Adsorption-photocatalytic processes for removal of pentachlorophenol contaminant using FeNi3/SiO2/ZnO magnetic nanocomposite under simulated solar light irradiation

The utility of ultraviolet beam in advanced oxidation-reduction processes: a review on the mechanism of processes and possible production free radicals

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and advanced reduction processes (ARPs) are a set of chemical treatment procedures designed to eliminate organic (sometimes inorganic) contamination in water and wastewater by producing free reactive radicals (FRR). UV irradiation is one of the factors that are effectively used in oxidation-reduction processes. Not only does the UV beam cause the photolysis of contamination, but it also leads to the product of FRR by affecting oxidants-reductant, and the pollutant decomposition occurs by FRR. UV rays produce active radical species indirectly in an advanced redox process by affecting an oxidant (O3, H2O2), persulfate (PS), or reducer (dithionite, sulfite, sulfide, iodide, ferrous). Produced FRR with high redox potential (including oxidized or reduced radicals) causes detoxification and degradation of target contaminants by attacking them. In this review, it was found that ultraviolet radiation is one of the important and practical parameters in redox processes, which can be used to control a wide range of impurities.

Advanced oxidation processes for phthalate esters removal in aqueous solution: a systematic review

This study addresses a systematic review of the scientific literature to evaluate the most common advanced oxidation processes (AOP) for the removal of phthalate esters (PE) in aqueous matrices. Six AOP were reviewed for PE degradation such as processes based on photolysis, Fenton, ozonation and sulfate radicals ( SO 4 • - ), combined AOP and other processes. The PE degradation efficiencies by AOP processes ranged from 40.3 to 100%. In the reviewed literature, an initial PE concentration within 0.04-250 mg/L was applied. The H₂O₂ concentrations used in the UV/H₂O₂ process and O₃ concentrations in ozonation-based processes ranged between 0.85-1,360.6 mg/L and 2-4,971 mg/L, respectively. Based on the reported results, the PE oxidation data fit well to the pseudo-first order kinetic model. A review of the studies revealed that many oxidant species are produced in the AOP, including hydroxyl radicals (^•OH), SO 4 • - , superoxide radical anions ( O 2 - • ), hydroperoxyl radicals (HO₂ ^•), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and singlet oxygen (O₂). Among these oxidants, ^•OH play a key role in the degradation of PE. However, SO 4 • - are more effective and efficient than ^•OH since SO 4 • - has a higher oxidation power (E = 2.5-3.1 V) compared to ^•OH radicals (E = 1.8-2.7 V). In different AOP processes, the aromatic rings of PE are destroyed by ^•OH and produce intermediates such as phthalic acid (C₆H₄(CO₂H)₂), benzoic acid ethyl ester (C₉H₁₀O₂), 2, 5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (C₇H₆O₄), formic acid (CH₂O₂), acetic acid (CH₃COOH), and oxalic acid (C₂H₂O₄), among some others. Until now, limited data have been reported on PE toxicity assessment. The reviewed literature has shown that AOP can be used effectively to degrade PE from aqueous matrices. However, this systematic study suggests focusing more on the evaluation of the toxicity of the effluent resulting from AOP for the decomposition of PE in future studies.

An Overview of Photocatalytic Membrane Degradation Development

Environmental pollution has become a worldwide issue. Rapid industrial and agricultural practices have increased organic contaminants in water supplies. Hence, many strategies have been developed to address this concern. In order to supply clean water for various applications, high-performance treatment technology is required to effectively remove organic and inorganic contaminants. Utilizing photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) has shown promise as a viable alternative process in the water and wastewater industry due to its efficiency, low cost, simplicity, and low environmental impact. PMRs are commonly categorized into two main categories: those with the photocatalyst suspended in solution and those with the photocatalyst immobilized in/on a membrane. Herein, the working and fouling mechanisms in PMRs membranes are investigated; the interplay of fouling and photocatalytic activity and the development of fouling prevention strategies are elucidated; and the significance of photocatalysis in membrane fouling mechanisms such as pore plugging and cake layering is thoroughly explored.

Dynamic control of pentachlorophenol photodegradation process using P25/PDA/BiOBr through regulation of photo-induced active substances and chemiluminescence

Photodegradation is a new approach for the removal of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Photooxidation degradation (using hydroxyl radicals) exhibits better performance to remove PCP than photoreduction degradation, but the former will lead to an increase in the production of toxic by-products such as tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCBQ). Thus, a new strategy is required to enhance PCP photodegradation and simultaneously inhibit toxic intermediates production. Herein, TiO₂ (P25)/polydopamine (PDA)/BiOBr was synthesized and used to photodegrade PCP. Based on the relative position of the CB and VB of P25 and BiOBr, and PDA as an electron transfer mediator, a high number of holes, electrons, and superoxide anions were produced instead of hydroxyl radicals. The photocatalytic activity of P25/PDA/BiOBr exhibited the best performance among as-prepared samples, reaching a k_(pcp) value of 0.4 min^-1 (20 μM PCP) under UV light irradiation within 10 min. According to chemiluminescence and acute toxicity assays, relative to P25, the toxic intermediates of TCBQ and trichlorohydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (OH-TrCBQ) generation was greatly reduced over P25/PDA/BiOBr, with a lack of toxic product generation during PCP photodegradation process. These findings provide an alternative strategy to achieve greener and more efficient organic pollutant photodegradation.
