Segmentation of retinal vessels in fundus images based on U-Net with self-calibrated convolutions and spatial attention modules

Automated AI-based grading of neuroendocrine tumors using Ki-67 proliferation index: comparative evaluation and performance analysis

Early detection is critical for successfully diagnosing cancer, and timely analysis of diagnostic tests is increasingly important. In the context of neuroendocrine tumors, the Ki-67 proliferation index serves as a fundamental biomarker, aiding pathologists in grading and diagnosing these tumors based on histopathological images. The appropriate treatment plan for the patient is determined based on the tumor grade. An artificial intelligence-based method is proposed to aid pathologists in the automated calculation and grading of the Ki-67 proliferation index. The proposed system first performs preprocessing to enhance image quality. Then, segmentation process is performed using the U-Net architecture, which is a deep learning algorithm, to separate the nuclei from the background. The identified nuclei are then evaluated as Ki-67 positive or negative based on basic color space information and other features. The Ki-67 proliferation index is then calculated, and the neuroendocrine tumor is graded accordingly. The proposed system's performance was evaluated on a dataset obtained from the Department of Pathology at Meram Faculty of Medicine Hospital, Necmettin Erbakan University. The results of the pathologist and the proposed system were compared, and the proposed system was found to have an accuracy of 95% in tumor grading when compared to the pathologist's report.

Explainable artificial intelligence for the automated assessment of the retinal vascular tortuosity

Retinal vascular tortuosity is an excessive bending and twisting of the blood vessels in the retina that is associated with numerous health conditions. We propose a novel methodology for the automated assessment of the retinal vascular tortuosity from color fundus images. Our methodology takes into consideration several anatomical factors to weigh the importance of each individual blood vessel. First, we use deep neural networks to produce a robust extraction of the different anatomical structures. Then, the weighting coefficients that are required for the integration of the different anatomical factors are adjusted using evolutionary computation. Finally, the proposed methodology also provides visual representations that explain the contribution of each individual blood vessel to the predicted tortuosity, hence allowing us to understand the decisions of the model. We validate our proposal in a dataset of color fundus images providing a consensus ground truth as well as the annotations of five clinical experts. Our proposal outperforms previous automated methods and offers a performance that is comparable to that of the clinical experts. Therefore, our methodology demonstrates to be a viable alternative for the assessment of the retinal vascular tortuosity. This could facilitate the use of this biomarker in clinical practice and medical research.

Evolutionary Architecture Optimization for Retinal Vessel Segmentation

Retinal vessel segmentation (RVS) is crucial in medical image analysis as it helps identify and monitor retinal diseases. Deep learning approaches have shown promising results for RVS, but designing optimal neural network architecture is challenging and time-consuming. Neural architecture search (NAS) is a recent technique that automates the design of neural network architectures within a predefined search space. This study proposes a new NAS method for U-shaped networks, MedUNAS, that discovers deep neural networks with high segmentation performance and lower inference time for RVS problem. We perform opposition-based differential evolution (ODE) and genetic algorithm (GA) to search for the best network structure and compare discrete and continuous encoding strategies on the proposed search space. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first NAS study that performs ODE for RVS problems. The results show that the MedUNAS ODE and GA yield the best and second-best results regarding segmentation performance with less than 50% of the parameters of U-shaped state-of-the-art methods on most of the compared datasets. In addition, the proposed methods outperform the baseline U-Net on four datasets with networks with up to 15 times fewer parameters. Furthermore, ablation studies are performed to evaluate the generalizability of the generated networks to medical image segmentation problems that differ from the trained domain, revealing that such networks can be effectively adapted to new tasks with fine-tuning. The MedUNAS can be a valuable tool for automated and efficient RVS in clinical practice.
