On the Necessity of Multidisciplinarity in the Development of at-Home Health Monitoring Platforms for Older Adults: Systematic Review

Background

The growth of aging populations globally has increased the demand for new models of care. At-home, computerized health care monitoring is a growing paradigm, which explores the possibility of reducing workloads, lowering the demand for resource-intensive secondary care, and providing more precise and personalized care. Despite the potential societal benefit of autonomous monitoring systems when implemented properly, uptake in health care institutions is slow, and a great volume of research across disciplines encounters similar common barriers to real-world implementation.

Objective

The goal of this systematic review was to construct an evaluation framework that can assess research in terms of how well it addresses already identified barriers to application and then use that framework to analyze the literature across disciplines and identify trends between multidisciplinarity and the likelihood of research being developed robustly.

Methods

This paper introduces a scoring framework for evaluating how well individual pieces of research address key development considerations using 10 identified common barriers to uptake found during meta-review from different disciplines across the domain of health care monitoring. A scoping review is then conducted using this framework to identify the impact that multidisciplinarity involvement has on the effective development of new monitoring technologies. Specifically, we use this framework to measure the relationship between the use of multidisciplinarity in research and the likelihood that a piece of research will be developed in a way that gives it genuine practical application.

Results

We show that viewpoints of multidisciplinarity; namely across computer science and medicine alongside public and patient involvement (PPI) have a significant positive impact in addressing commonly encountered barriers to application research and development according to the evaluation criteria. Using our evaluation metric, multidisciplinary teams score on average 54.3% compared with 35% for teams made up of medical experts and social scientists, and 2.68 for technical-based teams, encompassing computer science and engineering. Also identified is the significant effect that involving either caregivers or end users in the research in a co-design or PPI-based capacity has on the evaluation score (29.3% without any input and between 48.3% and 36.7% for end user or caregiver input respectively, on average).

Conclusions

This review recommends that, to limit the volume of novel research arbitrarily re-encountering the same issues in the limitations of their work and hence improve the efficiency and effectiveness of research, multidisciplinarity should be promoted as a priority to accelerate the rate of advancement in this field and encourage the development of more technology in this domain that can be of tangible societal benefit.

Hepatitis nursing robot based on RP-lidarA1 sensor

BACKGROUND

To alleviate the workload of medical staff and provide personalized care for hepatitis patients, this study focuses on developing a hepatitis care robot.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to integrate the RP-lidarA1 sensor into a hepatitis care robot to achieve high-precision environmental perception, mapping, and navigation, thereby improving healthcare services.

METHODS

The RP-lidarA1 sensor was utilized for environmental scanning, and the MPU6050 chip was used to collect attitude data. An improved RBPF-SLAM algorithm was employed for high-precision map construction. For positioning and navigation, a combination of the A* algorithm and Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) algorithm was used to optimize path planning and obstacle avoidance.

RESULTS

Simulation experiments demonstrated that the improved algorithm reduced the number of particles to 50 in a 140 m2 area and shortened the map construction time to 1200 s. The A* algorithm effectively planned optimal paths, while the DWA algorithm improved navigation efficiency. Satisfaction surveys indicated that 92.4% of hepatitis patients and 81.8% of nurses were highly satisfied with the robot's performance.

CONCLUSIONS

The hepatitis care robot integrating the RP-lidarA1 sensor showed excellent performance in autonomous navigation, map construction, and obstacle avoidance, significantly enhancing the quality and efficiency of medical services.

Advancing healthcare through mobile collaboration: a survey of intelligent nursing robots research

Mobile collaborative intelligent nursing robots have gained significant attention in the healthcare sector as an innovative solution to address the challenges posed by the increasing aging population and limited medical resources. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the research advancements in this field, covering hospital care, home older adults care, and rehabilitation assistance. In hospital settings, these robots assist healthcare professionals in tasks such as patient monitoring, medication management, and bedside care. For home older adults care, they enhance the older adults sense of security and quality of life by offering daily life support and monitoring. In rehabilitation, these robots provide services such as physical rehabilitation training and social interaction to facilitate patient recovery. However, the development of intelligent nursing robots faces challenges in technology, ethics, law, and user acceptance. Future efforts should focus on improving robots' perceptual and cognitive abilities, enhancing human-robot interaction, and conducting extensive clinical experiments for broader applications.

Implementing Autonomous Control in the Digital-Twins-Based Internet of Robotic Things for Remote Patient Monitoring

Conventional patient monitoring methods require skin-to-skin contact, continuous observation, and long working shifts, causing physical and mental stress for medical professionals. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) assists healthcare workers in monitoring patients distantly using various wearable sensors, reducing stress and infection risk. RPM can be enabled by using the Digital Twins (DTs)-based Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) that merges robotics with the Internet of Things (IoT) and creates a virtual twin (VT) that acquires sensor data from the physical twin (PT) during operation to reflect its behavior. However, manual navigation of PT causes cognitive fatigue for the operator, affecting trust dynamics, satisfaction, and task performance. Also, operating manual systems requires proper training and long-term experience. This research implements autonomous control in the DTs-based IoRT to remotely monitor patients with chronic or contagious diseases. This work extends our previous paper that required the user to manually operate the PT using its VT to collect patient data for medical inspection. The proposed decision-making algorithm enables the PT to autonomously navigate towards the patient's room, collect and transmit health data, and return to the base station while avoiding various obstacles. Rather than manually navigating, the medical personnel direct the PT to a specific target position using the Menu buttons. The medical staff can monitor the PT and the received sensor information in the pre-built virtual environment (VE). Based on the operator's preference, manual control of the PT is also achievable. The experimental outcomes and comparative analysis verify the efficiency of the proposed system.

Early prediction of sudden cardiac death risk with Nested LSTM based on electrocardiogram sequential features

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals are very important for heart disease diagnosis. In this paper, a novel early prediction method based on Nested Long Short-Term Memory (Nested LSTM) is developed for sudden cardiac death risk detection. First, wavelet denoising and normalization techniques are utilized for reliable reconstruction of ECG signals from extreme noise conditions. Then, a nested LSTM structure is adopted, which can guide the memory forgetting and memory selection of ECG signals, so as to improve the data processing ability and prediction accuracy of ECG signals. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, four different models with different signal prediction techniques are used for comparison. The extensive experimental results show that this method can realize an accurate prediction of the cardiac beat's starting point and track the trend of ECG signals effectively. This study holds significant value for timely intervention for patients at risk of sudden cardiac death.

Biosignal-integrated robotic systems with emerging trends in visual interfaces: A systematic review

Human-machine interfaces (HMI) are currently a trendy and rapidly expanding area of research. Interestingly, the human user does not readily observe the interface between humans and machines. Instead, interactions between the machine and electrical signals from the user's body are obscured by complex control algorithms. The result is effectively a one-way street, wherein data is only transmitted from human to machine. Thus, a gap remains in the literature: how can information be effectively conveyed to the user to enable mutual understanding between humans and machines? Here, this paper reviews recent advancements in biosignal-integrated wearable robotics, with a particular emphasis on "visualization"-the presentation of relevant data, statistics, and visual feedback to the user. This review article covers various signals of interest, such as electroencephalograms and electromyograms, and explores novel sensor architectures and key materials. Recent developments in wearable robotics are examined from control and mechanical design perspectives. Additionally, we discuss current visualization methods and outline the field's future direction. While much of the HMI field focuses on biomedical and healthcare applications, such as rehabilitation of spinal cord injury and stroke patients, this paper also covers less common applications in manufacturing, defense, and other domains.
