Study on Mass Transfer of Isopropylbenzene and Oxygen in a Two-Phase Partitioning Bioreactor in the Presence of Silicone Oil

Two-liquid-phase system: A promising technique for predicting bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in long-term contaminated soils

A two-liquid-phase system (TLPS), which consisted of soil slurry and silicone oil, was employed to extract polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in four long-term contaminated soils in order to assess the bioavailability of PAHs. Extraction kinetics of six PAHs viz. phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, dibenzo(a,h)anthrancene were selected to investigate as they covered the susceptible and recalcitrant PAHs in soil. A parallel experiments were also carried out on the microbial degradation of these PAHs in soil with and without biostimulation (by adding (NH₄)₂HPO₄). The rapidly desorbed fraction of fluoranthene, as indicated by the two-fraction model, was found the highest, ranging from 21.4% to 37.4%, whereas dibenzo(a,h)anthrancene was the lowest, ranging from 8.9% to 20.5%. The rapid desorption of selected PAHs was found to be finished within 24 h. The rapidly desorbed fraction of PAHs investigated using TLPS, was significantly correlated (R² = 0.95) with that degraded by microorganisms in biostimulation treatment. This suggested that the TLPS-assisted extraction could be a promising technique in determining the bioavailability of aged PAHs in contaminated soils. It also suggested that applying sufficient nutrients in bioremediation of field contaminated soils is crucial. Further work is required to test its application to more hydrophobic organic pollutants in long-term contaminated soils.

Development of a biphasic electroreactor with a wet scrubbing system for the removal of gaseous benzene

An efficient, continuous flow electroreactor system comprising a scrubbing column (for absorption) and a biphasic electroreactor (for degradation) was developed to treat gas streams containing benzene. Initial benzene absorption studies using a continuous flow bubble column containing absorbents like 40% sulfuric acid, 10% silicone oil (3, 5, 10 cSt), or 100% silicone oil showed that 100% silicone oil is the most suitable. A biphasic batch electroreactor based on 50 mL of silicone oil and 100 mL of activated Co(III) (activated electrochemically) in 40% sulfuric acid demonstrated that indirect oxidation of benzene is possible by Co(III). Combined experiments on the wet scrubbing column and biphasic electroreactor (BP-ER) were performed to determine the feasibility of benzene removal, which is reside in the silicone oil medium. In semidynamic scrubbing with BP-ER experiments using an aqueous electroreactor volume of 2 L, and an inlet gas flow and a gaseous benzene concentration were 10 Lmin(-1) and 100 ppm, respectively, benzene removal efficiency is 75% in sustainable way. The trend of CO2 evolution is well correlated with benzene recovery in the BP-ER. The addition of sodiumdodecyl sulfate (SDS) enhanced the recovery of silicone oil without affecting benzene removal. This process is promising for the treatment of high concentrations of gaseous benzene.

Substrate mass transport in two-phase partitioning bioreactors employing liquid and solid non-aqueous phases

The mass transfer of phenol and butyl acetate to/from water was studied in two-phase partitioning bioreactors using immiscible organic solvents and solid polymer beads as the partitioning phases in a 5-L stirred tank bioreactor. Virtually instantaneous mass transfer was observed with phenol in water/2-undecanone, and with butyl acetate in water/silicone oil systems. The mass transfer of butyl acetate to silicone oil was rapid irrespective of the viscosity of the partitioning phase. When Hytrel® polymer beads were employed as the partitioning phase, substrate transport to the polymer was found not to be externally mass transfer limited, but rather internally by substrate diffusion into the polymer. In contrast to gaseous, poorly soluble substrates studied in other works, mass transfer of soluble substrates such as phenol and butyl acetate to the polymer was unaffected by impeller speed but rather by polymer mass fraction.

Ionic liquids: applications and future trends in bioreactor technology

Ionic liquids (ILs) constitute a new generation of solvents entirely composed of ions. ILs are usually considered as green solvents due to their negligible vapor pressure and other properties, such as non-flammability and high thermostability. Biotechnological applications involving the use of ILs are currently emerging. Reports on enzymatic and whole-cell catalysis in the presence of ILs increased from the past decade. Nonetheless, IL decomposition at relatively low temperatures as well as IL toxicity towards microbial cells and superior organisms recently challenge the "green label" commonly attached to ILs. On the other hand, the possibility to fine-tune practically all the IL physicochemical properties by modifying its chemical structure makes IL truly designer solvents. Thus, IL tuning can be applied to overcome toxicity drawbacks and to broaden their application spectrum. This work reviews the use of ILs in biotechnological applications. Finally, critical niches for future research are identified and discussed.
