Abstract
Dyslipidemia is an important public health issue. Copper may influence lipid metabolism, possibly via inflammation, but the mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the association between urinary copper concentrations and blood lipids (total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG)), and the possible mediating role of inflammation, assessed via high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). We conducted a cross-sectional, population-based study using baseline data from Switzerland's CoLaus|PsyCoLaus cohort. Urinary copper was measured from spot urine using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and adjusted for creatinine. Lipid markers and hs-CRP were measured using standardized biochemical assays. Multiple linear regression assessed associations, and mediation effects were evaluated using the SGmediation2 package. A total of 6284 adults (mean age 52.6 years, 53.4% female) were included. Urinary copper was positively associated with TG (beta=0.08, 95%CI 0.04, 0.12) and negatively associated with HDL-C (- 0.04, 95%CI - 0.07, - 0.003). Additionally, urinary copper was positively associated with hs-CRP (0.51, 95%CI 0.42, 0.60), which in turn was positively associated with TG (0.05, 95%CI 0.04, 0.06) and negatively associated with HDL-C (- 0.04, 95%CI - 0.05, - 0.03). Mediation analysis revealed that urinary copper exerts partial indirect effects on TG (mediation effect 31.4%) and HDL-C (56.9%) through hs-CRP. hs-CRP partially mediated the associations between urinary copper and HDL-C and TG, with a robust effect for TG but statistical uncertainty for HDL-C. No mediation was observed for TC or LDL-C. These findings suggest hs-CRP's role in lipid metabolism, especially in TG regulation.

Abstract
A limited number of cohort studies have explored the impact of serum essential metal elements on blood pressure (BP) or glycolipids and their regulatory mechanism in children. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum metal concentrations of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), and magnesium (Mg) and BP in children, and explore the potential mediating effects of glycolipid profiles. This cohort study included 1993 children (3566 BP measurements) aged 6-14 years in Chongqing, China. Serum essential metals, BP, lipid profiles, and glucose and insulin levels were measured. The relationship between serum metal levels and BP was analyzed using generalized linear and regression models, and a mediation analysis was performed to examine the potential mediating role of glycolipids. After adjusting for confounders, positive associations were found between serum Fe and Zn levels and BP parameters (all P < 0.05). A "U" style relationship between Cu and BP was found. Stronger associations were found in children aged ≤ 10 years, with sex-specific differences for Fe, Zn, and Cu. The relationship between elevated BP and serum Mg and Ca was not found. Our study found that triglycerides showed a significant relationship with Fe and Zn levels (P < 0.005). Moreover, triglycerides, partially mediate the effects of Zn on elevated BP. Serum Fe, Zn, and Cu concentrations were associated with BP in children, and age and sex differences were observed. Triglycerides may play a mediating role. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining an optimal serum essential metal status for cardiovascular health in children and suggest potential early prevention strategies.

Abstract
It is unclear whether blood concentrations of copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) influence skeletal muscle mass and strength in children. We aimed to explore the associations between plasma Cu, Mg, and Ca and skeletal muscle indicators in Chinese children. A total of 452 children aged 6 to 9 years old were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Whole body lean soft tissue mass (WLSTM), trunk lean soft tissue mass (TLSTM), and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Parameters of these indicators divided by Height2 (Ht2) and Weight (Wt) at the corresponding sites were calculated. Handgrip strength was also measured. Parameters of skeletal muscle indicators and handgrip strength that were below the sex-specific 20th percentile were considered low levels. Plasma concentrations of Cu, Mg, and Ca were measured using ICP-MS. After adjusting for several potential covariates, among the total subjects, for every one standard deviation increase in Cu concentrations, there was a 0.939% decrease in WLSTM/Wt, a 0.415% decrease in TLSTM/Wt, and a 0.47% decrease in ASMM/Wt. For every one standard deviation increase in Cu concentrations, there was a higher odd (OR: 1.36, 95%CI 1.06, 1.75) of low WLSTM/Wt, TLSTM/Wt (OR: 1.33, 95%CI 1.03, 1.71), ASMM/Ht2 (OR: 1.32, 95%CI 1.02, 1.69), as well as ASMM/Wt (OR: 1.56, 95%CI 1.23, 1.99). No significant associations were found between Mg, Ca, and most skeletal muscle indicators. Higher plasma Cu concentrations were adversely associated with skeletal muscle indicators at multiple sites in Chinese children.

Abstract
Exposure to environmental elements can alter gut microbiota, further affecting host health. Exploring the interrelationships among element exposure, gut microbiota and blood pressure (BP) during pregnancy, as well as the mediating roles of gut microbiota, is warranted, which holds implications for maternal and offspring health. In a prospective cohort study between 2017-2018, 733 pregnant women were included. The serum elements and gut microbiota during the second trimester were assessed, and BP was collected during the second and third trimester and before delivery. Fourteen associations were identified between serum elements and BP, including positive associations of zinc (Zn) and thallium (Tl) with systolic BP during the second trimester. Rubidium (Rb) showed a positive association with Pielou's evenness. Serum elements, such as Tl and Rb, were significantly associated with the relative abundance of bacteria and co-abundance groups (CAGs). Alpha diversity was negatively associated with BP levels and trajectories. Moreover, 15 associations between gut microbiota and BP were shown. Finally, mediation analysis confirmed that CAG2 and Pielou's evenness mediated the associations of Tl and Rb with BP, respectively. We concluded that serum elements can contribute to BP changes during pregnancy through gut microbiota, suggesting gut microbiota-targeted approach as a potential intervention.

Abstract
(1) Background: Epidemiological studies on the relationship between serum copper and hypertension are contradictory. We assessed the relationship between serum copper and blood pressure among adults in the United States. (2) Methods: We divided hypertension into two categories: treated hypertension and untreated hypertension. Linear or logistic regression analysis was applied to investigate the association between serum copper concentrations and blood pressure levels. (3) Results: As compared to quartile 1, the odds ratios (ORs) for untreated hypertension in quartiles 2, 3, and 4 were 1.02 (0.74-1.42), 1.23 (0.88-1.72), and 1.08 (0.74-1.58), respectively, in multivariable analysis (all p > 0.05). In non-hypertension, as compared with quartile 1, the β (95% CI) of systolic blood pressure for quartiles 2, 3, and 4 was -0.92 (-2.07-0.23), -0.05 (-1.30-1.20), and -0.48 (-1.83-0.88), respectively, in multivariable analysis (all p > 0.05). As compared to quartile 1, the ORs for treated hypertension in quartiles 2, 3, and 4 were 1.36 (0.88-2.10), 1.35 (0.87-2.09), and 1.56 (0.98-2.47), respectively, upon multivariable analysis including antihypertensive medication use as a covariate (all p > 0.05). Furthermore, 1SD increase in serum copper was non-significantly associated with 1.16 (0.97-1.37)-fold increased risk of hypertension in multivariable analysis (p = 0.096). (4) Conclusion: In the present study, we discovered that the serum copper concentration was not related with hypertension or blood pressure levels. Antihypertensive drug use may distort the correlation between copper and blood pressure levels. Information on antihypertensive drug use may be taken into account when identifying new risk factors for hypertension.

Abstract
Macrominerals play vital roles in a multitude of physiologic systems. A myriad of biochemical reactions are dependent on or affected by these electrolytes. The current review attempts to identify the role of macrominerals as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium and sulfur in human health, in addition to their absorption and homeostasis inside the body. We also focused on their amount in major food sources and the recommended daily intake of each macromineral. In addition, a deep insight into the orchestration of the 6 different macrominerals' requirements is presented across the human life cycle, beginning from fertility and pregnancy, and reaching adulthood and senility, with insight on interactions among them and underlying action mechanisms. The effect of sex is also presented for each mineral at each life stage to highlight the different daily requirements and/ or effects. The current review identified the role of macrominerals in human health, in addition to their absorption and homeostasis in the body. Based on the in-depth understanding of the factors influencing the metabolism of macrominerals, we could better explore their safety and possible therapeutic potential in specific disorders. There is still a need to precisely demonstrate the bioavailability of macrominerals from various types of functional food.

Abstract
AimHypertension is among the most prevalent chronic diseases with diverse etiology, affecting over 1 billion people globally. In numerous studies, vitamin C inversely correlated with blood pressure and was suspected to have antihypertensive properties. Currently, there is conflicting evidence regarding the relationship between vitamin C and blood pressure, with most studies being conducted on hypertensive subjects. The principal objective of this project was to investigate the relationship between vitamin C and blood pressure in normotensive adult subjects.MethodsA total of 2,533 individuals aged 20 years and above were enrolled in the present study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018. Outcome variables were systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Serum vitamin C was regarded as an independent variable. EmpowerStats software and R (version 3.4.3) were used to examine the association between vitamin C and SBP or DBP.ResultsVitamin C was reversely correlated with both SBP (β = −0.02, 95% CI: −0.03 to −0.00, p = 0.0306) and DBP (β = −0.02, 95% CI: −0.04 to −0.01, p = <0.0011) after adjusting all covariates. This reverse relationship may be affected by a number of factors, including a person’s gender, age, race, and ethnicity. A U-shaped association between vitamin C and SBP in females and an inverted one between vitamin C and DBP in males were detected, respectively. We further calculated the inflection points at 90.3 μmol/L for females and 40 μmol/L for males. It is somewhat surprising that a reverse U-shaped distribution between vitamin C and SBP and DBP in people over 50 was detected, and the point of inflection of vitamin C were all located at 40 μmol/L.ConclusionVitamin C was negatively correlated with both SBP and DBP in this cross-sectional analysis. However, a U-shaped relationship and an inverted one were also observed in certain people, which implied that, though vitamin C is considered a vital antioxidant, maintaining vitamin C at appropriate levels may be beneficial according to different populations.
