Composite Track-Etched Membranes: Synthesis and Multifaced Applications

Composite track-etched membranes (CTeMs) emerged as a versatile and high-performance class of materials, combining the precise pore structures of traditional track-etched membranes (TeMs) with the enhanced functionalities of integrated nanomaterials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the synthesis, functionalization, and applications of CTeMs. By incorporating functional phases such as metal nanoparticles and conductive nanostructures, CTeMs exhibit improved performance in various domains. In environmental remediation, CTeMs effectively capture and decompose pollutants, offering both separation and detoxification. In sensor technology, they have the potential to provide high sensitivity and selectivity, essential for accurate detection in medical and environmental applications. For energy storage, CTeMs may be promising in enhancing ion transport, flexibility, and mechanical stability, addressing key issues in battery and supercapacitor performance. Biomedical applications may benefit from the versality of CTeMs, potentially supporting advanced drug delivery systems and tissue engineering scaffolds. Despite their numerous advantages, challenges remain in the fabrication and scalability of CTeMs, requiring sophisticated techniques and meticulous optimization. Future research directions include the development of cost-effective production methods and the exploration of new materials to further enhance the capabilities of CTeMs. This review underscores the transformative potential of CTeMs across various applications and highlights the need for continued innovation to fully realize their benefits.

Effect of copper doping on the photocatalytic performance of Ni2O3@PC membrane composites in norfloxacin degradation

In this study, copper (Cu) and nickel oxide (Ni2O3) microtubes (MTs) were synthesized using an electroless template deposition technique within porous polycarbonate (PC) track-etched membranes (TeMs) to obtain Cu@PC and Ni2O3@PC composite membranes, respectively. The pristine PC TeMs featured nanochannels with a pore density of 4 × 107 pores per cm2 and an average pore diameter of 400 ± 13 nm. The synthesis of a mixed composite, combining Cu and Ni2O3 within the PC matrix, was achieved through a two-step deposition process using a Ni2O3@PC template. An analysis of the resultant composite structure (Cu/Ni2O3@PC) confirmed the existence of CuNi (97.3%) and CuO (2.7%) crystalline phases. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In photodegradation assessments, the Cu/Ni2O3@PC mixed composite demonstrated higher photocatalytic activity, achieving a substantial 59% degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) under UV light irradiation. This performance surpassed that of both Ni2O3@PC and Cu@PC composites. The optimal pH for maximum NOR removal from the aqueous solution was determined to be pH 5, with a reaction time of 180 min. The degradation of NOR in the presence of these composites adhered to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism and a pseudo-first order kinetic model. The reusability of the catalysts was also investigated for 10 consecutive runs, without any activation or regeneration treatments. The Cu@PC membrane catalyst demonstrated a marked decline in degradation efficiency after the 2nd test cycle, ultimately catalyzing only 10% of NOR after the 10th cycle. In contrast, the Ni2O3@PC based catalyst demonstrated a more stable NOR degradation efficiency throughout all 10 runs, with 27% NOR removal observed during the final test. Remarkably, the catalytic performance of the Cu/Ni2O3@PC mixed composite remained highly active even after being recycled 4 times. The degradation efficiency exhibited a gradual reduction, with a 17% decrease after the 6th run and a cumulative 35% removal of NOR achieved by the 10th cycle. Overall, the findings indicate that Cu/Ni2O3@PC mixed composite membranes may represent an advancement in the quest to mitigate the adverse effects of antibiotic pollution in aquatic environments and hold significant promise for sustainable water treatment practices.

Synthesis and Characterization of Gold-Shell Magnetic Nanowires for Theranostic Applications

Increasing interest has been given in recent years to alternative physical therapies for cancer, with a special focus on magneto-mechanical actuation of magnetic nanoparticles. The reported findings underline the need for highly biocompatible nanostructures, along with suitable mechanical and magnetic properties for different configurations of alternating magnetic fields. Here, we show how the biocompatibility of magnetic nanowires (MNWs), especially CoFe, can be increased by gold coating, which can be used both in cancer therapy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study provides a new approach in the field of theranostic applications, demonstrating the capabilities of core–shell nanowires to be used both to increase the cancer detection limit (as T2 contrast agents) and for its treatment (through magneto-mechanical actuation). The MNWs were electrodeposited in alumina templates, whereas the gold layer was electroless-plated by galvanic replacement. The gold-coated CoFe nanowires were biocompatible until they induced high cellular death to human osteosarcoma cells via magneto-mechanical actuation. These same MNWs displayed increased relaxivities (r1, r2). Our results show that the gold-coated CoFe nanowires turned out to be highly efficient in tumor cell destruction, and, at the same time, suitable for MRI applications.

Catalytic Activity of Ni Nanotubes Covered with Nanostructured Gold

Ni nanotubes (NTs) were produced by the template method in the pores of ion-track membranes and then were successfully functionalized with gold nanoparticles (Ni@Au NTs) using electroless wet-chemical deposition with the aim to demonstrate their high catalytic activity. The fabricated NTs were characterized using a variety of techniques in order to determine their morphology and dimensions, crystalline structure, and magnetic properties. The morphology of Au coating depended on the concentration of gold chloride aqueous solution used for Au deposition. The catalytic activity was evaluated by a model reaction of the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by borohydride ions in the presence of Ni and Ni@Au NTs. The reaction was monitored spectrophotometrically in real time by detecting the decrease in the absorption peaks. It was found that gold coating with needle-like structure formed at a higher Au-ions concentration had the strongest catalytic effect, while bare Ni NTs had little effect. The presence of a magnetic core allowed the extraction of the catalyst with the help of a magnetic field for reusable applications.
