Correction of head movement by frame-to-frame image realignment for receptor imaging in positron emission tomography studies with [11C]raclopride and [11C]FLB 457

Inter-pass motion correction for whole-body dynamic PET and parametric imaging

Whole-body dynamic FDG-PET imaging through continuous-bed-motion (CBM) mode multi-pass acquisition protocol is a promising metabolism measurement. However, inter-pass misalignment originating from body movement could degrade parametric quantification. We aim to apply a non-rigid registration method for inter-pass motion correction in whole-body dynamic PET. 27 subjects underwent a 90-min whole-body FDG CBM PET scan on a Biograph mCT (Siemens Healthineers), acquiring 9 over-the-heart single-bed passes and subsequently 19 CBM passes (frames). The inter-pass motion correction was executed using non-rigid image registration with multi-resolution, B-spline free-form deformations. The parametric images were then generated by Patlak analysis. The overlaid Patlak slope Ki and y-intercept Vb images were visualized to qualitatively evaluate motion impact and correction effect. The normalized weighted mean squared Patlak fitting errors (NFE) were compared in the whole body, head, and hypermetabolic regions of interest (ROI). In Ki images, ROI statistics were collected and malignancy discrimination capacity was estimated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). After the inter-pass motion correction was applied, the spatial misalignment appearance between Ki and Vb images was successfully reduced. Voxel-wise normalized fitting error maps showed global error reduction after motion correction. The NFE in the whole body (p = 0.0013), head (p = 0.0021), and ROIs (p = 0.0377) significantly decreased. The visual performance of each hypermetabolic ROI in Ki images was enhanced, while 3.59% and 3.67% average absolute percentage changes were observed in mean and maximum Ki values, respectively, across all evaluated ROIs. The estimated mean Ki values had substantial changes with motion correction (p = 0.0021). The AUC of both mean Ki and maximum Ki after motion correction increased, possibly suggesting the potential of enhancing oncological discrimination capacity through inter-pass motion correction.

Mobile Terminal Equipment and Methods of Martial Arts Movement Correction in Intelligent Physical Education Environment

In recent years, the physical quality of middle school students in China has generally declined, which has attracted the attention of the state and the Ministry of education. With the development of Internet technology, China's physical education teaching environment has gradually become intelligent. This article mainly studies the mobile terminal equipment and methods of martial arts movement correction in the intelligent physical education environment. 21 young martial arts athletes were selected as the research objects. In the experiment, functional screening (FMS) was used to test the martial arts athletes, followed by FMS tests and scores. A video camera was used to record the motion test from the subjects' sagittal and frontal planes. Using wireless sensor technology to collect the athletes' motion signals, after the twelfth week, the FMS, SEBT, and the number of successful routines were tested on the two groups of athletes, respectively. The pre-test data and the post-correction data of the two test indicators were compared and analyzed. There is no significant difference. The necessary statistics and integration of the obtained data are carried out by using the calculation methods in sports statistics. The experimental data showed that the average total scores of FMS screening test of Changquan athletes and Taijiquan athletes were 14.71 ± 1.52 and 16.20 ± 1.32, respectively. The results of the research on the mobile terminal equipment and methods of martial arts movement correction in the intelligent sports environment show that the mobile terminal equipment can improve the independent training ability of athletes, and at the same time has a good correction effect on irregular movements.

Measurement of Striatal Dopamine Release Induced by Neuropsychological Stimulation in Positron Emission Tomography With Dual Injections of [11C]Raclopride

OBJECTIVES

Positron emission tomography (PET) with [¹¹C]raclopride has been applied to measure changes in the concentration of endogenous dopamine induced by pharmacological challenge or neuropsychological stimulation by evaluating the binding potential (BP) between the baseline and activated state. Recently, to reliably estimate BP in the activated state, a new approach with dual-bolus injections in a single PET scan was developed. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of applying this dual-bolus injection approach to measure changes in endogenous dopamine levels induced by cognitive tasks in humans.

METHODS

First, the reproducibility of BP estimation using the dual-bolus injection approach was evaluated using PET scans without stimulation in nine healthy volunteers. A 90-min scan was performed with bolus injections of [¹¹C]raclopride administered at the beginning of the scan and 45 min after the first injection. BPs in the striatum for the first injection (BP₁) and second injection (BP₂) were estimated using an extended simplified reference tissue model, and the mean absolute difference (MAD) between the two BPs was calculated. The MAD was also compared with the conventional bolus-plus-continuous infusion approach. Next, PET studies with a cognitive reinforcement learning task were performed on 10 healthy volunteers using the dual-bolus injection approach. The BP₁ at baseline and BP₂ at the activated state were estimated, and the reduction in BP was evaluated.

RESULTS

In the PET scans without stimulation, the dual-bolus injection approach showed a smaller MAD (<2%) between BP₁ and BP₂ than the bolus-plus-continuous infusion approach, demonstrating good reproducibility of this approach. In the PET scans with the cognitive task performance, the reduction in BP was not observed in the striatum by either approach, showing that the changes in dopamine level induced by the cognitive tasks performed in this study were not sufficient to be detected by PET.

CONCLUSION

Our results indicate that the cognitive task-induced changes in dopamine-related systems may be complex and difficult to measure accurately using PET scans. However, the proposed dual-bolus injection approach provided reliable BP estimates with high reproducibility, suggesting that it has the potential to improve the accuracy of PET scans for measuring changes in dopamine concentrations.

Simulation Study of a Frame-Based Motion Correction Algorithm for Positron Emission Imaging

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a functional non-invasive imaging modality that uses radioactive substances (radiotracers) to measure changes in metabolic processes. Advances in scanner technology and data acquisition in the last decade have led to the development of more sophisticated PET devices with good spatial resolution (1–3 mm of full width at half maximum (FWHM)). However, there are involuntary motions produced by the patient inside the scanner that lead to image degradation and potentially to a misdiagnosis. The adverse effect of the motion in the reconstructed image increases as the spatial resolution of the current scanners continues improving. In order to correct this effect, motion correction techniques are becoming increasingly popular and further studied. This work presents a simulation study of an image motion correction using a frame-based algorithm. The method is able to cut the acquired data from the scanner in frames, taking into account the size of the object of study. This approach allows working with low statistical information without losing image quality. The frames are later registered using spatio-temporal registration developed in a multi-level way. To validate these results, several performance tests are applied to a set of simulated moving phantoms. The results obtained show that the method minimizes the intra-frame motion, improves the signal intensity over the background in comparison with other literature methods, produces excellent values of similarity with the ground-truth (static) image and is able to find a limit in the patient-injected dose when some prior knowledge of the lesion is present.
