Abstract
Salinity was considered to have effects on the characteristics, performance microbial communities of aerobic granular sludge. This study investigated granulation process with gradual increase of salt under different gradients. Two identical sequencing batch reactors were operated, while the influent of Ra and Rb was subjected to stepwise increments of NaCl concentrations (0-4 g/L and 0-10 g/L). The presence of filamentous bacteria may contribute to granules formed under lower salinity conditions, potentially leading to granules fragmentation. Excellent removal efficiency achieved in both reactors although there was a small accumulation of nitrite in Rb at later stages. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) in Ra were 95.31%, 93.70% and 88.66%, while the corresponding removal efficiencies in Rb were 94.19%, 89.79% and 80.74%. Salinity stimulated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion and enriched EPS producing bacteria to help maintain the integrity and stability of the aerobic granules. Heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria were responsible for NH4+-N and NO2--N oxidation of salinity systems and large number of denitrifying bacteria were detected, which ensure the high removal efficiency of TN in the systems.

Evaluation of aerobic granulation performance bioaugmented with the auto-aggregating bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri strain XL-2 with heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification capacity. Abstract
In this study, the possibility of an auto-aggregating bacterium Pseudomonas strain XL-2 with heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification capacity for improving granulation and nitrogen removal was evaluated. The results showed that the supplementation of strain XL-2 promoted granulation, making R1 (experimental group with strain XL-2) dominated by granules at 14 d, which was 12 days earlier than R2 (control group without strain XL-2). This was attributed to the promotion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion, particularly proteins by adding strain XL-2, thereby improving the hydrophobicity of sludge and altering the proteins secondary structures to facilitate aggregation. Meanwhile, adding strain XL-2 improved simultaneous nitrification and denitrification efficiency of R1. Microbial community analysis indicated that strain XL-2 successfully proliferated in aerobic granule sludge and might induce the enrichment of genera such as Flavobacterium and Paracoccus that were favorable for EPS secretion and denitrification, jointly promoting granulation and enhancing nitrogen removal efficiency.

Abstract
Fecal sludge and septage (FSS) are more concentrated than domestic wastewater which makes it difficult to treat and requires immediate attention otherwise, it leads towards serious environmental problems. In this review, an attempt has been made to highlight and discuss the various aspects of fecal sludge and septage management (FSSM) like its generation, characterization, containment, transportation, treatment, reuse and disposal. A comparison of existing fecal sludge treatment plants and technologies has been reviewed considering land requirement, capital cost, operation and maintenance cost, advantages and disadvantages. Based on the existing practices and review, a techno-economic treatment scheme is designed and proposed for solid-liquid separation and treatment of FSS with resource-recovery as fertilizer, material for construction, energy and treated effluent. To make FSSM, self-sustainable, a revenue generation model is also delineated for the researchers and decision-makers to evaluate its feasibility and implementation, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries.

Influence of temperature on aerobic granular sludge formation and stability treating municipal wastewater with high nitrogen loadings. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2022; 212:113578. Abstract
This study investigated the influence of temperature (20 and 30 °C) on the formation and stability of aerobic granules in sequential batch reactors (SBR). Therefore, two lab-scale SBRs operated at 20 and 30 °C (SBR20 and SBR30) were used. The reactors were fed with municipal wastewater (CODt:TN:TP 100:15:1.7), leading to mean organic loading rates (OLR) of 1.3 ± 0.4 kgCODt m-3 day-1. Both reactors had the same height/diameter ratio of 4.2 and were inoculated with activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The operational conditions were also the same for both temperatures and lasted in stable process parameters for over 100 days. By optimizing the aeration and oxygen concentration, a high removal efficiency of NH4-N (∼99%) and COD (∼90%) was achieved in both reactors, despite the poor C:N:P ratio at the influent. Furthermore, a relatively low oxygen concentration of 2 mg L-1 was defined as the set point for the control strategy. Nevertheless, granulation at 30 °C was significantly faster, resulting in more stable sludge volume index (SVI) values (SVI10/SVI30 < 1.1). The granules formed at 30 °C were also larger, more compact, and considerably more stable against system disturbances. However, at higher temperatures, larger granules might be required for nitrate removal because of the increased oxygen diffusion rates. Finally, microbiological 16S rRNA gene amplicon analysis for both systems indicated major differences relatively to the inoculum sludge only for nitrogen-degrading organisms.

Abstract
A conventional sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was upgraded using fixed biofilm carriers with a specific surface area around 18 m2 m-3 . The upgraded SBR was investigated to remove phenol from high strength wastewater operated under various operational conditions. The operational conditions used were variable volume exchange ratio (VER) up to 75%, hydraulic retention time (HRT) from (10.7-21.3 hr), aeration time (from 2 to 8 hr), and initial phenol concentration up to 600 mg L-1 . It was found that the upgraded SBR increased the removal efficiencies of biological oxygen demand (BOD5 ), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solids (TSS) by about 10% using high strength wastewater without phenol compared to SBR. Furthermore, the removal rate of phenol for the upgraded SBR was higher than conventional SBR by about 18% at 600 mg L- of initial phenol concentration under the same operational conditions. Compared to the conventional SBR, the upgraded version reduced the aeration step by 25% and achieved higher removal efficiency of phenol. Moreover, it reduced the excess sludge by about 23% and enhanced its properties by lowering the sludge volume index (SVI) by about 33%. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Upgrading conventional SBR by adding biofilm carriers is necessary for wastewater treatment with high strength wastewater. The upgraded SBR has a higher resistance toward phenol compound due to the presence of the attached biofilm. The upgraded SBR enhances sludge settling properties, decreases the amount of excess sludge, and also reduces the start-up period. The number of cycles per day by upgraded SBR was more than the conventional SBR by 15%. The upgraded SBR is an effective system and has good operational stability.
