What do we know 40 years after Nixon declared the 'war on cancer'? On the origin, prevention and treatment of cancer

Art in an age of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) will affect almost every aspect of our lives and replace many of our jobs. On one view, machines are well suited to take over automated tasks and humans would remain important to creative endeavors. In this essay, I examine this view critically and consider the possibility that AI will play a significant role in a quintessential creative activity, the appreciation and production of visual art. This possibility is likely even though attributes typically important to viewers-the agency of the artist, the uniqueness of the art and its purpose might not be relevant to AI art. Additionally, despite the fact that art at its most powerful communicates abstract ideas and nuanced emotions, I argue that AI need not understand ideas or experience emotions to produce meaningful and evocative art. AI is and will increasingly be a powerful tool for artists. The continuing development of aesthetically sensitive machines will challenge our notions of beauty, creativity, and the nature of art.

Evolution of Artistic and Athletic Propensities: Testing of Intersexual Selection and Intrasexual Competition

Since Darwin proposed that human musicality evolved through sexual selection, empirical evidence has supported intersexual selection as one of the adaptive functions of artistic propensities. However, intrasexual competition has been overlooked. We tested their relative importance by investigating the relationship between the self-perceived talent/expertise in 16 artistic and 2 sports modalities and proxies of intersexual selection (i.e., mate value, mating and parenting efforts, sociosexuality, and number of sexual partners) and intrasexual competition (i.e., aggressiveness, intrasexual competitiveness) in heterosexuals. Participants were 82 Brazilian men, 166 Brazilian women, 146 Czech men, and 458 Czech women (Mage = 26.48, SD = 7.12). Factor analysis revealed five factors: Literary-arts (creative writing, humor, acting/theater/film, poetry, storytelling), Visual-arts (painting/drawing, sculpting, handcrafting, culinary arts, architecture design), Musical-arts (playing/instruments, singing, dance, whistling), Circus-arts (juggling, acrobatics), and Sports (individual, collective). Multivariate General Linear Model (GLM) showed more associations of the arts to intersexual selection in women and to intrasexual selection in men, and overall more relationships in women than in men. In women, literary and musical-arts were related to elevated inter- and intrasexual selections proxies, visual and circus-arts were related to elevated intersexual selection proxies, and sports were related to intrasexual selection proxies. In men, literary-arts and sports were related to elevated inter- and intrasexual selection proxies, musical-arts were related to intrasexual proxies, and circus-arts were related to intersexual proxies; visual-arts did not have predictors. Although present in both sexes, each sexual selection component has different relative importance in each sex. Artisticality functions to attract and maintain long/short-term partners, and to compete with mating rivals.

Decision Support for a Woman Considering Continuing Extended Endocrine Therapy for Breast Cancer: A Case Study

This case study evaluated decision coaching with a breast cancer survivor considering continuing extended endocrine therapy from eight years to 10 years. The survivor, aged 58 years and who completed surgery and chemotherapy eight years ago, was concerned about side effects of endocrine therapy. Decision coaching based on the Ottawa Decision Support Framework involved an oncology nurse using the Ottawa Personal Decision Guide. Compared to baseline (2 out of 4), decisional comfort improved (3 out of 4) post decision coaching. The survivor felt more certain, but wanted further advice from her oncologist. She was leaning toward discontinuing endocrine therapy given she valued quality of life over a small risk of recurrence. Audio-recording analysis using the Decision Support Analysis Tool revealed high decision coaching quality (10/10). Breast cancer survivors facing preference-sensitive decisions about extended endocrine therapy could be supported with decision coaching by oncology nurses to ensure informed values-based decisions.
