Abstract
Objective The results of epidemiological studies on the association between nickel exposure and diabetes remain controversial. Therefore, an update meta-analysis was conducted to examine the association between urinary nickel levels and diabetes risk, and to focus on whether there is an association between blood nickel levels and diabetes risk. Methods Relevant studies were comprehensively searched from PubMed, Web of Science, and Wanfang databases from their inception to July 2024. The random-effects model was utilized to determine pooled Standard Mean Difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), with stratified and sensitivity analyses also performed. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using I 2 statistic, while publication bias was evaluated using Egger's and Begg's tests. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Results A total of 19 studies involving 46,071 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The random-effects model indicated that the pooled SMD for nickel exposure levels in diabetic patients and non-diabetic controls were 0.16 (95% CI 0.07-0.2) for urine and 0.03 (95% CI -0.20 to 0.27) for blood, respectively. Conclusion It was discovered that diabetes risk was positively correlated with urinary nickel levels, whereas there was no significant correlation with blood nickel levels. Furthermore, it appeared that the association between nickel exposure and diabetes risk differ in individuals with diabetes compared to those with pre-diabetes, and that the direction of the correlation may even be reversed. In conclusion, more high-quality prospective studies are needed in order to validate these findings in future research endeavors. Abstract
BACKGROUND The rising prevalence of diabetes underscores the need for identifying effective prevention strategies. Recent research suggests environmental factors, particularly heavy metals like copper, significantly influence health outcomes, including diabetes, through mechanisms involving inflammation and oxidative stress. This study aims to explore how serum copper levels affect blood glucose, employing NHANES data from 2011 to 2016, to provide insights into environmental health's role in diabetes prevention and management. METHODS The study analyzed data from 2,318 NHANES participants across three cycles (2011-2016), focusing on those with available data on serum copper, inflammatory markers, and blood glucose levels. We utilized principal component analysis for selecting inflammatory markers, mediation analysis to examine direct and indirect effects, multiple linear regression for assessing relationships between markers and glucose levels, and weighted quantile sum regression for evaluating individual and collective marker effects, adjusting for demographic variables and serum copper. RESULTS Participants averaged 42.70 years of age, with a near-even split between genders. Average serum copper was 119.50 μg/dL, white blood cell count 6.82 × 109/L, and fasting blood glucose 107.10 mg/dL. Analyses identified significant mediation by inflammatory markers (especially white blood cells: 39.78%) in the copper-blood glucose relationship. Regression analyses highlighted a positive correlation between white blood cells (estimate: 1.077, 95% CI: 0.432 to 2.490, p = 0.013) and copper levels and a negative correlation for monocyte percentage (estimate: -1.573, 95% CI: 0.520 to -3.025, p = 0.003). Neutrophil percentage was notably influential in glucose levels. Sensitive analyses confirmed the study's findings. CONCLUSION Serum copper levels significantly impact blood glucose through inflammatory marker mediation, highlighting the importance of considering environmental factors in diabetes management and prevention. These findings advocate for public health interventions and policies targeting environmental monitoring and heavy metal exposure reduction, emphasizing the potential of environmental health measures in combating diabetes incidence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Common colds are among the top reasons children miss school and adults miss work. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are millions of cases of the common cold in the United States each year. The essential trace elements zinc and copper have immunomodulatory functions, and zinc has been reported to reduce the general risk of infection, whereas the copper-to-zinc ratio has been associated with an increased risk of incident infections in middle-aged men. Studies involving these two trace elements are generally scarce and were often limited to men. MATERIAL AND METHODS We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) to examine potential associations between head or chest cold events and serum levels of copper and zinc in n = 2795 NHANES participants enrolled between 2011 and 2016. RESULTS Comparing participants with and without an event of head or chest cold in the last 30 days, no significant differences were found in the serum levels of both trace elements. Notably, copper levels tended to be slightly higher in participants with a recent infection (121.56 (2.69) µg/dl) as compared to participants without infection (117.755 (1.04) µg/dl; p = 0.119). In multivariate logistic regression models adjusting for confounders, copper levels were significantly associated with increased odds for a previous head/chest cold (OR: 1.93 (CI: 1.07-3.47), p = 0.028). Notably, no significant associations were found for zinc and the copper-to-zinc ratio. CONCLUSIONS Elevated copper levels were associated with head and chest cold events in the past 30 days. Whether elevated copper levels reflect a pro-inflammatory infection-predisposing status or whether they were elevated subsequent to the infectious event in some individuals in the sense of a reversed causality remains subject to future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nickel is considered an essential nutrient for certain microbial, plant, and animal species, but its role in human health remains controversial. Some studies have reported the relationship between nickel and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but the results are not consistent and the mechanism is not clear, which needs further exploration. AIM To investigate the possible correlation between nickel and T2DM. METHODS We conducted a case-control study of 192 patients with T2DM and 189 healthy controls at a hospital in central China. Plasma concentrations of nickel and six other trace elements were measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline models (RCS), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to evaluate the relationship between plasma nickel and T2DM and its metabolic risk factors, as well as the presence or absence of interactions between nickel and other elements. RESULTS The T2DM group exhibited considerably lower plasma nickel levels than the control group (P < 0.001). Whether using a crude or adjusted model, logistic regression analysis finds a negative correlation between nickel levels and the risk of T2DM (P trend < 0.001). According to the RCS, the risk of T2DM reduces with rising nickel levels when the value is below 6.1 μg/L; nickel has a negative linear correlation with fasting plasma glucose (FPG), an inverse U-shaped connection with superoxide dismutase (SOD), and a positive linear correlation with malondialdehyde (MDA) (all P overall < 0.05). The plasma nickel concentration was positively correlated with zinc, vanadium, and chromium (r = 0.23, 0.11, and 0.19, respectively; all P < 0.05) and negatively correlated with copper (r = - 0.11, P < 0.05). In the BKMR model, interactions of nickel with zinc on T2DM and SOD, nickel with chromium on T2DM and homeostasis model assessment of β cell (HOMA-β), and nickel with copper on FPG, homeostasis model assessment of insulin (HOMA-IR), and MDA were observed. CONCLUSION Nickel may have a dual effect on the risk of T2DM, with a protective range of less than 6.1 μg/L. Potential interactions between nickel, copper, zinc, and chromium existed in their associations with T2DM and its metabolic risk factors.

Abstract
This study aimed to detect the relationship between nickel exposure and body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and incidence of obesity in the general population of the United States. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 database was utilized, and the sample comprised 1702 participants aged 18 years and above with complete urinary nickel, body mass index, and waist circumference data. Obesity was determined using BMI and waist circumference data. The multivariate linear regression and logistic regression models were utilized to detect the association between urinary nickel concentration and BMI, waist circumference, and incidence of obesity. After multivariable adjustment, the log-transformed urinary nickel concentration was inversely associated with BMI [β = -0.87; 95% confidence interval (CI): (-1.36, -0.38)] and waist circumference [β = -1.51; 95% CI: (-2.93, -0.08)]. Compared with the lowest tertile of urinary nickel, the β value and 95% CI of BMI and waist circumference for the highest tertile were β = -1.65.95% CI: (-2.85, -0.45) and β = -2.78, 95% CI: (-6.17, 0.62), respectively. The log-transformed urinary nickel concentration was also negatively associated with obesity status [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.81, 95% CI: (0.64, 1.01)]. Compared with the lowest tertile of urinary nickel, the adjusted OR and 95% CI of obesity status for the highest tertile were OR = 0.64 and 95% CI: (0.37, 1.12). Smooth curve fitting and the generalized additive model indicated that elevated urinary nickel concentration was associated with decreased BMI, waist circumference, and incidence of obesity. The negative association was consistent and robust in different subgroups, according to stratified analysis. This study found that nickel exposure may be negatively associated with BMI, waist circumference and incidence of obesity in US Adults.

Abstract
The results of environmental epidemiological studies regarding the relationship between human exposure to nickel and the risk of diabetes remain controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between nickel exposure and diabetes. PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase electronic databases were thoroughly searched from their inception to May 2023 to obtain relevant studies. The random-effects model was employed to determine pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Stratified and sensitivity analyses were also performed. Cochran Q test and I2 statistic were employed to assess heterogeneity between studies. Begg's and Egger's tests were employed to evaluate publication bias. The indicated studies were evaluated using the ROBINS-E risk of bias tool. The dose-response relationship between nickel in urine and diabetes risk was estimated by restricted cubic spline. A total of 12 studies with 30,018 participants were included in this study. In this meta-analysis, comparing the highest vs. lowest levels of nickel exposure, the pooled ORs for diabetes were 1.42 (95% confidence interval 1.14-1.78) for urine and 1.03 (0.57-1.86) for blood, respectively. A linear relationship between urinary nickel and diabetes risk was discovered in the dose-response analysis (P nonlinearity = 0.6198). Each 1 µg/L increase of urinary nickel, the risk of diabetes increased by 7% (OR = 1.07, 95% CI 1.04-1.10). The risk of diabetes was positively correlated with urine nickel exposure, whereas the risk was not significantly correlated with blood nickel. In the future, more high-quality prospective studies are needed to validate this conclusion.

Abstract
Objectives The prevalence of obesity is on the rise and is connected to numerous factors. However, the relationship between obesity and nickel has never been investigated. Our study aimed to explore the association between urinary nickel and obesity Status in adults. Methods From the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), 1,705 participants ≥18 years of age were enrolled. To explore further the relationship among urinary nickel, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference(WC), Weighted multivariate linear regression analyses and further subgroup analyzes were conducted. Results Urinary nickel does not correlate with BMI level but positively correlates with WC. In the subgroup analyzed according to sex, Urinary nickel has a positive correlation with BMI and WC in males but has a negative correlation in females. Secondary stratification analysis according to sex and race, Urinary nickel positively correlates with BMI in White males. It also positively correlates with WC in both White and Black males. Conclusions A correlation was found between urinary nickel levels and BMI and WC in adult males. Adult men, especially those already obese, may need to reduce nickel exposure.
