Abstract
BACKGROUND Fruit juices are one of the most non-alcoholic beverages consumed in the world. Essential elements and other nutrients present in fruit juices play an important role in human well-being. However, fruit juices may also contain potentially toxic elements at trace levels, causing health risks. OBJECTIVE The objective of this work was to develop an analytical methodology based on the preconcentration of lead using a new biodegradable hybrid material (BHM) composed of Rhodococcus erythropolis AW3 bacteria and Brassica napus hairy roots. METHODS The BHM was implemented in an online solid-phase extraction (SPE) system for the determination of lead in fruit juices by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). RESULTS Effects of critical parameters on lead retention were studied. Under optimal experimental conditions, extraction efficiency higher than 99.9% and an enrichment factor of 62.5 were achieved. The dynamic capacity of the BHM was 36 mg/g, which favored the reuse of the column for at least eight biosorption-desorption cycles. The LOD and LOQ for preconcentration of 5 mL of sample were 5.0 and 16.5 ng/L lead, respectively. The RSD was 4.8% (at 1 µg/L lead and n = 10). CONCLUSION The developed method was suitable for application to lead determination in different types of fruit juice. Abstract
A mixture of n-octanol and dithizone was introduced as an effective and novel extraction agent in a thin-film microextraction technique for the pre-concentration of cadmium ions. The extraction agent was immobilized on small pieces of porous polypropylene flat membrane as a supported liquid membrane. The analyte extraction was performed by immersing the modified film in the sample solution, and via a complex formation between the immobilized dithizone on the film and cadmium ions. After the thin-film microextraction process, the colored cadmium-dithizone complex was directly measured by a smartphone colorimetric analysis. Under optimized conditions, the linear dynamic range, the limit of detection, and the limit of quantification were 0.5-300.0, 0.1, and 0.4 μg L-1, respectively. The developed technique was successfully employed to quantify cadmium ions in water and food samples. The high relative recovery values (95.0-103.0%) along with relative standard deviations of less than 2.5% were obtained for the spiked samples.

Abstract
In the current study, it was aimed to determine the sediment in Sparus aurata (Linnaeus 1758) tissues and Salicornia europaea L. Cu, Zn Fe, Hg, Cd, Pb and Mn concentration distributions in Güllük Lagoon which is located in the south of Aegean Sea and under the influence of anthropogenic activities by means of metal pollution and health indices and to investigate the effects of these metals on public health. The concentration range of Cu, Zn, Fe, Hg, Cd, Pb and Mn in sediment samples was determined as 12.16-26.00, 1.62-2.03, 7.77-8.36, 7.52-16.15, 0.071-0.40, 7.99-13.74 and 12.11-12.63 mg kg-1, respectively. Cu and Hg concentrations in sediment were found to be higher than sediment quality guidelines standards. In addition, according to the enrichment factor (EF), Hg, Cd and Cu were found to show above moderate enrichment. Cu, Zn, Fe, Hg, Cd and Mn concentrations in S. aurata muscle tissue were 1.31 ± 2.30, 1.01 ± 0.24, 3.43 ± 0.75, 2.79 ± 0.85, 0.01 ± 0.01 and 1.80 ± 1.12 mg kg-1, respectively. S. europaea heavy metals (HMs) concentrations were determined as Cu = 10.97 ± 3.20, Zn = 0.74 ± 0.62, Fe = 5.69 ± 0.22, Hg = 9.62 ± 8.84, Cd = 0.53 ± 0.33, Pb = 0.22 ± 0.26 and Mn = 8.61 ± 0.14 mg kg-1. It was seen that Hg in S. aurata muscle tissue and Hg in S. europaea concentrations exceeded the limit values determined for consumption purposes. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) values were found to be < 1 for S. aurata and S. europaea. When all these results were considered, it was determined that the metals that could pose a potential ecological and health risk were Hg, Cd and Cu in the study area.

Abstract
Surface functionalization of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, also known as MXenes, is a powerful approach for modification of their physical and chemical properties for new applications. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis of a bifunctional Ti3C2Tx MXene modified with amine and thiol groups through a facile condensation reaction. We successfully employed the resulting NH2/SH-Ti3C2Tx MXene as a solid phase in the ultrasonic-assisted dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (d-μ-SPE) method for the analytical determination of heavy metals at trace levels in food and soil samples. The prepared NH2/SH-Ti3C2Tx MXene showed remarkable performance in the ultrasonic-assisted d-μ-SPE method with limits of detection of 0.12 and 2.30 ng mL-1, with linear dynamic ranges of 0.50-90 μg L-1 and 10-120 μg L-1 for cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+) ions, respectively. Furthermore, the extraction efficiencies were greater than 97%, with a relative standard deviation of less than 3% for five separate batch experiments in the determination of 5.0 μg L-1 of Cd2+ and Pb2+. This study shows that NH2/SH-Ti3C2Tx can be used as a simple, rapid, reliable, selective, and sensitive material in the d-μ-SPE method for the trace determination of Cd2+ and Pb2+ in soil and agricultural products. This study demonstrates the utility of MXenes for analytical chemistry and suggests that further advances in methods for the functionalization of MXenes can open new applications for these already exciting materials.

Abstract
In this study, a simple one-step method was applied for extraction and determination of lead and cadmium. The significant variables in extraction and pre-concentration were identified using analysis of variance and their behavior was modeled. Dual-template imprinted polymer was synthesized on modified Mesoporous silica structures coated with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. The optimum condition was 6.12 for pH, 40.62 mg for the polymer amount and 17.38 for the ultrasonic time. Concentration range, correlation coefficient, limit of detection and relative standard deviation for lead were reported to be 0.5-950, 0.9988, 0.35 μg L-1 and 3.5%, respectively. For cadmium the above mentioned figure of merits were 0.3-980, 0.9969, 0.15 μg L-1 and 2.4%, respectively. The adsorption capacities for lead and cadmium were reported to be 10.28 and 10.38, while their imprinting factors were 5.89 and 6.36, respectively.

Abstract
Herein, we report a facile synthesis of Ni/NiO/SnO2 hybrids where the core-shell-type Ni/NiO nanoparticle is decorated with the SnO2 nanoparticle to make a heterojunction and their potential evaluation for simultaneous removal of organic and inorganic pollutants. The metallic nickel core of the nanoparticle helps to separate easily from water magnetically and restricts the possible secondary contamination. The formation of semiconductor-semiconductor heterojunction enhances the photocatalytic activity to degrade the organic pollutants. The nanomaterial was characterized using microscopic, spectroscopic, and BET analyses. Results indicated an efficient degradation of ~ 94% of crystal violet in 40 min. An adsorption capacity of ~ 530 mg g-1 and ~ 650 mg g-1 of cadmium and lead ions, respectively, was found for single-component adsorption experiments, and ~ 520 mg g-1 and ~ 720 mg g-1 of cadmium and lead ions, respectively, were found for multi-component experiments. This observation suggested that the lead and cadmium ion adsorption process is affected by the synergistic and antagonistic effects, respectively. However, no significant change in the photocatalytic activity was observed for multi-component experiments. Results indicated that the process followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics irrespective of the number of pollutants present. An excellent adsorption capacity of metal ions and photodegradation capability of organic dye in multi-component solution, and possible reusability of the nanoparticle, make the Ni/NiO/SnO2 a potential material for simultaneous removal of organic and inorganic pollutants.

Abstract
The present research describes the successful preparation of melon peel biochar modified with CoFe2O4 (MPBC/CoFe2O4) followed by its usage as a new sorbent to separate, preconcentrate, and determine the toxic heavy metal ions by magnetic solid-phase extraction. The metal ion desorption was performed by 0.1 M HCl solution with a volume of 5.0 mL. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was utilized for detection of the analyte levels. SEM-EDX, TEM, XRD, and FTIR techniques were carried out to illuminate the structure of MPBC/CoFe2O4. The fundamental variables affecting the adsorption and elution efficiencies of the analyte ions including solution pH, MPBC/CoFe2O4 amount, type and concentration of eluent, adsorption and desorption equilibrium time, and sample volume were optimized. The detection limits were calculated as 0.41, 1.82, and 3.16 µg L-1 for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively, with the relative standard deviation of lower than 4.2%. There were no substantial interference effects on the analyte ion recovery due to the presence of foreign ions at high levels. Five minutes of contact time was adequate to attain the adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of MPBC/CoFe2O4 was obtained as 106.4, 65.4, and 188.7 mg g-1 for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively, by utilizing Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second order model is favorable to identify the adsorption kinetics. The method was validated by spike/recovery test, and then, it was successfully implemented to determine the aforementioned analyte levels in sea and stream water, pepper, black cabbage, eggplant, and tomato samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The natural concentration of trace elements in water and soil depends on the geological, geomorphological, and climate characteristics of the region. The rapid increase of technology in recent years has increased concentrations of trace elements in nature. OBJECTIVE Separation and enrichment methods are needed to detect trace amounts of heavy metals that cannot be detected due to the detection limit of the instruments or the matrix effect in samples. Recently, low hazard solvents compatible with green chemistry have been used in preconcentration/separation studies of Cd(II). METHODS Switchable solvent-based liquid phase microextraction is an environmentally-friendly, simple, and fast procedure for the determination of Cd(II) ions in environmental samples combined with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). RESULTS The switchable polarity solvent was prepared with N,N-dimethyl-n-octylamine. 2-(5-Bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-(diethylamino) phenol was used as the complexing agent. Important parameters such as pH, amount of switchable polarity solvent and NaOH, as well as ligand and sample volume, all of which might affect the microextraction efficiency were optimized. Under optimal experimental conditions, linear range was found to be between 5 and 500 µg/L. The limit of detection, preconcentration factor, and relative standard deviation were 0.89 μg/L, 150, and 3.2%, respectively. HIGHLIGHTS The accuracy of our method was confirmed by the analysis of certified reference material SPS-WW1 Batch 106 (Waste Waters). The developed procedure was successfully applied to determine the cadmium contents of environmental water samples. We believe that this environmentally-friendly method will be useful in detecting Cd(II) ions in water samples.

Abstract
Direct electrochemical detection in real food samples remains challenging due to the fouling and interference by abundant interference components. Herein, we report an electrochemical sensing platform based on binary assembly of silica nanochannels and polydimethylsiloxane that is able to detect Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real food samples without complex pretreatments. Using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the electrochemical detection consists of electro-deposition of metal species and subsequent anodic stripping in the modified silica-nanochannels. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges were obtained from 4 to 1500 μg L-1 for Pb2+ and 30 to 900 μg L-1 for Cd2+. The relative standard deviations were 2.9% and 3.6% for Pb2+ and Cd2+ of 300 μg L-1. Without tedious pretreatments, the quantitative detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real juice and beverage samples was successfully performed, revealing that the developed sensor possesses excellent anti-interference and practicability properties for unprocessed food.

Abstract
This work proposes the conventional sonochemical synthesis of nanoparticles of tin (IV) oxide on reduced graphene oxide (rGOS@SnO2) influencing the formation of a composite with enhanced properties. The combination of SnO2 nanoparticles with rGOS weakens the accumulation in layered structures of the latter system, which leads to better exposure of SnO2 active sites and thus increases the conductivity of rGOS@SnO2 composite. This validates the improved electro-catalytic activity of the composite based on previous reports for its successful utilization in the electrochemical determination of toxic contaminants. The quantitative determination of mercury ions, through the use of the electrochemical sensor based on rGOS@SnO2 manifests several advantages such as simple operator, promptness, cost effectiveness and time independency when compared to other traditional techniques. The fabricated sensor displays two wide linear responses in the range of 0.25-705.3 μM for mercury ions, with a rapid response time about 1 s, and with a high sensitivity of 10.18 μA μM-1 cm-2 under optimized conditions. The accumulation of traces of mercury in the bodies of fish in the marine eco system marks the significance of its detection in real samples. The satisfactory results of the proposed sensor establish the supreme efficacy of layered nanomaterials in conjunction with nanoparticles for the simple, rapid and efficient detection of pollutants in food and biological samples.

Abstract
The aim of the present work is to develop an efficient, simple and selective moreover cost-effective method for the extractive spectrophotometric determination of copper(II) by using the Schiff base 4-(4'-chlorobenzylideneimino)-3-methyl-5-mercapto-1, 2, 4-triazole [CBIMMT]. This chromogenic reagent forms a yellow coloured complex with copper(II) in acetate buffer at pH4.2. The copper(II) complex with ligand is instantly extracted into chloroform and shows a maximum absorbance at 414nm which remains stable for >48h. The composition of extracted complex is found to be 1:2 [copper(II): reagent] which was ascertained using Job's method of continuous variation, mole ratio method and slope ratio method. Under optimal conditions, the copper(II) complex in chloroform adheres to Beer's law up to 17.5μgmL-1 of copper(II). The optimum concentration range obtained from Ringbom's plot is from 5μgmL-1 to 17.5μgmL-1. The molar absorptivity, Sandell's sensitivity and enrichment factor of the extracted copper(II) chelate are 0.33813×104Lmol-1cm-1, 0.01996μgcm-2 and 2.49 respectively. In the extraction of copper(II), several affecting factors including the solution pH, ligand concentration, equilibrium time, effect of foreign ions are optimized. The interfering effects of various cations and anions were also studied and use of masking agents enhances the selectivity of the method. The chromogenic sulphur containing reagent, 4-(4'-chlorobenzylideneimino)-3-methyl-5-mercapto-1, 2, 4-triazole has been synthesized in a single step with high purity and yield. The synthesized reagent has been successfully applied first time for determination of copper(II). The reagent forms stable chelate with copper(II) in buffer medium instantly and quantitatively extracted in chloroform within a minute. The method is successfully applied for the determination of copper(II) in various synthetic mixtures, complexes, fertilizers, environmental samples such as food samples, leafy vegetables, and water samples. The results are compared with those obtained with a reference procedure. Good agreement was attained. All the obtained results are indicative of a convenient, fast method for the extraction and quantification of micro levels of copper(II) from various environmental matrices without use of sophisticated instrumentation and procedure. The method showed a relative standard deviation of 0.42%.

Abstract
Edible mushrooms are widely usedtoday but the heavy metal pollution of edible mushrooms is not conducive to its industrialization. A novel chloromethylated polystyrene-g-2-adenine chelating resin (AR resin) with simple technology, high adsorption capacity, significant selectivity, and good regenerability was synthesized. Combined with the UV-Vis method, it was applied to mercury preconcentration and determination. The results indicated that the AR resin is essentially free from interferences, which can contribute to accurate determination in waters and foods. Optimization of the resin synthesis was carried out by using response surface methodology. The adsorption properties of the resin for Hg(II) were investigated by batch and column experiments. The statically and dynamic saturated adsorption capacities were 383.4 and 417.0 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic and equilibrium data were well fitted to the second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Furthermore, the resin and its metal complexes were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract
A preconcentration procedure for heavy metal ions in biological and water samples has been presented. The procedure is based on the sorption of Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ on cellulose nanoparticles modified with folic acid. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and BET measurements. Potentiometric titration is used to prove the complexation between metal ions and the modified cellulose as well as to calculate the cation-exchange capacity of the sorbent. The influences of the analytical parameters including pH, amount of adsorbent, shaking time, temperature, conditions of desorption, and the effects of matrix ions were studied. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curves for Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ were linear in the range of 2.7–200, 0.5–50, 0.37–150, and 10–300 μg L−1, respectively. The detection limits (3s, n = 10) for Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ were 0.81, 0.15, 0.11, and 3.9 μg L−1, respectively. The proposed method offers a preconcentration factor of 200 for all of the ions studied and an enhancement factor for Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+ of 40.0, 30.8, 40.4, and 34.2, respectively. The accuracy of the suggested method was tested by analyzing spiked samples. The method was successfully applied to the determination of these metal ions in water and blood samples.

In this paper, we report a simple and rapid solid phase extraction system for the separation/preconcentration and determination of Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Fe(III), Cr(III), Pb(II), and Zn(II) ions by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). This method is based upon the retention of metal ions on a column packed with poly[N-(3-methyl-1H-indole-1-yl)]-2-methacrylamide-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulphonic acid-co divinylbenzene] (MMAD) resin as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent at pH 8. At the optimized conditions, the limits of detection (3 s/b) between 0.12 and 1.6 μg L(-1), preconcentration factor of 100, and the relative standard deviation of ⩽1.8% were achieved (n=10). The accuracy of the method was verified by analyzing certified reference materials (CRMs) and performing recovery experiments. The developed method was successfully applied to the various natural water, meat products and baby food samples. The recoveries of analyte ions were found in added real samples and CRMs from 95% to 102%.

Abstract
Solid-phase extraction is one the most useful and efficient techniques for sample preparation, purification, cleanup, preconcentration, and determination of heavy metals at trace levels. In this paper, functionalized MCM-48 nanoporous silica with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol was applied for trace determination of copper, lead, cadmium, and nickel in water and seafood samples. The experimental conditions such as pH, sample and eluent flow rate, type, concentration and volume of the eluent, breakthrough volume, and effect of coexisting ions were optimized for efficient solid-phase extraction of trace heavy metals in different water and seafood samples. The content of solutions containing the mentioned heavy metals was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), and the limits of detection were 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.9 ng mL(-1) for cadmium, copper, nickel, and lead, respectively. Recoveries and precisions were >98.0 and <4%, respectively. The adsorption capacity of the modified nanoporous silica was 178 mg g(-1) for cadmium, 110 mg g(-1) for copper, 98 mg g(-1) for nickel, and 210 mg g(-1) for lead, respectively. The functionalized MCM-48 nanoporous silica with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol was characterized by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis (CHN), and N2 adsorption surface area measurement.
