Investing in green, sustaining the planet: The role of fintech in promoting corporate green investment in the Chinese energy industry

In recent years, fintech has rapidly developed on a global scale, bringing about significant transformations across various industries. Particularly in the energy sector, the potential of fintech to promote corporate green investment has increasingly become a focus. As the energy industry accounts for a significant proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions, guiding companies in implementing green investment has become an important issue for environmental protection and sustainable development. However, previous studies have rarely systematically investigated the influence of fintech on corporate green investment in the energy industry and the mechanisms involved. Hence, this study aims to bridge this research gap within the context of China. By utilizing valid survey data from 466 corporations in the Chinese energy industry and the method of structural equation modeling, the results indicate that: (1) Fintech can promote corporate green investment in the energy industry. (2) Fintech can promote corporate data-driven decision-making capability, information transparency, and sustainable development strategy. (3) Data-driven decision-making capability, information transparency, and sustainable development strategy can also promote corporate green investment in the energy industry. (4) Mediation analysis reveals that data-driven decision-making capability, information transparency, and sustainable development strategy each play a mediating role in the impact of fintech on corporate green investment. (5) Comparative analysis of the mediation effects indicates that there is a certain degree of difference among these three variables' mediating effects, but it did not reach a statistically significant level. This study provides rich insights for business practices, encouraging companies to strengthen their focus on green investment in the fintech era and offer guidance and recommendations to relevant stakeholders, thereby providing practical guidance for corporate green transformation and sustainable development. Finally, this research also contributes to policy development and optimization.

Unveiling environmental excellence: the confluence of green Industrial Internet of Things, circular economy practices and dynamic capabilities in manufacturing firms

Purpose

To meet environmental performance (EP) goals, this study aims to identify the complex interaction between green Industrial Internet of Things (GIIoT), circular economic practices (CEPs) and dynamic capabilities (DC). This study analyzes how technological, operational and cultural compatibilities enhance GIIoT adoption.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from diverse Chinese manufacturing firms (n = 339) through a quantitative survey. The research model was proposed, and hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Moreover, the robustness of the structural model is further tested using Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis and importance performance map analysis.

Findings

The empirical results indicate that higher organizational compatibilities boost GIIoT adoption and EP. DC was assessed as a higher-order construct to examine its mediation of GIIoT adoption and EP. DC positively mediates GIIoT adoption-EP. Similarly, CEP’s positive impact on EP, partially mediating the relationship between GIIoT adoption and EP, has also been proved.

Originality/value

This research bridges current understanding and contributes useful insights for fostering environmental sustainability inside manufacturing firms and advances the theoretical understanding of technology adoption, sustainable development and dynamic capacity theory. It illuminates the way forward to harmonize and successfully integrate technology, CEP and EP. This research advances the area and gives decision-makers practical advice for creating sustainable and technologically sophisticated organizations.

FinTech revolution in mineral management: Exploring the nexus between technology adoption and sustainable Resource utilization in an industry 4.0 context

This study investigates the impact of FinTech adoption on sustainable mineral management policies in Australia within the context of Industry 4.0, using quarterly data from 1990Q1 to 2022Q4. Employing the ARDL-Bounds testing approach, Granger causality analysis, and innovation accounting matrix, the research finds a short-term positive association between FinTech adoption, technological readiness, and green mineral extraction. However, both in the short and long run, investment in sustainable mining technologies, government support for FinTech in mining, and environmental compliance exhibit a negative relationship with resource management. Bidirectional causality is observed between regulatory support for mining FinTech, technological finance solutions, and environmentally conscious mineral practices, while unidirectional causality exists from FinTech adoption to sustainable mining practices. Impulse response functions offer insights into the future impact of variables on eco-conscious mining policies, indicating positive influences from FinTech adoption, government support for FinTech in mining, and technological adaptability over the next decade. Conversely, eco-friendly mining investments, environmental conformity, and social license to operate will impact sustainable mineral utilization. Variance decomposition analysis highlights the most significant shocks on eco-friendly resource management over the next ten years, emphasizing the role of sustainable mining technologies, FinTech adoption, and public support for mining endeavours. In the transition to Industry 4.0, this research provides crucial insights for responsibly utilizing Australia's natural resources by leveraging financial technology and technological readiness.
