Assessment of indoor air quality and their inter-association in hospitals of northern India-a cross-sectional study

Temporal trends in indoor bioaerosols: implications for dental healthcare environments

Antibiotic resistance, a significant public health hazard, is predicted to cause 10 million deaths worldwide by 2050. The study aimed to identify culturable bioaerosols in the indoor air of dental units in Lahore and assess their antibiotic resistance. Air samples were collected from 10 dental unit locations at different distances, with average concentrations of fungi and bacteria falling within intermediate ranges, per the Global Index of Microbial Contamination (GIMC/m3) index. The study found higher antibiotic-resistant strains in hospital dental units, particularly during winter. The most vigorous strain, S.aureus-NAJIH18, exhibited 70% resistance to ceftazidime. The research highlights the importance of quantifying microbial pollutants for evaluating their source and complexity. It suggests proactive mitigation techniques, such as focused cleaning and air filtration, to improve indoor air quality can mitigate the spread of antibiotic-resistant strains. These insights offer hope in combating the growing public health threat of antibiotic resistance.

Indoor Air Quality in an Orthopedic Hospital from Romania

Inside hospitals, there is a trend of increasing levels of air pollutants. However, only the indoor air quality in operating theaters is carefully monitored. Therefore, we set the goal of this study to evaluate the indoor air quality in areas of an orthopedics department and to compare the indoor air quality indices that characterize these areas. We used a monitoring system based on the Internet of Things with uRADMonitor model A3 sensors, with which we prospectively measured indoor air quality in the facilities of the orthopedic emergency hospital of Targu Mures in Romania, between 1 February 2023, and 31 January 2024. The primary target pollutants investigated in the emergency room, outpatient room and ward were carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particles with a diameter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5). We compared the effectiveness of the intervention for emergency rooms where air purifiers were working or not. The concentrations of CO2, VOCs and PM2.5 were significantly higher in the emergency room than in the outpatient room or ward. The indoor air quality was worst in winter, when the CO2, NO2 and VOC concentrations were at their highest. Air purifiers can help reduce the concentration of PM2.5 in emergency rooms. Medical staff and patients in orthopedic hospitals, especially in emergency rooms, are frequently exposed to polluted ambient air, which can affect their health. Orthopedic medical practice guidelines should address issues relating to the protection of personnel through the application of measures to improve indoor air quality.

Hospital-borne hazardous air pollutants and air cleaning strategies amid the surge of SARS-CoV-2 new variants

Indoor air pollutants and airborne contamination removal have been challenging in healthcare facilities. The airborne transmission control and HVAC system may collapse in hospitals due to the highly infectious respiratory disease-associated patient surge, like COVID-19. Common air filtration systems and HVAC systems enhance the patients' comfort and support indoor hygiene, hitherto insufficient to control highly infectious airborne pathogens and hospital-borne pollutants such as radon, PM2.5, patient droplets, VOC, high CO2, and anesthetic gases. This review summarized important air cleaning interventions to enhance HVAC efficiency and indoor safety. We discussed efficient air cleaning and ventilation strategies including air filtration, air ionization, passive removal materials (PRM), and UVGI to minimize cross-contamination in hospital wards.

Respiratory infection transmission risk and indoor air quality at outpatient departments and emergency treatment units of Sri Lankan teaching hospitals

Indoor carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has been used as a proxy of the degree of ventilation and, by extension, as an indicator of the risk of contracting respiratory infections. No publications exist regarding indoor air quality (IAQ) parameters of Sri Lankan hospitals.We measured the levels of CO2 and seven other IAQ parameters during morning rush hours for three days, in outpatient departments (OPDs) and emergency treatment units (ETUs) of all 21 teaching hospitals of Sri Lanka. We measured the same parameters of outdoor air also. We calculated the mean values of those parameters. We looked for correlations between outdoors and OPD and ETU levels of selected air quality parameters.The average CO2 levels of outdoors, OPDs and ETUs respectively were 514ppm (ppm = parts per million), 749ppm and 795ppm. The average levels of PM2.5 (particulate matter with diameters <2.5μm) outdoors, OPDs and ETUs respectively, were 28.7μg/m3,32μg/m3 and 25.6 μg/m3. The average levels of PM10 (particulate matter with diameters <10μm) outdoors, OPDs and ETUs respectively, were 49.4μg/m3, 55.5μg/m3 and 47.9 μg/m3. The median levels of formaldehyde outdoors, OPDs and ETUs respectively, were 0.03mg/m3, 0.04mg/m3 and 0.08mg/m3. The median levels of total volatile organic compounds (VOC) outdoors, OPDs and ETUs respectively were 0.12mg/m3, 0.19mg/m3 and 0.38mg/m3.CO2 levels of air in OPDs and ETUs generally were below the national ceilings but above the ceilings used by some developed countries. Outdoors, OPDs and ETUs air contain PM10, PM2.5 levels higher than WHO ceilings, although below the national ceilings. VOC and formaldehyde levels are generally below the national ceilings. Air in OPDs and ETUs is hotter and humid than national ceilings. Outdoor PM10, PM2.5 levels influence OPDs and ETUs levels. We propose methods to reduce the risk of nosocomial respiratory infections and to improve IAQ of Sri Lankan OPDs and ETUs.
