Investigation of Chlorpyrifos and Its Transformation Products in Fruits and Spices by Combining Electrochemistry and Liquid Chromatography Coupled to Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Residue determination and decline pattern of abamectin and fenpyroximate in okra fruits: a prelude to risk assessment

This study developed and validated an LC-MS/MS analytical method for determining abamectin and fenpyroximate residues in okra fruits. The method optimization focused on chromatographic separation and ionization conditions, adding formic acid and ammonium formate to enhance ionization efficiency and signal sensitivity. Validation was performed according to SANTE guidelines, demonstrating good selectivity, linearity (R 2 > 0.998), precision, recovery, and minimal matrix effects (14.6% for abamectin and 5.2% for fenpyroximate). The limit of detection (LOD) was set at 0.0006 mg kg-1 for abamectin and 0.0002 mg kg-1 for fenpyroximate, while the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.002 mg kg-1 and 0.001 mg kg-1, respectively. Precision was within acceptable limits, with intra-day RSD of 11.4% for abamectin and 7.6% for fenpyroximate. Recovery ranged from 84.2% to 98.6%, meeting the acceptable 70-120% range. Persistence studies indicated that abamectin and fenpyroximate residues dissipated over time, with half-lives of 2.3 and 2.45 days, respectively. The pre-harvest interval (PHI) required for residues to fall below the maximum residue limit (MRL) was estimated to be 2.6 days for abamectin and 6.9 days for fenpyroximate. The risk quotient was assessed based on the Egyptian adult consumers' consumption of okra, ensuring a negligible risk.

Notifications on Pesticide Residues in the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF)

Pesticides are commonly used to protect plants against various pests and to preserve crops, but their residues can be harmful for human health. They are the third most widely reported hazard category in the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). The purpose of the study was to identify the most frequently notified pesticides in the RASFF in 1981–2020, considering: year, notification type, product category, origin country, notifying country, notification basis, distribution status and action taken. The data from the RASFF database was processed using: filtering, transposition, pivot tables and then subjected to cluster analysis: joining (tree clustering) and two-way joining methods. Pesticides were most commonly reported in fruits and vegetables and herbs and spices following border controls and rejections. The products usually came from India or Turkey and were not placed on the market or were not distributed and then destroyed. The effectiveness of the European Union border posts in terms of hazards detection and mutual information is important from the point of view of protecting the internal market and ensuring public health. It is also necessary to increase the awareness of pesticide users through training and the activity of control authorities in the use of pesticides.

Validation of LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous determination of chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, imidacloprid and some of their metabolites in maize silage

In this study, a validation of a multi-residue analysis method was performed for the simultaneous analysis of chlorpyrifos (CHL), deltamethrin (DEL) and Imidacloprid (IMI) residues and some of their metabolites in maize silage, by LC MS/MS. Extraction was conducted with acetonitrile acidified with 1% acetic acid. To avoid the matrix effect, a matrix matched calibration was used. The method was validated according to the SANTE/12682/2019 Guidelines. Selectivity, linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), trueness (recovery %) and precision (intra-day and inter-day) parameters were evaluated in line with the SANTE document. The linearities of all compounds were quite confident (R²≥ 0.98) and no interference was observed. The LOD and LOQ values were between 2.76 µg kg^-1 to 53.61 µg kg^-1 and 9.19 µg kg^-1 to 178.71 µg kg^-1, respectively. The recovery, repeatability RDS_r and reproducibility RDS_R values of compounds were calculated between 93.7-109.2%, 1-15%, and 1-13%, respectively. Consequently, results obtained with the evaluation of all parameters were found to be compatible with the SANTE validation criteria, so the method was reliable, effective and easy to use for the detection of insecticides and metabolites in maize silage with LC MS/MS.

Pesticide Residues and Their Metabolites in Grapes and Wines from Conventional and Organic Farming System

In this study, the occurrence of pesticide residues and their metabolites in grapes and wines was investigated. A targeted analysis of 406 pesticide residues in 49 wine and grape samples from organic and conventional production were performed using the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) extraction method, followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Multiple residues (>4 residues/sample) were detected in 22 tested samples. The most commonly detected residues were fungicides (e.g., boscalid) and insecticides (e.g., methoxyfenozide). An ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry method (UHPLC-(HR)MS) was used for screening of pesticide metabolites. We also provide a method and database for detecting pesticide metabolites (extending our previously published database to 49 metabolites originating from 25 pesticides). An introduced strategy of targeted screening of pesticide metabolites was applied for authentication of 27 organic grapes and wines. In total, 23 samples were free of quantifiable residues/detected metabolites or contained residues approved for organic production.

Transformation Products of Organic Contaminants and Residues-Overview of Current Simulation Methods

The formation of transformation products (TPs) from contaminants and residues is becoming an increasing focus of scientific community. All organic compounds can form different TPs, thus demonstrating the complexity and interdisciplinarity of this topic. The properties of TPs could stand in relation to the unchanged substance or be more harmful and persistent. To get important information about the generated TPs, methods are needed to simulate natural and manmade transformation processes. Current tools are based on metabolism studies, photochemical methods, electrochemical methods, and Fenton’s reagent. Finally, most transformation processes are based on redox reactions. This review aims to compare these methods for structurally different compounds. The groups of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, brominated flame retardants, and mycotoxins were selected as important residues/contaminants relating to their worldwide occurrence and impact to health, food, and environmental safety issues. Thus, there is an increasing need for investigation of transformation processes and identification of TPs by fast and reliable methods.
