Effects of wastewater irrigation on chemical and physical properties of Petroselinum crispum

Evaluación inicial de parámetros de campo en un biodigestor anaeróbico para el tratamiento de aguas residuales

<p>El biodigestor anaerobio utilizado en este estudio, se diseñó para tratar agua residual doméstica en un sanitario de prueba, que se caracteriza por ser de: flujo continuo, baja carga orgánica y tener cuatro etapas de proceso. La importancia del prototipo estudiado radicó en las condiciones reales en que se probó. La primera etapa consistió en la selección del sitio, construcción del prototipo en ferrocemento con capacidad de 1m, impermeabilización y carga. En esta etapa se inoculó el reactor con materia orgánica procedente de las descargas del sanitario, durante el periodo de agosto a diciembre de 2011. La evaluación de este periodo consistió en la medición de parámetros de campo: pH, conductividad eléctrica, sólidos sedimentables, temperatura del influente y efluente del sistema que permitieron verificar el comportamiento del proceso del digestor durante la fase de arranque. Los resultados obtenidos para estas determinaciones a la entrada y salida del biodigestor respectivamente son los siguientes: pH (8.03; 8.43), conductividad eléctrica (1510.83 µS/cm; 1207.00 µS/cm), temperatura del proceso (19.2°C; 20.1°C), sólidos sedimentables (144.5mL/L; 0.02mL/L), oxígeno disuelto (4.5992 mg/L; 0.1924 mg/L) estos datos proporcionaron un punto de partida para el tratamiento de aguas residuales de tipo doméstica.</p>

Bioconcentration factors and the risk concentrations of potentially toxic elements in garden soils

Empirical models describe soil-plant transfers to explain the variations in the occurrence of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in soils and to estimate the Bioconcentration Factor (BCF). In this study, results were selected based on data in the literature on soils of humid tropical and temperate regions to evaluate soil-plant transfer models, to calculate the BCF and to derive risk concentrations of Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni and Zn present in the exposure pathway leading to the consumption of contaminated vegetables. The Cetesb (Environmental Agency of the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil) mathematical model was used to derive the risk posed by soil concentrations in urban and rural exposure scenarios. The results of the pseudo total contents of PTE in the soil and the contents absorbed by plants were compared and the BCFs were calculated by the use of geometric means, including a correction factor appropriate to each particular type of soil. Differences were observed between BCFs calculated for each climate region: humid tropical (HTR) and temperate (TE), which the first one presented the highest values to BCF in leaves and the lowest BCF values for root, except Ni, compared to second one. The soil concentrations with the highest risk were found in humid tropical regions as compared with those found in temperate regions, except for Ni. The obtained BCFs may contribute to any future revisions of guideline values as well as help other state environmental agencies to establish their own guideline values.

Assessment of long-term wastewater irrigation impacts on the soil geochemical properties and the bioaccumulation of heavy metals to the agricultural products

An extensive field survey was employed for assessing the impacts of long-term wastewater irrigation of forage crops and orange orchards in three suburban agricultural areas in Cyprus (areas I, II, and III), as compared to rainfed agriculture, on the soil geochemical properties and the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu, Co) to the agricultural products. Both ryegrass fields and orange orchards in areas I and II were continuously wastewater irrigated for 10 years, whereas clover fields in area III for 0.5, 4, and 8 years. The results revealed that wastewater reuse for irrigation caused a slight increase in soil salinity and Cl(-) content in areas I and II, and a remarkable increase, having strong correlation with the period in which wastewater irrigation was practiced, in area III. Soil salinization in area III was due to the high electrical conductivity (EC) of the wastewater applied for irrigation, attributed to the influx of seawater to the sewage collection network in area III. In addition, the wastewater irrigation practice resulted in a slight decrease of the soil pH values in area III, while a subtle impact was identified regarding the CaCO3, Fe, and heavy metal content in the three areas surveyed. The heavy metal content quantified in the forage plants' above-ground parts was below the critical levels of phytotoxicity and the maximum acceptable concentration in dairy feed, whereas heavy metals quantified in orange fruit pulp were below the maximum permissible levels (MPLs). Heavy metal phytoavailability was confined due to soil properties (high pH and clay content), as evidenced by the calculated low transfer factor (TF).

Effects of irrigation with wastewater on the physiological properties and heavy metal content in Lepidium sativum L. and Eruca sativa (Mill.)

The purpose of this study was to determine the physiological properties of and heavy metal content in Lepidium sativum L. and Eruca sativa (Mill.) irrigated with municipal wastewater for 20 days. Wastewater was taken from a section where all wastewater of Adiyaman is collected. We analysed the soil for physicochemical properties, heavy metals and nutrient content and the plants for photosynthetic pigment content, dry weight and length. Irrigation wastewater increased the electrical conductivity and organic matter content in plant soil. In both plant soils, Cd and Ni content significantly increased with respect to control. Dry matter content decreased significantly in the edible parts, and the length of the edible parts increased significantly in E. sativa. Photosynthetic pigment content increased in L. sativum and decreased in E. sativa. Nutrient content changed significantly in both plants. In the edible parts of L. sativum, Cd and Ni content increased significantly compared to Pb and Cr. The edible parts of E. sativa also showed a higher Cd level than the control plant. The enrichment factor of the heavy metals in the edible parts of L. sativum followed this order: Cu > Pb > Cd > Ni > Cr and of E. sativa: Pb > Cd > Cu > Cr > Ni. The edible parts of both plants showed a high transfer factor (TF > 1) for Cd, which points to high mobility of Cd from soil to plant. In conclusion, the use of wastewater for irrigation increased heavy metal content in both plants and affected their physiological and morphological properties.

Biochemical and haematological assessment of toxic effects of the leaf ethanol extract of Petroselinum crispum (Mill) Nyman ex A.W. Hill (Parsley) in rats

Background

Petroselinum crispum, a bright green biennial shrub is widely used traditionally as a food additive and herbal remedies for many ailments. This study therefore aimed to assess the toxic effects of its leaf extract using some biochemical, haematological parameters.

Methods

The toxic effects were assessed by quantifying liver enzymes such as serum aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total serum protein and liver weight. Effects on haematological parameters were assessed by analysis of parked cell volume (PCV), red blood cell count (RBC), white blood cells (WBC) and haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations. Histopathological studies were done on the liver and kidneys.

Results

The extract caused significant increase in serum activity of alanine amino transferase and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels at the dose of 1000 mg/kg. Other biochemical and haematological parameters were not affected at lower doses. Conversely, the liver weight was not affected after eight weeks of treatment at the dose levels studied. The organs obtained for pathological study, were structurally unchanged under histopathological evaluation at lower doses but inflammatory and necrotic features were observed at doses ≥ 1000 mg/kg.

Conclusion

The results indicate that the leaf ethanol extract of Petroselinum crispum was hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic at continued oral doses equal to or more than 1000 mg/kg, but no obvious toxicity when used at lower doses. Therefore, there should be caution in its administration to avoid overdosing and known interaction with some medications. In addition, the plant should be kept away from pets and domestic animals and should not be cultivated on soil irrigated with waste water due to their ability to bio-accumulate toxic metals.
