Deep Learning Adapted to Differential Neural Networks Used as Pattern Classification of Electrophysiological Signals

This manuscript presents the design of a deep differential neural network (DDNN) for pattern classification. First, we proposed a DDNN topology with three layers, whose learning laws are derived from a Lyapunov analysis, justifying local asymptotic convergence of the classification error and the weights of the DDNN. Then, an extension to include an arbitrary number of hidden layers in the DDNN is analyzed. The learning laws for this general form of the DDNN offer a contribution to the deep learning framework for signal classification with biological nature and dynamic structures. The DDNN is used to classify electroencephalographic signals from volunteers that perform an identification graphical test. The classification results show exponential growth in the signal classification accuracy from 82 percent with one layer to 100 percent with three hidden layers. Working with DDNN instead of static deep neural networks (SDNN) represents a set of advantages, such as processing time and training period reduction up to almost 100 times, and the increment of the classification accuracy while working with less hidden layers than working with SDNN, which are highly dependent on their topology and the number of neurons in each layer. The DDNN employed fewer neurons due to the induced feedback characteristic.

A novel method for financial distress prediction based on sparse neural networks with $$L_{1/2}$$ regularization

Corporate financial distress is related to the interests of the enterprise and stakeholders. Therefore, its accurate prediction is of great significance to avoid huge losses from them. Despite significant effort and progress in this field, the existing prediction methods are either limited by the number of input variables or restricted to those financial predictors. To alleviate those issues, both financial variables and non-financial variables are screened out from the existing accounting and finance theory to use as financial distress predictors. In addition, a novel method for financial distress prediction (FDP) based on sparse neural networks is proposed, namely FDP-SNN, in which the weight of the hidden layer is constrained with \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$L_{1/2}$$\end{document}L1/2 regularization to achieve the sparsity, so as to select relevant and important predictors, improving the predicted accuracy. It also provides support for the interpretability of the model. The results show that non-financial variables, such as investor protection and governance structure, play a key role in financial distress prediction than those financial ones, especially when the forecast period grows longer. By comparing those classic models proposed by predominant researchers in accounting and finance, the proposed model outperforms in terms of accuracy, precision, and AUC performance.

Real-Time Mobile-Based Electrocardiogram System for Remote Monitoring of Patients with Cardiac Arrhythmias

In this study, we propose an electrocardiogram (ECG) system for the simultaneous and remote monitoring of multiple heart patients. It consists of three main components: patient, sever, and monitoring units. The patient unit uses a wearable miniature sensor that continuously measures ECG signals and sends them to a smart mobile phone via a Bluetooth connection. In the mobile device, the ECG signals can be stored, displayed on screen, and automatically transmitted to a distant server unit over the internet; the server stores ECG data from several patients. Health care stakeholders use a monitoring unit to retrieve the ECG signals of multiple patients at any time from the server for display and real-time automatic analysis. The analysis includes segmentation of the ECG signal into separate heartbeats followed by arrhythmia detection and classification. When compared to existing real-time ECG systems, where the detection of abnormalities is usually performed using simple rules, the proposed system implements a real-time classification module that is based on a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Extensive experimental results on ECG data obtained from a TechPatientTM simulator, a real person, and 20 records from the MIT arrhythmia database are reported and discussed.
