Differences in Perceptions of the Urban Acoustic Environment in Older Adults: A Systematic Review

Improvement and Validation of a Smart Road Traffic Noise Model Based on Vehicles Tracking Using Image Recognition: EAgLE 3.0

Noise coming from road traffic represents a major contributor to the high levels of noise to which people are continuously exposed-especially in urban areas-throughout all of Europe. Since it represents a very detrimental pollutant, the assessment of such noise is an important procedure. Noise levels can be measured or simulated, and, in this second case, for the building of a valid model, a proper collection of input data cannot be left out of consideration. In this paper, the authors present the development of a methodology for the collection of the main inputs for a road traffic noise model, i.e., vehicle number, category, and speed, from a video recording of traffic on an Italian highway. Starting from a counting and recognition tool already available in the literature, a self-written Python routine based on image inference has been developed for the instantaneous detection of the position and speed of vehicles, together with the categorization of vehicles (light or heavy). The obtained data are coupled with the CNOSSOS-EU model to estimate the noise power level of a single vehicle and, ultimately, the noise impact of traffic on the selected road. The results indicate good performance from the proposed model, with a mean error of -1.0 dBA and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.6 dBA.

Psychological and physiological effects of soundscapes: A systematic review of 25 experiments in the English and Chinese literature

The aim of this systematic review was to conduct a comprehensive and rigorous investigation of both psychological and physiological responses to, and audio-visual interactions with, soundscapes to present an overview of the current status and to provide suggestions for future research. Our literature search focused on empirical and quantitative studies of journal articles and gray literature in English and Chinese. This systematic review excluded literature related to pure music, religious sounds, humanistic sounds, historical sounds, medical research, and differences in materials used. The Joanna Briggs Institute's Checklist for Randomized Controlled Trials was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. Twenty-five studies were included, involving 1950 participants. The major findings of this systematic review were that: (1) there were significant associations between the psychological and physiological responses; (2) the audio-visual interaction affected the psychological and physiological responses; and (3) because of the high risk of bias of the included studies, interpretation of their findings should be cautious. Nevertheless, given that this systematic review has a higher level of evidence than a single study and the synthesized evidence identified in this review is aligned with the results of other studies, the studies reviewed herein together provide consistent evidence. Replications are important in empirical research to build trustworthy results. Future research should focus on the psychological responses of pleasantness, preference, tranquility, the eight semantic dimensions (ISO 12913-2:2018), and the 11 pairs of adjectives describing the soundscape (Ba et al., 2023) and the physiological responses of heart rate variability and salivary, and follow the CONSORT guidelines to improve the research quality. An integration of sensory modalities, environmental factors, contextual indicators, temporal data, demographic variables, socio-cultural factors, and psychological and physiological responses may provide deeper insights into how people experience and understand the acoustic environment in context.

Festivals and Events as Everyday Life in Montreal’s Entertainment District

Cities struggle to balance vitality and livability, and noise is at the center of many of these debates. Preconceived ideas on the sonic expectations and needs of groups of city users can be misleading, particularly in entertainment districts such as the Quartier des Spectacles in Montreal (CA). We investigated what life was like in QDS for its year-round users during the 2019 festival season (the last before the COVID-19 pandemic), building on insights from residents, workers and visitors collected through online surveys. Respondents described an overall positive view of their district marked by a diversity of experiences and frustrations, with subtle intragroup differences between residents and workers. Age was an important variable framing these experiences, but unexpectedly, older respondents enjoyed their life in QDS just as much as younger users. Dissatisfaction with residing or working in QDS was rarely geared toward the frequency or loudness of festivals, but rather to other everyday life situations. Emergent from the data, we argued for the development of soundscape personas to refer to typologies of users whose experiences differ in terms of sonic priorities and evaluations. Our findings could inform strategies for organizing large events in urban areas, maintaining an awareness of diversity of users.
