materials used for electrospinning processes and applied as membranes for the removal of emerging pollutants. Two types of processes integrate these membrane types: separation processes, where electrospun polymers act as a support for thin film composites (TFC), and adsorption as single or coupled processes (photo-catalysis, advanced oxidation, electrochemical), where a functionalization step is essential for the electrospun polymer to improve its properties. Emerging pollutants (EPs) released in the environment can be efficiently removed from water systems using electrospun membranes. The relevant results regarding removal efficiency, adsorption capacity, and the size and porosity of the membranes and fibers used for different EPs are described in detail.

A review on the applications of electrospun chitosan nanofibers for the cancer treatment

In recent years, the incidence of cancer is increasing every day due to poor quality of life (industrialization of life). Therefore, the treatment of cancer has received much attention from therapists. So far, many anticancer drugs have been used to treat cancer patents. However, the direct use of the anticancer drugs has the adverse side effects for patents and several limitations to treat process. Natural chitosan nanofibers prepared by electrospinning method have unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity, suitable mechanical properties, nontoxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, biorenewable, low immunogenicity, better clinical functionality, analogue to extracellular model, and easy production in large scale. Therefore, this bio-polymer is a very suitable case to deliver of the anti-cancer drugs to treat cancer patents. In this review summarizes the electrospinning synthesis of chitosan and its therapeutic application for the various cancer treatment.

Biocompatible MIP-202 Zr-MOF tunable sorbent for cost-effective decontamination of anionic and cationic pollutants from waste solutions

This reported work aims to fabricate an eco-friendly Zr bio-based MOF and assessment its adsorption efficiency towards the cationic and anionic dye pollutants including methylene blue (MB) and direct red 81 (DR-81), respectively. Also, its adsorption tendency for the highly toxic heavy metal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was compared with dyes. The adsorption performance of bio-MOF showed that the maximum monolayer adsorption capacities were recorded as 79.799 mg/g for MB, 36.071 mg/g for DR-81, and 19.012 mg/g for Cr(VI). Meanwhile, the optimum dosage of as-synthesized MIP-202 bio-MOF was 0.5, 1, and 2 g L^-1 for MB, DR-81, and Cr(VI), respectively. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated the spontaneous, thermodynamically, and endothermic nature of the decontamination processes onto the fabricated Zr bio-based MOF. The adsorption data were fitted by Langmuir isotherm model compared with Freundlich and Temkin models for all studied water pollutants. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model was a fit model for description of the adsorption kinetics of the different cationic and anionic pollutants onto Zr bio-based MOF. These outcomes indicated that Zr bio-based MOF has potential application for adsorption of different types of industrial water pollutants including cationic and anionic dyes and heavy metals.
