Enhanced dielectric properties of polyimide/BaTiO3 nanocomposite by embedding the polypyrrole@polyimide core-shell nanoparticles

Fabrication and mechanical, electrical properties study of polyimide films curing at low-temperature condition assisted by microwave

Polyimide (PI) films with excellent mechanical and electrical properties were produced at a low temperature assisted by microwave. Depending on the reciprocating movement of dipole molecules excited by microwave, even though under a low temperature, the rotation and conformational changes of functional groups could also be promoted. Thus, reaction between N-H bond and -OH in carboxyl which could realize dehydration and cyclization of polyamic acid proceeded normally. Results revealed that the combination between ambient temperature only at 70°C and microwave power at 2000 W or higher could also produce PI films with imidization degree of 100%. For PI-2000W, compared with traditional PI film (PI-300°C) that generated only at temperature of 300°C, even though on the basis of no any change in molecular structure and addition of filler, the tensile strength, elastic modulus, crystallinity, and apparent density increased by about 21%, 51%, 37%, and 5%, respectively. For electrical properties, conductivity enhanced by one to two orders of magnitude comparing with PI-300°C. Results indicated that while keeping the original molecular structure of PI films unchanged, this work provided a new and effective method to assist the enhancement in mechanical and electrical properties of PI films.

Scalable dextran-polypyrrole nano-assemblies with photothermal/photoacoustic dual capabilities and enhanced biocompatibility

Polypyrroles have shown great potential in photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy owing to its excellent photothermal conversion capabilities. However, the synthesis of polypyrrole-based nano-assemblies which have colloidal stability in biological buffers requires a number of steps, including the polymerization of pyrrole monomers, self-assembly of polypyrrole-based copolymers, and even an additional step to increase the biocompatibility of the nano-assemblies. Herein, a "polymerization/assembly" two-in-one synthesis is proposed for the first time to achieve the one-step synthesis of a new family of polypyrrole-based nano-assemblies, dextran-polypyrrole nano-assemblies (Dex-PPy NAs), under ambient conditions and in aqueous media. In addition, the approach employs tetravalent cerium ions as initiators which can initiate the polymerization of pyrrole monomers through the initiation of free radicals from dextran molecular chains. The resultant Dex-PPy NAs have a photothermal conversion efficiency reaching as high as 41 % and an excellent photostability. More importantly, the NAs with controllable nanoscale dimensions display no signs of cytotoxicity in both in vitro and in vivo studies owing to their biocompatible dextran "shell". An in vivo study further confirmed that the Dex-PPy NAs have excellent real-time photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy capabilities for malignant tumors. Therefore, this study represents an important step towards the scalable synthesis of polypyrrole-based nano-assemblies with photothermal/photoacoustic dual capabilities and enhanced biocompatibility.

Production of polyimide ceria nanocomposites by development of molecular hook technology in nano-sonochemistry

Poly(amic acid), the precursor of polyimide (PI), was used for the preparation of PI/CeO₂ nanocomposites (NC)s by ultrasonic assisted technique via insertion of the surface modified CeO₂ nanoparticles (NP)s into PI matrix. In the preparation stages, in the first, the modifications of CeO₂ NPs by using hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) as a binder were targeted using ultrasonic waves. In the second step, newly designed PI structure was formed from the sonochemical imidization process as a molecular hook. In this step two different reactions were occurred. The acetic acid elimination reaction in the main chain of macromolecule, and the acetylation reaction in the side chains of poly(amic acid) were accomplished. By acetylation process the hook structure was created for trapping of the modified nanoparticles. In the final step the preparation of PI NCs were achieved by sonochemical process. The structural and thermal properties of pure PI and PI/CeO₂ NCs were studied by several techniques such as fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal analyses. FT-IR and ¹H NMR spectra confirmed the success in preparation of PI matrix. The FE-SEM, TEM, and AFM analyses showed the uniform distribution of CeO₂ NPs in PI matrix. The XRD patterns of NCs show the presence of crystalline CeO₂ NPs in amorphous PI matrix. The thermal analysis results reveal that, with increases in the content of CeO₂ NPs in PI matrix, the thermally stability factors of samples were improved.
