High resolution scanning optical imaging of a frozen planar polymer light-emitting electrochemical cell: an experimental and modelling study

Visualizing electroluminescence process in light-emitting electrochemical cells

Electroluminescence occurs via recombination reactions between electrons and holes, but these processes have not been directly evaluated. Here, we explore the operation dynamics of ionic liquid-based light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) with stable electroluminescence by multi-timescale spectroscopic measurements synchronized with the device operation. Bias-modulation spectroscopy, measuring spectral responses to modulated biases, reveals the bias-dependent behavior of p-doped layers varying from growth to saturation and to recession. The operation dynamics of the LEC is directly visualized by time-resolved bias-modulation spectra, revealing the following findings. Electron injection occurs more slowly than hole injection, causing delay of electroluminescence with respect to the p-doping. N-doping proceeds as the well-grown p-doped layer recedes, which occur while the electroluminescence intensity remains constant. With the growth of n-doped layer, hole injection is reduced due to charge balance, leading to hole-accumulation on the anode, after which LEC operation reaches equilibrium. These spectroscopic techniques are widely applicable to explore the dynamics of electroluminescence-devices.

An insight into optical beam induced current microscopy: Concepts and applications

Laser scanning optical beam induced current (OBIC) microscopy has become a powerful and nondestructive alternative to other complicated methods like electron beam induced current (EBIC) microscopy, for high resolution defect analysis of electronic devices. OBIC is based on the generation of electron-hole pairs in the sample due to the raster scanning of a focused laser beam with energy equal or greater than the band gap energy and synchronized detection of resultant current profile with respect to the beam positions. OBIC is particularly suitable to localize defect sites caused by metal-semiconductor interdiffusion or electrostatic discharge (ESD). OBIC signals, thus, are capable of revealing the parameters/factors directly related to the reliability and efficiency of the electronic device under test (DUT). In this review, the basic principles of OBIC microscopy strategies and their notable applications in semiconductor device characterization are elucidated. An overview on the developments of OBIC microscopy is also presented. Specifically, the recent progresses on the following three OBIC measurement strategies have been reviewed, which include continuous laser based single photon OBIC, pulsed laser based single photon OBIC, and multiphoton OBIC microscopy for three-dimensional mapping of photocurrent response of electronic devices at high spatiotemporal resolution. Challenges and future prospects of OBIC in characterizing complex electronic devices are also discussed.

Revealing the Impact of Heat Generation Using Nanographene-Based Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

Self-heating in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) has been long overlooked, while it has a significant impact on (i) device chromaticity by changing the electroluminescent band shape, (ii) device efficiency because of thermal quenching and exciton dissociation reducing the external quantum efficiency (EQE), and (iii) device stability because of thermal degradation of excitons and eliminate doped species, phase separation, and collapse of the intrinsic emitting zone. Herein, we reveal, for the first time, a direct relationship between self-heating and the early changes in the device chromaticity as well as the magnitude of the error comparing theoretical/experimental EQEs-that is, an overestimation error of ca. 35% at usual pixel working temperatures of around 50 °C. This has been realized in LECs using a benchmark nanographene-that is, a substituted hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene-as an emerging class of emitters with outstanding device performance compared to the prior art of small-molecule LECs-for example, luminances of 345 cd/m² and EQEs of 0.35%. As such, this work is a fundamental contribution highlighting how self-heating is a critical limitation toward the optimization and wide use of LECs.
