Digital financial inclusion, environmental quality, and economic development: the contributions of financial development and investments in OECD countries

Digital financial inclusion, population structure, and consumption upgrades: Evidence from China

This study empirically tests the role of population structure in the process of digital financial inclusion empowering the upgrading of consumption structure by taking 248 prefecture-level cities between 2013 and 2019 as the research objects. The results of this study are as follows. First, digital financial inclusion will expand the scale of consumption. Second, digital financial inclusion can promote the upgrading of consumption structure. Third, population structure will regulate the promotional effect of digital financial inclusion on the upgrading of consumption structure. Specifically, child dependency ratio has a positive moderating effect on digital financial inclusion-driven the upgrading of consumption structure. Moreover, sex ratio has a positive moderating effect on digital financial inclusion-driven the upgrading of consumption structure. Therefore, it is suggested that vigorously promote and develop digital financial inclusion, implement and improve the three-child policy, and expand the elderly consumer industry to better promote consumption upgrading.

Impact of energy imports, renewable electricity production, alternative, and nuclear energy sources on natural gas resource rents

The world faces several problems related to natural gas resource rents and energy production from renewable sources. One of the main problems is the influence of energy imports, manufacturing exports, and alternative energy sources on natural gas and electricity production from renewable sources. Energy imports, manufacturing exports, and alternative energy sources can impact natural gas and electricity production. This paper examines natural gas resource rents and electricity production from renewable sources nexus from 1971 to 2021, using energy imports, manufacturer's exports, and alternative energy sources in China. Electricity production from renewable sources and manufacturing exports are negatively associated with natural gas resource rents. Energy imports and alternative energy sources positively relate to natural gas resource rents in China. These results suggest that the energy sector in China is highly interconnected and that policies that seek to promote renewable energy sources and other alternatives can positively affect natural gas resource rents. China needs to develop an energy policy considering the policy implications of energy imports and natural gas resource rents. Such a policy should focus on increasing domestic production, reducing energy imports, and ensuring adequate revenue from natural gas resource rents. Additionally, regulations could be implemented that support the development of alternative energy sources, such as requiring utilities to purchase a certain percentage of their power from renewable sources.

The role of green finance and governance effectiveness in the impact of renewable energy investment on CO2 emissions in BRICS economies

In the context of sustainable development, this study investigates the intricate dynamics among good governance, renewable energy investment, and green finance in BRICS nations. The aim of the study is to assess how green finance and governance effectiveness moderate the impact of renewable energy investment on CO2 emissions. Utilizing the Cross-Sectional Autoregressive Distributed Lag (CS-ARDL) model, a meticulous analysis spanning two decades was conducted to unravel the relationships among key variables and CO2 emissions. The findings underscore a nuanced interplay where renewable energy investments, synergized with robust governance and strategic green finance, significantly mitigate CO2 emissions, contributing to sustainable economic development. However, the study reveals non-linear relationships, highlighting the necessity for optimal allocation and strategic planning to maximize environmental benefits. In the short-run, a government effectiveness policy threshold that should be attained in order for renewable energy investment to reduce CO2 emissions is provided. In the long-run, the negative responsiveness of CO2 emissions to renewable energy investment is further consolidated by green finance. Moreover, enhancing renewable energy investment in the long run is positive for environmental sustainability. It follows that policy makers should tailor policies aimed at enhancing renewable energy investment in the long-run as well as complementing renewable energy investment with green finance in the long-run in order to ensure environmental sustainability by means of reducing CO2 emissions. Policymakers in BRICS nations are urged to strengthen governance structures, promote renewable energy investments, leverage green finance, foster public-private partnerships, adopt a holistic approach, and address non-linear effects to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Assessing the determinants of corporate environmental investment: a machine learning approach

In recent years, experts and academics in the environmental management field have developed an interest in the factors and evaluation techniques that influence corporate environmental investment decisions. However, there are substantial differences between studies employing the most recent evaluation methodologies and those that use indicator systems. To explore the mechanisms that influence corporate environmental investment, this study investigated the determinants of environmental investment through the perspectives of firm, board, chair, and chief executive officer (CEO) characteristics using a machine learning approach. Based on a large-scale data sample from Chinese-listed companies, the results indicated that the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model had an accuracy of up to 97.63%, thus performing the best. Additionally, the model that used SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to interpret XGBoost showed that a company's sales performance was the most important factor that influenced environmental investment, followed by CEO tenure, board independence, board gender diversity, chair academic experience, and the company's level of internationalization. Furthermore, when examining the sample of heavily polluting enterprises, sales, board gender diversity, CEO tenure, chair academic experience, board independence, and chair-CEO duality, all were found to play crucial roles in predicting environmental investment. Overall, this study aids in evaluating the factors that influence corporate environmental investment decisions and provides policymakers and practitioners with a machine learning approach for use when assessing these factors.
