Abstract
BACKGROUND The world's population is rapidly aging, and attention to and research on the increase in life expectancy and age-related diseases are needed. This study aimed to review the in vivo studies on the anti-aging effects of herbal medicines. METHODS In vivo studies of single or complex herbal medicines for anti-aging that were published in the last five years were included in this review. The following databases were used: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science and EMBASE. RESULTS A total of 41 studies were considered eligible for the review. The articles were classified into body organs and functions, experimental country, herbal medicine, extraction method, administration route, dosage, duration, animal model, aging-induced method, sex, number of animals per group, and outcomes and mechanisms A single herbal extract was used in a total of 21 studies including Alpinia oxyphylla Miq., Acanthopanax senticosus and Lyceum barbarum, and a multi-compound herbal prescription was used in a total of 20 studies, including Modified Qiongyu paste, Wuzi Yanzong recipe, etc. Each herbal medicine had anti-aging effects on learning and memory, cognition, emotion, internal organs, gastrointestinal tracts, sexual functions, musculoskeletal function and so on. The common mechanisms of action were antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and various effects and mechanisms for each organ and function were identified. CONCLUSIONS Herbal medicine exhibited beneficial effects on anti-aging in various parts of the body and its function. Further investigation of the appropriate herbal medicine prescriptions and their components is recommended.

Identification of Bioactive Compounds and Potential Mechanisms of Kuntai Capsule in the Treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome by Integrating Network Pharmacology and Bioinformatics. Abstract
Objective This study elucidates the potential therapeutic targets and molecular mechanisms of KTC in the treatment of PCOS. Materials and Methods Using the Traditional Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP), the active ingredients and potential targets of KTC were obtained. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to find differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to PCOS. Search the CTD, DisGeNet, genecards, NCBI, OMIM, and PharmGKB databases for therapeutic targets related to PCOS. The intersection of potential targets, DEGs, and therapeutic targets was submitted to perform bioinformatics analysis by R language. Finally, the analyses' core targets and their corresponding active ingredients were molecularly docked. Results 88 potential therapeutic targets of KTC for PCOS were discovered by intersecting the potential targets, DEGs, and therapeutic targets. According to bioinformatics analysis, the mechanisms of KTC treatment for PCOS could be linked to IL-17 signaling route, p53 signaling pathway, HIF-1 signaling pathway, etc. The minimal binding energies of the 5 core targets and their corresponding ingredients were all less than -6.5. Further research found that quercetin may replace KTC in the treatment of PCOS. Discussion and Conclusions. We explored the active ingredients and molecular mechanisms of KTC in the treatment of PCOS and found that quercetin may be the core ingredient of KTC in the treatment of PCOS.

Abstract
Background The mammalian follicle is the basic functional unit of the ovary, and its normal development is required to obtaining oocytes capable of fertilization. As women get older or decline in ovarian function due to certain pathological factors, the growth and development of follicles becomes abnormal, which ultimately leads to infertility and other related female diseases. Kuntai capsules are currently used in clinical practice to improve ovarian function, and they contain the natural compound Baicalin, which is a natural compound with important biological activities. At present, the role and mechanism of Baicalin in the development of ovarian follicles is unclear. Methods Human primary granulosa cells collected from follicular fluid, and then cultured and treated with Baicalin or its normal control, assessed for viability, subjected to RT-PCR, western blotting, flow cytometry, and hormone analyses. The estrus cycle and oocytes of CD-1 mice were studied after Baicalin administration and compared with controls. Ovaries were collected from the mice and subjected to hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemistry analysis. Results We showed that Baicalin had a dose-dependent effect on granulosa cells cultured in vitro. A low concentration of Baicalin (for example, 10 μM) helped to maintain the viability of granulosa cells; however, at a concentration exceeding 50 μM, it exerted a toxic effect. A low concentration significantly improved the viability of granulosa cells and inhibited cell apoptosis, which may be related to the resultant upregulation of Bcl-2 expression and downregulation of Bax and Caspase 3. By constructing a hydrogen peroxide-induced cell oxidative stress damage model, we found that Baicalin reversed the cell damage caused by hydrogen peroxide. In addition, Baicalin increased the secretion of estradiol and progesterone by upregulating P450arom and stAR. The results of the in vivo experiment showed that the intragastric administration of Baicalin to aged mice improved the estrous cycle and oocyte quality. Furthermore, we observed that Baicalin enhanced the viability of granulosa cells through the mTOR pathway, which in turn improve ovarian function. Conclusion These results indicate that Baicalin could improve the viability of ovarian granulosa cells and the secretion of steroid hormones and thus could help to improve degenerating ovarian function and delay ovarian aging. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the treatment efficacy of Kuntai capsule with Climen only in the therapy of premature ovarian failure. METHODS Randomized controlled trials were electronically retrieved from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of science, CBM, CNKI, Wanfang, and Weipu database. In addition, some related papers were manually checked. All papers were assessed according to the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions, and the effective data were analyzed by Revman 5.3 Software. RESULTS 11 randomized control trials involving 1068 patients were included. Results of meta-analysis showed that E2 (estrogen), the total therapeutic effective rate of the group of Kuntai capsule, and hormone were higher than hormone only. The LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), and Kupperman score of the group of Kuntai capsule and Climen were lower than Climen only. CONCLUSION Available evidence shows that Kuntai capsule with Climen is more effective than Climen in the therapy of premature ovarian failure. Nowadays, the quality of the research studies is low. More large-scaled randomized trials will need to be carried out.
