Direct Dimethyl Ether Fuel Cell with Much Improved Performance

Electrochemistry of ethanol and dimethyl ether at a Pt electrode in a protic ionic liquid: the electrode poisoning mechanism

A protic ionic liquid (PIL), N,N-diethyl-N-methyl ammonium trifluoromethane sulfonate, [dema][TfO] was synthesized and confirmed using 1H-NMR and ion chromatography (IC). The surface electrocatalysis of ethanol (EtOH) and dimethyl ether (DME) was investigated on a polycrystalline Pt electrode in a PIL using a cyclic voltammetry technique. The voltammetry response shows that surface Pt-oxides/hydroxides (PtOH/PtO) are formed due to the oxidation of trace water (240 ppm determined by coulometric Karl-Fischer (FT) titration) in [dema][TfO] which plays a pivotal role during the electrocatalytic oxidation of EtOH and DME in the PIL. Oxidation of EtOH and DME coincides with coverage of the Pt surface by the adsorbed oxide species that helps to activate both processes by oxidizing the adsorbed poisoning CO and CO-like intermediate species via a 'bifunctional' reaction mechanism. The influence of temperature was investigated to obtain quantitative and qualitative information on the kinetics of EtOH oxidation. Higher activation energies are measured for EtOH oxidation in [dema][TfO] than in aqueous electrolytes due to the low water content and high viscosity of the PIL. This study gave a basic insight into the mechanism of EtOH and DME oxidation reactions, and the Pt-electrode poisoning species formation mechanism in the neoteric electrolyte medium is electrochemically investigated and reported.

Enhancement of oxidation of dimethyl ether through application of zirconia matrix for immobilization of noble metal catalytic nanoparticles

Electrocatalytic activity of Pt and bimetallic PtRu nanoparticles (both Vulcan supported and unsupported) toward electrooxidation of dimethyl ether (DME), a potential small organic molecule fuel, in an acid medium (0.5 mol dm−3 H2SO4) has been significantly enhanced by dispersing them over a thin film of zirconia (ZrO2). The enhancement effects concern increases of the DME electrocatalytic current densities recorded under both cyclic voltammetric and chronoamperometric conditions. Similar effects have been observed for the oxidation of methanol. Regarding the dissimilar DME electrooxidation mechanisms at Pt and PtRu catalytic centers, the activating capabilities of zirconia seem to originate from the high population of reactive –OH groups favoring mobility of protons and the capability of inducing the oxidative removal of poisoning (CO-type) intermediates both at platinum and ruthenium catalytic sites. In the presence of the zirconia matrix, the onset potential for the oxidation of DME (particularly at PtRu) is shifted more than 50 mV toward less positive potentials. Mutual metal-support interactions are also postulated.

Electrochemical Characterization of Low-Temperature Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells using Direct and Alternate Current Methods

Here, we report for the first time the results of systematic characterization of a low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane direct ethanol fuel cell using DC and AC electrochemical methods. Model catalysts (carbon supported Pt nanoparticles) painted on carbon paper are used as anode and cathode. Influence of physical parameters, such as cell temperature, current density, and ethanol concentration, and anode fuel flow rate on overall cell impedance is studied. Analysis of the obtained impedance spectra in connection with DC measurements allows us to comment on cell properties and to separate different contributions to the overall cell polarization. Our results suggest that the cell impedance is dominated by anode faradaic impedance, with a small or negligible contribution from cathode faradaic impedance. The anode impedance depends strongly on current density and cell temperature, but is not significantly influenced by ethanol concentration. Presence of anode mass-transfer impedance, even when ethanol was fed to the cell in high excess, is confirmed. Based on the results, we conclude that changes in ethanol electro-oxidation mechanism might manifest themselves on the impedance spectra in the low-frequency inductive loop. Nonetheless, further studies involving equivalent circuit modelling are needed to determine the exact influence of the cell parameters on the anode kinetics.

The atmospheric oxidation of dimethyl, diethyl, and diisopropyl ethers. The role of the intramolecular hydrogen shift in peroxy radicals

The atmospheric oxidation mechanisms of dimethyl ether (DME), diethyl ether (DEE) and diisopropyl ether (DiPE) are studied by using quantum chemistry and unimolecular reaction theory (RRKM-ME) calculations. For the peroxy radical CH3OCH2O2˙ from DME, a barrier height of ∼ 85 kJ mol(-1) is found for its intramolecular H-shift to ˙CH2OCH2OOH, which can recombine rapidly with the atmospheric O2. RRKM-ME calculations obtain an effective rate of ∼ 0.1 s(-1) at 298 K for the formation of ˙O2CH2OCH2OOH. For similar radicals in DEE and DiPE, effective rates are 1.6 s(-1) and 1.1 s(-1), respectively. In the atmosphere, these unimolecular reactions are fast enough to compete with the bimolecular reactions with NO and/or HO2, especially when [NO] is low. The fates of radicals after the H-shifts are also examined here. Several subsequent reactions are found to recycle OH radicals. New mechanisms are proposed on the basis of present calculations and are consistent with previous experimental results. In the atmosphere, the routes via H-shifts represent an auto-oxidation of these ethers with no involvement of NOx and therefore no O3 formation, and also a self-cleaning mechanism of organic compounds due to recycling of OH radicals. Some of the end products are highly oxidized with multifunctional groups and high O : C ratios, suggesting their low volatility and potential contribution to secondary organic aerosols.
