Abstract
Cryptococcosis is a rare infection that can affect the central nervous system (CNS), leading to neurological complications. Neurocryptococcoma, though uncommon, can present with significant morbidity. We report the case of a 31-year-old immunocompetent woman who developed a large posterior fossa neurocryptococcoma. The lesion was successfully treated with complete surgical resection via occipital craniotomy. Diagnosing a cryptococcal infection can be challenging due to its rarity and the variability of its presentation. Management typically involves either medical or surgical interventions based on lesion characteristics. This case highlights the importance of considering neurocryptococcoma in the differential diagnosis for patients with neurological symptoms, even in those without apparent immune deficiency.

Abstract
Cryptococcus gattii (C. gattii) has been considered a leading cause of meningitis in immunocompetent hosts in tropical and subtropical regions. Visual loss is common but hearing impairment is relatively infrequent in C. gattii meningitis. Notably, there have been limited studies on the etiology, and especially therapy of auditory and ocular complications associated with C. gattii meningitis. Here we report a case of reversible deafness and blindness treated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) surgery in C. gattii meningitis. This case indicated that elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) may play a role in the concurrent hearing and vision impairments associated with C. gattii meningitis and the early VPS surgery after the initiation of the antifungal therapy may effectively improve both hearing and vision in this condition.

Abstract
Cryptococcosis is an invasive systemic mycosis caused by Cryptococcus, a genus of yeast. Causative organisms for human cryptococcosis include Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii. Disease due to C.neoformans is conventionally seen in patients with underlying immunosuppression, whereas C.gattii-related infection is usually seen in immunocompetent people. The fact that the infection can occur among otherwise healthy individuals underscores the importance of having a necessary understanding of the pathophysiology and clinical and radiological presentations of the disease. We report a case of disseminated pulmonary and central nervous system (CNS) cryptococcosis in an apparently immunocompetent individual with unusual radiological findings necessitating probing for alternative diagnoses. We have attempted to supplement and revise the existing data on the radiological manifestations of C.gattii.

Abstract
Cryptococcosis is a disease caused by the pathogenic fungi Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, both environmental fungi that cause severe pneumonia and may even lead to cryptococcal meningoencephalitis. Although C. neoformans affects more fragile individuals, such as immunocompromised hosts through opportunistic infections, C. gattii causes a serious indiscriminate primary infection in immunocompetent individuals. Typically seen in tropical and subtropical environments, C. gattii has increased its endemic area over recent years, largely due to climatic factors that favor contagion in warmer climates. It is important to point out that not only C. gattii, but the Cryptococcus species complex produces a polysaccharidic capsule with immunomodulatory properties, enabling the pathogenic species of Cryptococccus to subvert the host immune response during the establishment of cryptococcosis, facilitating its dissemination in the infected organism. C. gattii causes a more severe and difficult-to-treat infection, with few antifungals eliciting an effective response during chronic treatment. Much of the immunopathology of this cryptococcosis is still poorly understood, with most studies focusing on cryptococcosis caused by the species C. neoformans. C. gattii became more important in the epidemiological scenario with the outbreaks in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, which resulted in phylogenetic studies of the virulent variant responsible for the severe infection in the region. Since then, the study of cryptococcosis caused by C. gattii has helped researchers understand the immunopathological aspects of different variants of this pathogen.

Abstract
Fungal infections are the most common secondary infections in debilitated individuals in a state of chronic disease or immunosuppression. Despite this, most fungal infections are neglected, mainly due to the lower frequency of their more severe clinical forms in immunocompetent individuals with a healthy background. However, over the past few years, several cases of severe fungal infections in healthy individuals have provoked a change in the epidemiological dynamics of fungal infections around the world, both due to recurrent outbreaks in previously infrequent regions and the greater emergence of more pathogenic fungal variants affecting healthy individuals, such as in the Cryptococcus genus. Therefore, before the arrival of a scenario of prevalent severe fungal infections, it is necessary to assess more carefully what are the real reasons for the increased incidence of fungal infection globally. What are the factors that are currently contributing to this new possible epidemiological dynamic? Could these be of a structural nature? Herein, we propose a discussion based on the importance of the virulence factors of glycoconjugate composition in the adaptation of pathogenic fungal species into the current scenario of increasing severity of these infections.

Abstract
We describe a case of chronic meningoencephalitis with hydrocephalus caused by Cryptococcus bacillisporus (VGIII) in an immunocompetent patient from Santa Cruz, Bolivia. This first report of a member of the Cryptococcus gattii species complex from Bolivia suggests that C. bacillisporus (VGIII) is present in this tropical region of the country and complements our epidemiological and clinical knowledge of this group of emerging fungal pathogens in South America.

Abstract
Cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus gattii, is a life threatening fungal infection with recently increasing prevalence. C. gattii is a species complex comprising multiple independent species. However, many biological characteristics and clinical features of cryptococcosis due to C. gattii are relatively less well defined. In this paper, we identify two cases of C. gattii infection, and laboratory findings of genotype VGI and VGII in two groups of apparently immunocompetent Chinese individuals respectively. Upon detailed review of all 35 cases of C. gattii infections, it was observed that C. gattii can cause debilitating illness in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Cryptococcosis due to C. gattii is a serious systemic fungal infection, with pulmonary central nervous system tropism. Epidemiologically, C. gattii infection is not only restricted in tropical and subtropical regions, but also in other geographical settings.

Abstract
Purpose of Review The increase in international travel in recent decades has contributed to the risk of acquiring diseases considered endemic to a region or country and the change in the epidemiology of these diseases. Endemic mycoses that may be acquired by travelers in the short or long term are endemic subcutaneous mycoses such as sporotrichosis and lobomycosis, while endemic systemic mycoses are a group of serious diseases including histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis. Herein, we review the current knowledge and highlight the most important aspects of these fungal infections in travelers. Recent Findings The most relevant advances in the study of these mycoses involve the epidemiological distribution; human mycoses can be fatal and there are few antifungal drugs available, increasing drug resistance, and a risk of emerging fungal diseases associated with climate change, as well as the increasing virulence, and the diagnostic strategies that may be limited in many countries. Summary Although endemic mycoses are relatively rare, they should be considered as potentially travel-related illnesses. A recent or late trip to an endemic country may guide the clinical suspicion, an early diagnosis, and the institution of effective therapy.

Abstract
Cryptococcus gattii is an etiologic agent of cryptococcosis, a potentially fatal disease that affects humans and animals. The successful infection of mammalian hosts by cryptococcal cells relies on their ability to infect and survive in macrophages. Such phagocytic cells present a hostile environment to intracellular pathogens via the production of reactive nitrogen and oxygen species, as well as low pH and reduced nutrient bioavailability. To overcome the low-metal environment found during infection, fungal pathogens express high-affinity transporters, including members of the ZIP family. Previously, we determined that functional zinc uptake driven by Zip1 and Zip2 is necessary for full C.gattiivirulence. Here, we characterized the ZIP3 gene of C. gattii, an ortholog of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATX2, which codes a manganese transporter localized to the membrane of the Golgi apparatus. Cryptococcal cells lacking Zip3 were tolerant to toxic concentrations of manganese and had imbalanced expression of intracellular metal transporters, such as the vacuolar Pmc1 and Vcx1, as well as the Golgi Pmr1. Moreover, null mutants of the ZIP3 gene displayed higher sensitivity to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and substantial alteration in the expression of ROS-detoxifying enzyme-coding genes. In line with these phenotypes, cryptococcal cells displayed decreased virulence in a non-vertebrate model of cryptococcosis. Furthermore, we found that the ZIP3 null mutant strain displayed decreased melanization and secretion of the major capsular component glucuronoxylomannan, as well as an altered extracellular vesicle dimensions profile. Collectively, our data suggest that Zip3 activity impacts the physiology, and consequently, several virulence traits of C. gattii.
