Abstract
The aim of the study was to verify in a cardio-oncological model experiment if conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) fed to rats with mammary tumors affect the content of selected macro- and microelements in their myocardium. The diet of Sprague-Dawley females was supplemented either with CLA isomers or with safflower oil. In hearts of rats suffering from breast cancer, selected elements were analyzed with a quadrupole mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma ionization (ICP-MS). In order to better understand the data trends, cluster analysis, principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis were applied. Mammary tumors influenced macro- and microelements content in the myocardium to a greater extent than applied diet supplementation. Significant influences of diet (p = 0.0192), mammary tumors (p = 0.0200) and interactions of both factors (p = 0.0151) were documented in terms of Fe content. CLA significantly decreased the contents of Cu and Mn (p = 0.0158 and p = 0.0265, respectively). The level of Ni was significantly higher (p = 0.0073), which was more pronounced in groups supplemented with CLA. The obtained results confirmed antioxidant properties of CLA and the relationship with Se deposition. Chemometric techniques distinctly showed that the coexisting pathological process induced differences to the greater extent than diet supplementation in the elemental content in the myocardium, which may impinge on cardiac tissue's susceptibility to injuries.

Abstract
Supplementation with iron and folic acid is widely recommended in women of childbearing age and during pregnancy; however, the effect of such supplementation on mineral status is not well-known. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of oral iron and folic acid, administered together and separately, on copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium concentrations in the tissues of rats with a deficiency of both these micronutrients. The experiment was performed on 8-week-old female Wistar rats. In the first stage of the experiment, the animals were randomly assigned to a control group of rats fed the standard diet (AIN-93 M), and to a study group of rats fed a diet deficient in iron and folate. The study group was then randomly divided to four groups: group D was fed a deficit diet, group FE was fed a deficit diet with iron gluconate, the FOL group was fed a deficit diet with folate acid, and the FEFOL group was fed a deficit diet with iron gluconate and folate acid. After 2, 10, and 21 days of the intervention, ten animals from each group were killed. Mineral concentrations were assayed in the liver, spleen, pancreas, heart, and kidneys using atomic absorption spectrometry. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 12.0 with the ANOVA test (p < 0.05). It was found that separate supplementation with iron and folic acid significantly decreased copper concentrations in tissues. The deficit in iron and folic acid decreased, and their simultaneous supplementation increased calcium content in the organs. Separate and simultaneous supplementation decreased magnesium status in deficient rats. In conclusion, iron and folic acid, supplemented separately or simultaneously, affect the copper, calcium, and magnesium level in tissues.

Abstract
Although simultaneous supplementation of iron and folic acid is justified, the potential interactions between these micronutrients and other elements are poorly known. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of iron and folic acid supplementation on the levels of selected essential and toxic elements in the serum of micronutrient-deficient young women. A total of 40 women participated in this study and were divided into two groups: study group (n = 23) (with iron and folate deficiency) and control group (n = 17). The study group received iron and folic acid supplements for 3 months. Blood samples were collected at baseline and after the completion of the study period. Women completed a 3-day food intake record. We calculated the body mass index (BMI) of all the participants. Cellular morphology was analyzed in whole blood, and biochemical parameters were determined in serum. Elements were measured in serum by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). According to our results, in the case of the study group, the supplementation of iron and folic acid restored their levels; however, it caused a significant decrease in the level of zinc, calcium, and magnesium. In the case of the control group, at the end of the study period, there was a marked decrease in the level of iron. Interestingly, there was an increase in the level of arsenic and vanadium in both groups. In conclusion, simultaneous supplementation of iron and folic acid impairs the level of zinc, calcium, and magnesium in women of childbearing age.

Abstract
The effects of Spirulina maxima supplementation on calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc status were studied in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 50 obese subjects with treated hypertension, each randomized to receive 2 g of spirulina or a placebo daily for 3 months. At baseline and after treatment, the calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc concentration in plasma was assessed. It was found that 3 months of S. maxima supplementation resulted in a significant decrease in the iron level in the plasma of obese patients. In conclusion, this is the first clinical study on the influence of spirulina supplementation on mineral status in obese patients with hypertension. Spirulina supplementation affects the iron status of obese Caucasians with well-treated hypertension.

Abstract
In the treatment of lifestyle diseases, including metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, it is important to lower body mass and fat tissue, and consequently, to increase insulin-sensitivity. Unfortunately, it often happens that low-energy diet which would lower overweight is not observed and, thus, it does not bring the expected effects. This paper discusses the influence of three diets-control, high-fructose, and high-fatty diet-on absorption of energy from food in order to transform it into body mass. The kJ/g ratio which describes this process has been calculated. In the tested diets, the addition of fructose (79.13 ± 2.47 kJ/g) or fat (82.48 ± 2.28 kJ/g) results in higher transformation of energy into body mass than in the case of control diet (89.60 ± 1.86 kJ/g). The addition of Na[VO(O2)2(4,4′-Me2-2,2′-bpy)]•8H2O (where 4,4′-Me2-2,2′-bpy = 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine) results in statistical increase of that ratio: fructose diet (86.88 ± 0.44 kJ/g), fat diet (104.68 ± 3.01 kJ/g), and control diet (115.98 ± 0.56 kJ/g), respectively. Fat diet statistically influences the decrease of kidney mass in comparison to the other diets. The application of the tested vanadium compound results also in the statistical decrease of the fatty liver caused by fructose and fat diet.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the intake of L-arginine alone and of L-arginine with vitamin C on mineral concentration in rats fed with a high-fat diet, and to assess the lipid glucose, insulin, and total antioxidant status (TAS) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha serum levels that result. Wistar rats were assigned to groups fed with either a standard control diet (C), a diet high in fat (FD), a diet high in fat with L-arginine, or a diet high in fat with L-arginine and vitamin C. After 6 weeks, the length and weight of the rats were measured, and the animals were euthanized. The liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, heart, and gonads were collected, as were blood samples. The total serum cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting glucose, insulin, TAS, and TNF alpha levels were measured. The tissue calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper concentrations were determined. It was found that L-arginine supplementation diminished the effect of the modified diet on the concentration of iron in the liver and spleen and of copper in heart. At the same time, it was observed that L-arginine supplementation reduced the effect of the high-fat diet on insulin, TNF alpha, and TAS. The combination of L-arginine and vitamin C produced a similar effect on the mineral levels in the tissues as did L-arginine used alone. Moreover, positive correlations between serum insulin and iron in the liver, between TNF alpha and iron in the liver, and between TNF alpha and copper in the heart were observed. The level of TAS in serum was inversely correlated with the copper level in the heart and the iron level in the liver. We concluded that the beneficial influence of L-arginine on insulin, TAS, and TNF alpha serum level is associated with changes in the iron and copper status in rats fed with a high-fat diet. No synergistic effect of L-arginine and vitamin C in the biochemical parameters or in the mineral status in rats fed with the modified diet was observed.
